About this project
This short film is an inspirational narrative that illustrates the miraculous day-to-day fight that a quadriplegic faces during recovery. I met 26-year-old Joe Stone, through a mutual friend and when I did, I instantly fell in love with his story. After two hours talking with him, I left feeling so inspired and eager to learn more from him. Last August, Joe was involved in a speed flying accident that was truly life altering. This accident caused him to permanently lose mobility in his legs. He was diagnosed as an incomplete c-7 quadriplegic; a spinal cord injury that causes paralysis from the chest down.
Throughout his recovery, Joe has displayed the workings of a true fighter. As an extremely active man with a passion for the outdoors, he has had no regrets for the hobby that took away his ability to walk. Joe demonstrates a strong determination to keep his body active. With eight months in several hospitals, Joe responded very well to physical therapy and worked VERY hard to gain back his independence.
He is currently training to hand cycle 105 miles through Glacier National Park, which he hopes to accomplish before the 1-year anniversary of his accident. Along the way, he hopes to meet the people responsible for saving his life. He wants to show how much he has been able to accomplish within that first year following his accident. Joe's attitude towards an otherwise debilitating and traumatic accident has been unique. Joe does not feel the need to dwell on the past, but rather wants to find out how he can benefit from the new life he has been given.
This is a remarkable story and I want to share it with you! It is people like Joe that not only help others appreciate the life they have been given, but motivate them to enrich their lives, no matter their situation.
I will be telling his story by writing a script and casting an actor to follow his journey through recovery. The film will showcase Joe's understanding of paralysis and working through the recovery process. This includes, physical therapy, finding new ways to enjoy his life, and regaining independence. Joe's love for the outdoors kept him motivated throughout the recovery process. By constructing a narrative through conversations with Joe, his whole experience will give a true representation of a man overcoming adversity.
I look forward to bringing you this inspirational story. Thank you in advance for your support.
I want this film to help make a difference in the lives of those with paralysis, their family members and their caretakers. Whether you are directly affected by it or not, Joe’s story is an incredibly uplifting story where you can seek inspiration.
How I plan to use these funds:
1. To film Joe in Montana this August by documenting his 105 mile hand cycle tour through Glacier National Park
2. To film Joe in Montana this August as he meets members of the Life Flight team that saved his life. All of them he will be meeting for the first time.
3. To film landscape and speed flying trials in Missoula, Montana.
4. To interview medical professionals from all five hospitals/care centers that worked with Joe throughout his recovery.
5. To interview Joe and his family about his inspirational and courageous recovery.
Whether it’s a feature film or a short, filmmaking requires a lot of funding. I will need a lot of film equipment/props, food for my cast/crew, transportation to, from and around Montana and possible distribution costs. All funding raised will go directly towards the production of this short film. $1,500 is just a fraction of my budget, but because I am a student filmmaker this will help me out significantly.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T RAISE MY GOAL:
It is all or nothing. If I do not make my goal… if I am even one dollar short by the end of my deadline, everything will be refunded and no rewards can be given! Please help me prevent this from happening.
This project would not be able to happen without the contributions from all of my friends, family and community. To show my appreciation for all of your support, I have created some great gifts to give you in return.

HOW KICKSTARTER WORKS
Kickstarter allows creative individuals the ability to seek help and support needed to make their projects happen. For example, it allows student filmmakers like myself to share our project with our friends, family and the Internet community. I created a profile with project details, set a fundraising goal, a time frame in which I want to meet my goal and then will offer you, the sponsors, rewards for supporting me!
However, if I do not make my fundraising goal by the set time frame, Kickstarter will refund all of the donations.
All pledges are securely processed through Amazon’s payment services. Your pledge will not be processed until the end of the funding period IF I meet my goal.
If my project is successfully funded, your card will be charged when the project reaches its funding deadline. If the project does not reach its funding goal, your card will not be charged.
CAN I RAISE MORE THAN MY GOAL?
Definitely! $1,500 is only a portion of my budget and Kickstarter will allow me to raise as much money as I can before the set deadline.
WHEN YOU CAN EXPECT TO SEE THE FILM
I’m already in the process of producing the film! I have one quarter (11 weeks) for each stage of production. The film will be finished by March or April 2012 with a screening to follow!
WHAT ELSE YOU CAN DO TO HELP
After donating, I would really appreciate you spreading the word to your friends and family! Please share my Kickstarter project on your Facebook profile, Twitter feed and most importantly, word of mouth! I ask that you help share Joe’s incredible story that when completed as a short film could inspire and bring hope to others!
