CLASSIC ALICE is the story of a girl who gets a bad grade on a test and starts to live her life according to classic novels. It’s sort of a retelling of these heavy hitting classics in a modern setting, sort of a video-documentary-diary, and all awesome. Watch the first episode & Subscribe!
SUPER SPECIAL UPDATE: Announced on Apr 10th, Classic Alice's next book will be GEORGE BERNARD SHAW'S PYGMALION.
Short Kickstarter Pitch!
My best friend told me this was so long and she didn't want to read it all, so here's an abridged version! If you want lots and lots of details, read the rest of the campaign!
We made six episodes of Classic Alice, a trans-media experience over many online platforms, but we need you to help us make more! With about $8,000 we can make ~10 all-new episodes. With your help, we'd like to release even more seasons of Classic Alice. Your donations will help us pay everyone & fund new content. We expect to have that up by midsummer (July, latest) and some 'teaser' content to fill the gap between now and then. We have a complete breakdown of costs below.
Our team is full of fun, experienced people chomping at the bit & ready to go -- Kate Hackett, creator & star -- is even talking about the next book..!
If we make our goal, you will see new episodes with familiar faces, you will get bi-weekly updates from us so you know where things are, and we'll be excited to include you in our process. Help celebrate smart chicks & make a fun series that everyone can get behind!
We are fully committed to getting an amazing product out. We already have! And given the chance, we can keep telling a story about two friends with some help from you. And maybe, just maybe, we'll write in a few of Kate's damn cats.
NEW: If we reach $9,000, all backers will receive exclusive, early images from the set of Book 2.
Extra Special Goodness & Reach Goals
You guys have been so wonderful, we're excited to announce our first section of "extra stuff". These incentives can only be unlocked as we hit our financial milestones... and the sooner we get to them, the quicker you get your super special extra content. Out of world content, as always, is housed on Kate's channel. In world is on the regular show channel.
$500 - Kate will write you a poem & read it to you. GOAL UNLOCKED.
$1000 - Exclusive "Alice's interpretation" Crime & Punishment Desktop/Facebook/Twitter banner released for ALL! (not the Kickstarter perk, a totally different one!). GOAL UNLOCKED.
$2000 - Video field trip with Kate to a local used bookstore where she hints at the possible next books... GOAL UNLOCKED! NEXT BOOK REVEALED: PYGMALION
$3000 - Alice & Cara release a buddy-friend-roomate video! GOAL UNLOCKED!!
$4000 - HALFWAY! Cast & crew Q&A video. We'll answer some of your questions, so start asking on the Valeton message boards or via any of the following methods here. GOAL UNLOCKED. Q&A will be available on LBDSeahorses
$5000 - Interview with Andrew -- Andrew lets Alice play documentarian! GOAL UNLOCKED.
$6000 - The Video Andrew Never Wanted You to See. GOAL UNLOCKED.
$7000 - Kate will attempt to recreate an episode WITH HER CATS. I can't possibly communicate how stupid that will be. CLASSIC MEOWICE. UNLOCKED.
And, when we reach our $8000 goal, we'll release never before seen bloopers. Mostly of Kate not knowing her lines. That she wrote.
9,000 - Excerpt from Alice's Diary. We'll share a diary entry from Alice in between the fourth & fifth episodes. It will trace her decision to turn herself in & what she expects.
10,000 - VIDCON. We'd love to be able to go, but a booth is a little pricey. If we hit 10k, we can definitely get ourselves down there.
12,000 + - Extra content. We can produce more books & get you better quality as we get higher up the financial food chain. AND we can hire familiar YouTube-y faces.
Watch Our Pitch
Our world takes place in the dorms of Valeton University (top aces!), home of the terrifying… ocelots? Alice Rackham, protagonist extraordinaire, is a ‘good girl’. She’s a good student and very driven and when she gets a low score on an essay because she “doesn’t connect” to material, she kind of spazzes out.
Entre Andrew! Andrew Prichard, pal of Alice and general charm-magnet, is a film student. You guessed it. He starts filming Alice during her journey as one of his final projects for the film program. He got the idea in the weeks leading up to her poor mark and found a way to convince her that this was a great plan.
We also have Cara Graves, Alice’s STEM roommate who is a double(!) major in both mathematics and music theory. To round out our world, Josh - Alice’s weirdo R.A. makes a quick appearance as well. You can visit our characters on our site & start following them around the web. You never know what plot content you might uncover…
In addition to the videos of our series, we have embraced a transmedia storytelling arc and will also showcase the characters (and the show) via Twitter, Facebook, tumblr, YouTube, last.fm, Goodreads, and more! (Check out the character page for direct links). We also have some Top Secret extra content plans in the works, but we can only release them if we can make more seasons. And AND!? You, the audience, are invited to get involved. Create bookclubs, discussion groups, roleplaying games… we want to be a part of your story too!
LUCKY YOU! We have already shot, edited, and produced the first ‘book’ (AKA, the first six episodes). We released the first episode on March 4th 2014, that’s a Tuesday, at 9am, on our YouTube Channel - ClassicAliceSeries!
You can also see our Behind the Scenes interviews with the cast and our director.
New content will be released in the summer of 2014 -- but hopefully we move faster than that!
