After traveling to some great places in the world and witnessing the fragility of ecosystems first-hand, I'm finding ways to share my experiences with the rest of the world, aka: YOU!
The book will group the images I shot when traveling to so many beautiful places on this planet, discovering so many beautiful creatures. This book will focus on the animals and some landscapes. The stories I picked up through traveling give an extra dimension to it.
And, as my next expedition will bring me to the Antarctic region in February 2016, I plan to take more images there. Combined with the images I made earlier in Alaska, Canada, Peru, and New Zealand, they will create the first set of images, showing the reader "The Fragility of Ecosystems".
This Kickstarter project is to get the book printed, edited and launched, and hopefully to step up some of the images (like adding some aerial shots) I'll make in the Antarctic region, if we make the stretch goals.
Supporting the book also shows your support for my future endeavors in the "Fragility of Ecosystems" project. Upcoming expeditions include documenting the search for water in Burkina Faso, for example. A published photographer will have more chances to get sponsors and funding. I’ll be able to get more expositions, in addition to the ones planned already in New York, Brazil and Ukraine in 2016. Join my newsletter to know where and when.
Thank you & hugs
You know you are awesome. But by sponsoring this campaign, we both make sure that the whole world is aware as well. All donations over $5 will entitle you to your name on the thank-you-page of my blog.
Ever got a postcard from Antarctica?
I will create some postcards from the images. For $20, I’ll send you one of my images as a postcard from here in NYC. If you can spare $25, I’ll send it to you from the only postal station on Antarctica: the Vernadsky Research Base. For $35, I’ll make and print a picture while traveling there, and send it from the same base.
Size: 9" x 7" (that's 22.8cm x 17.8cm) in landscape format on 60-lb paper, with soft cover/paperback. If we get to the stretch goal of $6000, I'll be able to create the book in 11" x 8.5" (27.9cm x 21.6cm) and upgrade the paper quality.
Initially, the book will have 50 pages. If we reach the stretch goal of $6000, I can add 10 pages, and we'll have a larger, thicker book. If we reach $9000, your book will have 70 pages.
The images will be combined with stories of where and how they were made. The look and feel is still pretty much a work in progress, and some of the images that will be part of the book still have to be made in February on Antarctica.
A critique session or interview
I'll make myself available for a 30-minute video chat with you and your friends. We can discuss your and my photo work, views and motivations. If you like, we can make this an interview you can publish on your blog or use in your podcast (and I'll be happy to mention it on my blog). I count on having the chat after I'm back, but we can be flexible if you like to publish before I leave for Antarctica.
- For $200: I will send 5 postcards from the Vernadsky base, each to a different address anywhere in the world, and you'll get the book. If you choose to allow me, I'll be happy to include your name in the book and on the webpage.
- For $250: I will send 2 postcards from the Vernadsky base, each to a different address anywhere in the world. You will get a print of "Curious Seal" ( 2-9/10 ex. in Aluminum 8"x12"). Of course I'll send you the book. If you choose to allow me, I'll be happy to include your name in the book and on the webpage.
Unique prints on metal
I selected two of my images that will be printed on aluminum. If you pledge $500 for the campaign, you'll get one of these. The two images are "Whale Tail Solitude" and "Mommy Bear".

Want to give it as a gift?
The perks here are cool and very original gifts! As the book or the prints will reach you later, I'll provide you with a certificate so you're not empty handed at the party. Just drop me a note when the project is funded.
With $3500, I'll be able to publish the book. If your generous nature allows me to get further, I'll be able to take some extra equipment to Antarctica - and you'll benefit: At $6000, we can print the book in 11" x 8.5" (27.9cm x 21.6cm) and upgrade the paper quality. You'll have aerial shots from Antarctica in there as well. At $9000, the book will have at least 70 pages and will include Patagonia and/or Falklands images. If you lift me over that, we'll figure out how we can make you benefit from your generosity!
Thank you for checking out my project, thanks for donating, and thanks for supporting my dream to bring the "Fragility of Ecosystems" to life!
Copyright: All pictures I've uploaded here are my work, except for the cover image of the penguin and the camera by Martha de Jong-Lantink, used with permission and gratitude because I haven't been on Antarctica yet!
Risks and challenges
Travel to Antarctica is inherently risky, especially on a sailboat. Printing images while traveling might prove tricky, given the cold.
There is only one post office in Antarctica, and with the experienced skipper, we should be able to get there and send you the cards. If for whatever reason, we don't make it that far, I'll send you the cards from Ushuaia (the southernmost tip of South America, known as the “End of the World") instead from at the research base.
The book printing is a pretty straightforward process, so I don't expect issues there. I'll be making several copies of the images on portable hard drives while out on the ocean, and as soon as I'm back in Ushuaia, all images will be backed up remote.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
