All 10 Stretch Goals Achieved!
Hundreds of amazing backers pledged double our original base goal. Now Kate Wolf’s Live In Mendocino album will be 20 tracks! Kate’s family is very grateful...we couldn’t have done it without your support. Thank you.
After the Campaign is Over, The Album Will Still Be Available
Kate Wolf had a great affinity for the California coast, and she frequently played in Mendocino area venues prior to becoming a nationally known folk singer and songwriter (biography). Since her passing in 1986, Kate’s family has collaborated on a number of projects to keep her music and memory alive. Now we are excited to present a new collection of songs recorded at Mendocino concerts from 1979 to 1982. Please pledge to help bring this album to life on Kate's original Owl Records label!
Live In Mendocino features eight songs that haven’t appeared on a prior Kate Wolf album: three by Kate and five by others. The album also contains a live version of Across The Great Divide, one of Kate’s most beloved songs. The CD booklet includes lyrics for every song and many previously unpublished photographs.
The album will contain at least 10 songs; up to 20 if we meet our stretch goals! (See details below.) Click song titles to hear excerpts.

The songs are from seven concerts recorded at various Mendocino County, California venues by Nicholas Wilson, whose photos of Kate appear in the album. Perhaps you saw Kate at The Well or Crown Hall in the city of Mendocino or at Greenwood Oasis in Elk?
When Nick told Kate’s family that he had recorded many of these shows, we were excited about the prospect of releasing them. Nick's 15 hours of tapes were made directly from the soundboard at each concert, and he painstakingly digitized nearly 200 song performances.
We then turned to Nina Gerber, Kate’s long time accompanist, who has compiled two other posthumous Kate Wolf collections. Her deep and intimate familiarity with Kate’s music, along with a desire for quality that matched Kate’s, resulted in a selection of 20 tracks that we feel beautifully represent Kate. If you’d like to learn more about the process, visit the Kate Wolf website.
Nina Gerber appears on every track (except the a cappella The Lilac & The Apple). In addition to playing mandolin, harmonica, and guitar on various tracks, she also sings harmony vocal. Ford James played bass and sang with Kate and Nina for years, including Kate’s show on Austin City Limits. Rick Byars played with Kate early on in her career: he’s on bass and harmony vocals on this album. These fine musicians were the backbone of Kate’s band during these Mendocino years.
Stretch Goals to Double The Album!
The $10,000 base goal reflects the costs for a 10-song album. Through a series of stretch goals, we have can double the album to 20 tracks. Each of the ten $1,000 stretch goals covers the additional costs for mastering, CD booklet pages, publishing royalties, performer fees, etc. for one song. We hope you’ll help us reach all ten stretch goals so we can release a music-packed 76-minute album!

About the Mendocino “Groovy” Album T-Shirts
Designed by Kate’s granddaughter, Bonnie Kate Wolf, we think the “Live In Mendocino” album t-shirt is really, ahem, “groovy”. The image is 12” in diameter and incorporates the original LP label artwork from Owl Records, which Kate started in 1976. Our screening process dyes the fabric rather than placing a layer of plastic ink on top of the shirt fabric, for a much softer feel. The black, 100% cotton shirts are soft too, and will come in women’s and men’s sizes S, M, L, XL and 2X.
This design is now also available in a 3" vinyl sticker!
About Digital Downloads
Instead of a physical disc, we'll send a CD-size sticker featuring the album cover. A unique code on the removable backing can be used one time to download the album (in MP3 or FLAC format). If you like, you can order extra digital album stickers (see Add-Ons below) and give a download code to a friend.
After the campaign closes, we'll send a survey requesting your shipping address, shirt sizes, and anything else applicable.
Want an extra album, video, songbook, t-shirt or sticker for yourself or a friend? You can add these items by increasing your pledge by the amount(s) shown above. If you have already pledged and want to add items, simply select Manage your pledge and increase your pledge amount by the total of the items you wish to add.