Kate Hackett - @hackettkate Alice, Creator/Actor/Writer/Exec Producer
Kate is an actress, writer, coach, and private tutor (pshew!). Her mom says she is also “very funny, Katy”. She wrote Classic Alice as a vehicle for herself to showcase her ‘smart and nerdy side’ as well as provide a female-positive series that not only shows women in a positive light, but also shows them making interesting choices. You can read a little more about her adventures in writing CLASSIC ALICE here.
Kate Hackett is an up and coming actress in Los Angeles, California, known for a quick wit and an ability to dig deep emotionally. She has been acting since she was four years old, all the way back in Maryland. She grew up doing musicals (she sings!) and other straight plays, but made the transition to film when she attended Boston University for college. Kate has worked on many independent films and commercials and has produced, starred in, and written her own content. She is fully trained in the Stanislavski, Adler, and Meisner techniques (see resume for schools) and has both studied and performed at UCB, Upright Citizen’s Brigade, in Los Angeles and with Jackson’s Onus, an awesome improv troupe. Kate loves dramatic acting, but is equally versed in comedy. Kate & Joe Just Want to Have Sex, which she wrote and stars in, reached over 230,000 views in six short months AND it is performing in the Hollyweb Film Festival.
Tony Noto - @TheTonyNoto Andrew, Actor
Tony Noto saw Braveheart and decided to do exactly that. And by that, I mean swing swords at Englishmen with his face painted blue. After he was done saving Scotland, he graduated with a Film and Theater degree from the University of Texas and moved to Los Angeles to bring his gentlemanly charm to Hollywood. Tony is often referred to as a young mischievous Matthew McConaughey with the intensity of Michael C. Hall. Currently, Tony studies Human Behavior with Candace Silvers, granddaughter of Phil Silvers, who has worked with and coached Chris Evans, Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, and Josh Radnor. Tony also has studied all four levels at Upright Citizens Brigade and has blended his training to develop the smart ass hero who you love to hate. Or hate to love, you choose. As well as acting Tony is a sword fighter and does fencing and stage combat in Burbank at Tim Weske’s Swordplay LA. You read that last sentence correctly. Website IMDb Facebook
Aaron Matthew Kaiser - @aaronkaiser
Why do we want to make a series promoting reading in young adult audiences? Why do we want to showcase top notch talent? Why do we want to provide role models who go through the questions that we all face? Why do we want to ask about the human condition? Because we love our audience and want them to be intelligent, well rounded people who ask questions. And because we're artists.
Why do we need your help? That's a less saccharine answer!
Movie making is costly. We have a rough total of $6000 for one weekend of shooting, plus Kickstarter rewards + tax/etc.
We are asking for enough to fund just one more book/season. The plan is to jumpstart the series and we'd love to have enough to fund about 24 new episodes to garner even more interest and to get the episodes to fund themselves.
In two days, we can shoot 33 pages. That’s an ungodly number of pages to shoot, so we were really working fast to be on our feet. We were also all working unpaid, in Kate’s house. After shooting was over, her cats threw up in protest. Please don’t make us shoot in Kate’s home ever again. :(
(In pie chart form!!! BECAUSE CHARTS!!!!!)
Our Promise to You
If we make our goal, we promise to provide:
- bi-weekly updates, even if nothing is happening.
- your kickstarter perks
- communication, love, and respect
- new episodes of Alice & Andrew
- answering "Who is Marcus"? (wtf? watch the third ep!)
“Oh my Gosh,” you’re doubtlessly exclaiming. “She had pie charts! I have to give these people my money!”
Calm down, I will accept your coins. Donate here, on Kickstarter! If you cannot use Kickstarter's platform for any reason, please contact us.
"But I'm poor."
I'm sorry! You can STILL HELP. Our first update gave tons of social media campaigns - go bananas.
“Uggghhhh, I don’t knowwwww. If only I had more information or formal pitch material, goddddddd.”
Good grief, FINE FINE FINE. (We have a ton of business on our website, but we also have press packets available here!)
“What if you run into unexpected costs?”
That’s what contingency (and production insurance!) is for, but honestly: we’re pro filmmakers. We’ve been creating on a shoestring budget a lot — we know what things cost (and that’s what the first six episodes showed us! it was kind of a ‘dry run’ to see how we do).
“What if you earn TOO MUCH?”
We’ll spend it all on confetti and glitter!!! (we’ll have reach goals, stay tuned!)
What happens if we don’t meet our goal on Kickstarter?
The six episodes of Classic Alice will sit on the YouTube for all time. Tony will throw a hissy fit over his ‘unrecognized talent’. We just won’t produce any new content for the series if it’s out of pocket, that’s all. You get your episodes that we’ve completed BUT NO MORE!!!!
I don’t want to end on that note though. So let’s end on this — help us keep producing quality content. Help us develop characters that are positive role models for young adults, help us encourage reading in both children and adults. Help us create a community of supportive, loving new friends who look forward to seeing Alice and Andrew dive into life… one book at a time.
ps: hey, thanks http://kickingitforward.org
Risks and challenges
This was covered above, but I'll add a few thoughts here as well. Filmmaking can run into any kind of problem -- but we'll have insurance and contingency money to make sure everything is okay.
We will be distributing via VHX, which lets us upload and sell Classic Alice to buyers as well as provide coupons for digital downloads to our backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
