My name is Katie Skelly and I'm a comic book artist and illustrator in Brooklyn, New York. You may know my work from comics titles like My Pretty Vampire, Operation Margarine, Nurse Nurse, Twisted Romance #1, and lots more.
Bad girls have always been my narrative focus: witches, bikers, outcasts, vampires, party girls, femme fatales, and weirdos. My cartooning style synthesizes my inspirations of b-movies, psychedelia, horror, and European erotica.
My fascination with tarot began last year when a good friend gave me an hour-long reading that helped me rethink and overcome a negative experience. Out of gratitude I illustrated a set of customized tarot cards as favors for her wedding, and I've been obsessed with creating my own full deck inspired by the empowering experience of tarot ever since. And now I'm asking for your help to make my deck a reality.
I am producing a full color, 78-card deck with tuck box, including both Major and Minor Arcana, inked by hand and digitally colored. My illustrations are informed by the classic Rider-Waite deck, but styled with an eye towards psychedelia and sexuality.
In addition to doing my own tarot research, I enlisted the consultation of professional reader The Real Housewitch to ensure I was staying true to the specific symbolism of each card. My aim is to make my cards readable for both novice and experienced tarot users alike.
I've also chosen to print the cards at 3.5 x 5.75" (rather than the standard 2.75 x 4.75") in order to give readers plenty of space to review and interpret.
My goal is to have the deck produced by August 2018. I am currently halfway through drawing and coloring the 78 cards, and will complete the second half throughout the duration of the Kickstarter. I will post new cards as I create them for my supporters.
I am raising enough to cover the cost of printing the decks and the projected cost of shipping them out to buyers. Because the size of the deck is a bit larger than usual, the cost has shot just ahead of my reach and I'm counting on your pre-orders to make the project happen.
I am keeping my rewards simple and realistic in order to keep the full cost of production down and turnaround time quick. However if we should go over my goal amount, I have the following in mind:
REACHED! $7,500: Create a BAD GIRL TAROT sew-on patch to include in every deck order:
REACHED! $8,000: Up the card print finish to super smooth.
REACHED! $8,500: Include gold foil on the tuckbox covers.
REACHED! $9,000: Create a newsprint foldout of my illustrated zodiac to include in every deck order. Check out the illustrations here!
Thank you for considering my project! I'm so excited to bring Bad Girl Tarot to the world. Follow me on Instagram for more looks behind the scenes!
Risks and challenges
While this is my first time undertaking producing a deck, I've successfully produced my own comics and other projects for over a decade. By keeping my rewards realistic, I will be able to focus on getting out the best deck possible in a reasonable turnaround.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
