About this project
Over the Rainbow: The Art of Karen Krajenbrink
I have been selling my work at conventions for the last few years, but I would like to bump up my quality level from my past sketchbooks and sell a larger book of rough and finished works. My old books were 32-36 pages, saddle stitch, ashcan size (5.5x8.5 inches), limited to 100 books, sold at conventions and through Stuart Ng Books. I would like to print a 60 page book at 8.25x10.5, limited to 250 copies. Since my smaller book went for $10, I'd like to keep my price for the new book to $20.
As to the name, I always title my sketchbooks after song titles. Past names have been Mass Romantic and Neon Tiger. Over the Rainbow is in memory of my mom, who passed away May 2013.
Who am I? I'm a game artist working in the Bay Area. When not busy at work, I'm drawing and gardening at home. I enjoy drawing pinups, animals, and weird creatures. I've worked in TV, film, and comics in the past and was trained as a traditional 2D animator at Laguna College of Art and Design.
Why should you back me? I've done these sketchbooks in the past, and have 90% of the work for the sketchbook ready. I simply have to format my pages (a weekend of work) and send it off to my printer.
Normally, I have the funds to print these sketchbooks on my own, however, due to family tragedy, I have drained my savings account.
How are the funds being used? $1100 total will cover the cost of having 250 books printed and cover supplies for mailing. Any extra funds will go towards stretch goals, like adding pages, upgrading pages a premium paperstock, or upgrading the cover.
When will the sketchbook be done? I'd like to debut this book at CTN Expo 2013 in Burbank this year. It's a tight deadline, but thankfully, my printer has an exceptionally fast turnaround, and I know I can do it.

Risks and challenges
If funded, my base challenge will be keeping myself organized with reward tiers and time management while working full time. I've already setup spreadsheets for keeping track of backers and reward tiers, and setup a schedule for mailing sketchbooks.
The artwork for the book is 95% done, with the last pieces being touched up and made page ready in the coming weeks. Several pieces in the book will debut as prints at APE in San Francisco this year.
There is one edge case that if we reach our stretch goal of $2000 and surpass it, that potentially people would not be able to receive a reward. I will mitigate this problem should it crop up by extending the edition to whatever number will cover Kickstarter backers to the nearest 25. So if 250 people buy the sketchbook, I will will run the edition to 275 to allow a few extras. If 300 folks purchase the book, I will round up to 325. Regardless, the book will NEVER be an open edition, and the books will be printed with a specific number on the first page to insure the edition.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The problem with hardcover is that this sketchbook was meant to debut at CTN Expo in Burbank. Which means that we would need enough lead time for hardcover (usually a several month process). I did, however, look into local printers instead of overseas, and unfortunately it's fairly cost prohibitive.
Should everything go smoothly with this sketchbook, I'm sure I'll come back to Kickstarter with a Hardcover in 2014 :)
The long and short of it is this: It's a limited edition book, and giving a PDF (which I cannot sign and number) to everyone is a great gesture, but I feel takes away from the integrity of being limited. It's why after much thought, I never offered my older sketchbooks as PDF rewards. I figure that the price of the book to you at $20 is a fair price for a large sketchbook. I will provide updates to backers with images going into the book however, prior to it heading out to the printers. Thanks for your understanding :)
