After years of surfing, outdoor adventure and generally messing about on and in the water, we decided to create a better solution to the common problem of:
Existing products on the market had major draw backs including durability, issues with invalidating car insurance and many are just not waterproof! As we started getting better cars and hiring other people's cars whilst travelling, our solution of hiding the key in various locations around the beach and car was no longer an option. So Keebunga, was formed, a collaboration of surfers, outdoor enthusiasts, engineers and designers. Our goal was to create a product that was designed specifically to solve the problem of vehicle key security for the outdoor enthusiast. The result is complete peace of mind, so that you can enjoy your activity without the worry of whether your ride home is going to leave without you!
After extensive development, testing and research we are now ready to put the key case into production. Getting to this point has been no walk in the park but over the past few years we have teamed up with some extraordinarily talented people to get this project off the ground and ready for production.
We now need the last chunk of cash in order to complete production set up and pay for our 1st volume production run.
Keebunga believe that conducting transparent business is the right thing to do and is one of the most powerful ways to promote more sustainable business practices.
Risks and challenges
Bringing any hardware product from concept all the way through to successful volume production is challenging. Since 2009 we have been working on a number of products, including the development of the Keebunga Waterproof Key Case and have learnt a huge amount.
The biggest lesson we have learnt is to leave nothing to chance. If it might go wrong, it probably will. There are no short cuts!
Our intention is to use Kickstarter to help overcome the prohibitive costs of setting up production, which requires the construction of both plastic injection and metal injection mold tools.
We could have come to Kickstarter earlier in the development process but we wanted to make sure that we had completed as many steps as possible so that we had the very best chance of succeeding.
Now, with all product development, testing and prototyping complete we have gone the extra mile. Our manufacturing partner has been working hard for us, undergoing several rounds of design for manufacture (a process where the product design is optimised to reduce manufacturing difficulty) and we have successfully begun the construction of our tooling suite.
All of these steps will lower the risks and potential delay as we transition into volume production. We are also fortunate to be working with some of the worlds best production engineers at Indo-MiM in Bangalore who make components for the likes of Leatherman, Victorinox and Bentley.
As soon as we reach our funding target we will give the go ahead to our manufacturing partner to complete the remaining tools and are scheduled to be in production in 12 weeks from that point.
We are going to keep you up to date with every step of the process and bring you along for the final and most exciting part of our journey: delivering the world's 1st hard shell waterproof key case to outdoor enthusiasts world wide.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
