About this project
Jan. 22 - We did it!!!!! Hoof stomps, old goat swings his cane, chickens take flight, the donkey brays and poems spill out from Paco... Thank you so much to everyone who BELIEVED. Now the real fun begins. I will keep you updated every month or so on the project - it will take time, but this will evolve into a book or more. I will also be working on getting your rewards to you in spring [or whatever your reward indicated]. I am just so relieved, pleased and proud. Apifera knew it would happen, but Apifera knows more than I do.
You can still pledge. If I were to go over the goal of $8750 I would put it to good use - see Q&A below.
"Misfits of Love" is a book idea I have been working on in one way or another since I first moved to our Apifera Farm back in 2004. Here is a slideshow of how the book will look and 'feel". My farm is a final home to many of the misfits - the old ones and the crippled ones, creatures that were neglected, abused or left as useless. Their hearts live here with me and their stories are worthy of print.
Funds will be used [see specifics below] to get this quiet little book ready for publication. NOTE: Awards are sent if and only if the project is 100% funded If it does not fund, you pay none of your pledge.
Ever since I can remember, I have had empathy for the elderly creatures, or the 'discarded", and that includes humans. Upon moving to the farm, my barnyard seemed to be a natural settling ground for wandering abandoned roosters, old donkeys, misplaced ducks and a variety of old and challenged goats. Oh, and a pig that came with a goat. And old mice in love. Many of the creatures were adopted from bad situations, rescued by another and then sent to Apifera- but some dropped out of the sky, so to speak.
We live in such a throw away society where old is not valued by the masses - but I see the beauty and soul in 'old' every day here....be it in the eyes of an old, misused donkey or the curve in the crippled legs of a handicapped goat.
When my father was dying in hospice, many states away, I was unable to go to him. Taking care of my old creatures took on an even more symbolic meaning for me. As I rubbed oil on the pig's very dry skin each day, I was reminded of my father's 85 year old legs and how dry and sore they were for him. I couldn't help him, but I could soothe this pig with my hands and she in turn soothed me with her charm and pig beauty.
This fundraising stage is to get the book 'print-ready', and having done that before, I can tell you it takes time, energy and money. I plan to work with the same editorial consultant who was a former editor at Chronicle Books to get the manuscript in tip-top shape. With 144 pages and $125 hour consulting fee, it is a major expense - but very important. Funds will also help me get the layouts of the book prepped. Each chapter focuses on a different animal with a narrative, emotive sepia photographs and one full color art spread of a painting. Promo copies will be made at about $50 each that will be used to generate interest from publishers or help determine if self publishing is needed. My goal is to have the manuscript ready for first edits by January and first layouts will begin at the same time. I will be doing the layouts, but will need some expertise on proofs/layout print prep from consultants.
- consulting with editor, copy edits, proofing $3000+
- small run of promo copies $500
- layout/design/type/proofs $3500+
- cost of gifts for donors and s/h $2000+
- Payypal and Kickstarter fees will come out of the total too [10% for both]
You can read more about the old animals, and my farm, and all the animal work I do there at my blog.
The world is full of old beauty - help me share it with a larger audience. And thank you in advance if you help.
I've seen some Kickstarter project continue to take in money pledges even if they make their funding goal. What would the money be used for if you go over budget?
The current budget includes an editing/'shaping' budget to help tweak the book, edit everything from narratives to what art goes into it. I estimated as well as I could, but this is a book that includes art and photography and has to be laid out well to retain the essence I envision- and that means good design help. I could spend a million dollars promoting the book to editors, and if the decision is made to go the self publishing route, it would be saved for the that. I would also be able to create more promo copies to pitch to editors too [I currently calculate this at more than $75 each]. I also have an idea of having the narratives recited as a podcast, or video, or..I'm percolating...for promo purposes, but also maybe as a vehicle to tell the stories, and a small tip could be paid by viewers - part to go to Apifera's old animals, part to go to the three animal sanctuaries I support. We are not near to going over the budget, but if we do- anyone who knows me - knows I'm thrifty, hardworking and honest, and it would be used wisely!
Will you be donating any of the fund to your favorite animal charities where you adopt your Misfits from?
No, the money is specificly to get the book ready to publish - and Kickstarter campaigns can't be used to raise charity funds. As you know, I donate a lot of tie, art and energy to help animal sanctuaries I know and respect- specifically New Moon Goat Farm Rescue, Lavender Dreams Donkey Rescue and Sanctuary One. These are places we know, trust and have adopted from. When the book is finally published, I will most certainly be donating from net proceeds.
Possibly! These promo copies are very expensive. But by the time I get them set up to print, I might be able to order more for interested buyers. I really want the book to have a hard cover, and have a specific 'feel', so I can't commit completely to selling any promo copies.
Because this funding is to pay for pre-press, shpaing/editing, consulting on design and to get it to the hands of a publisher - or a self publishing setting. I prefer to find it a publisher but will cross that bridge when i get there. It is very hard to get anything illustrated published, let alone short stories, so I have to make this manuscript as complete and ready as possible, as well as the layout and images. I have worked in this manner on my illustrated memoir o finish the manuscript before it went to editors, and it made all the difference.
