UPDATE: Our Love and Loss concerts are ON! As of 5:45 p.m. today (Oct. 7), we're at exactly $5,000, so we're over goal. Thank you to everyone who pledged; we are so excited to share this project with you.
This doesn't mean you can't still join us. We'll keep accepting pledges until our project ends Sunday night. Stay tuned for an update on our "stretch goal" i.e. what we're going to do with the money we raise beyond our original budget.
Voices of a New Renaissance is an exciting new chamber choir, founded with the mission of bringing engaging performances of the highest quality to audiences across North Carolina's Triangle region. VOANR is run by an experienced team -- conductor Nathan Leaf and singer/administrator Kathryn Mueller -- and the ensemble’s members are some of the best singers in the area. While the group's focus is on the music of the Renaissance, our programs explore the full range of choral music, from Gregorian chant to new compositions. VOANR plans to experiment with nontraditional concert venues, shorter program lengths, and an approachable, interactive style of presentation.
We fill an important niche in the Triangle's music scene, but we need your help to build our audience and cement our place in the community.
Our Kickstarter project will fund our next concerts, planned for January 31 and February 1, 2014 and titled Love and Loss. Our goal is to present these concerts to the largest audiences possible and create a loyal following among the concert-going public so that we can build a local donor base, cultivate a board of directors, and apply for nonprofit status in advance of the 2014-2015 season we hope to have.
As you may know, ticket prices, especially for a new ensemble building its audience, cover only a fraction of the costs of producing high-quality performances. Kickstarter funding for our Love and Loss concerts will allow us to do extensive publicity and get the word out to new audience members. Funding will also pay our musicians a reasonable fee so we can focus on the music and give our audiences an incredible musical experience, one that will secure a place for Voices of a New Renaissance in the Triangle.
Here's the concert description for Love and Loss:
Love and Loss: Human Emotion put to voice
Joy and sorrow drive humanity to its extremes, from the ecstasy of romantic love to the despair of loss and abandonment. We give voice to the outpouring of these emotions in the music of great Renaissance composers. The program includes the beloved If Ye Love Me by Tallis, the heart wrenching outpouring of When David Heard by Weelkes, and Monteverdi's multi-movement masterpiece, Sestina (Tears of the lover at the tomb of the beloved).

Risks and challenges
Without Kickstarter funding, we won't be able to give our Love and Loss concerts, and there will be more loss than love in January. With full funding, however, the risks to completing our project are extremely small. We have selected most of the repertoire, and our musicians and two church venues are holding the dates for us. All we need is your support to make it happen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
