Thanks to the generous hearts of you family, friends and fans, we have exceeded our fundraising goal with just a few days left to go!
We have nearly reached our secondary goal of $7000 which gives every backer a vote on the music video project. I pick up the cd from manufacture on Friday, February 22nd and begin the celebration concert at 7pm Central in Minneapolis. I will send you a final update from the show!
There is stil time for a final push:If everyone who liked this on facebook gave $1, that would put us over $7000.
If everyone who liked it got the full album download, that would be another $5000 (then you can buy the hard copy when I come to your town).
It's the last opportunity you will have to get the cd before anyone else.
And there is one more $1000 house concert left which I would just love to book with you.
Thanks to my team mates for having faith in this Kickstarter:
Drew Miller musician, magician, master of many cool tools, and the one who suggested we try this. It's his love of this music and the joy he has in playing it that motivates his heart!
Scott Nieman at dubNemo Studios, brilliant producer, musician and composer. This is my third Nordic release with Scott at the helm and he has been key in many beautiful live performances with Drew and I since 2008.
David Stenshoel a spellman and fellow Sognefjordinger. David played with Drew, Scott and I live at the Cedar Cultural Center in 2008 and again in 2009 which yeilded my favorite version of Lita Blå to date.
Aneesa Erinn Adams creates the kind of artwork I would want to do if my stav were a paint brush. She's a Minneapolis artist, teacher and Staver in the House for the new millennium.
More About the Recording:
"Nykken and Bear" by Kari Tauring:
This is a collage of poems, songs, and stories about the Nykken (a water spirit) and the Bear (in all it's forms) that help me tell some of the story of my Norwegian American heritage.
My Grandma's father was a Nykreim. The name Nykriem means Home of the Nykken. Our family came from Herøy in the Ansuz or Mouth of the fjords on Norway's West Coast.
Grandma's mother was born on top of Nedberge mountain at one of the finger ends of the Sognefjord. She was baptized at Gudvangen, and brought to America at the age of three where she grew up and married my great grandfather. I see the hunched back of the bear in Nedgerge mountain.
I wrote the poem Beginnings in Gudvangen, Norway the first time I ever visited (as a contestant on the Norwegian reality show "Alt for Norge") and Seljefløyte - Willow Flute after a workshop with Arna Rennan at Northhouse Folk School - Lake Superior the same year. Bakke church on a television show and a "willow flute" made of PVC pipe played in the autumn. 2008 was strange.
I have finally recorded Villeman og Magnild (a longdans and favorite of Stavers in the House) as an American gallop and Runarvisa (heard as a medieval rune ballad on my Rune App) as a courtly love ballad in English. We have styled our Heiemo og Nykken, a ballad dance, after Kirsten Bråten Berg's aching version but with eerie e-bowed dulcimer and creepy vocal affects. Another song comes from Sweden, a polska, reinterpreted.
The Bear section has a waltz, a longdans, a children's game and a ritual dance.
Bjønndans ein Rituel fra Trysil is the oldest known hunting ritual/song/dance in Norway and the only song I have found in Norwegian folk tradition that uses staff rhythm. I first heard about it from Mads Bøhle at Rudi Gard in 2008 and got the notes and tunes from him in Trondheim in 2011. You can imagine how excited I am to be bringing this ancient tune to the community in America.
This is a very special recording and I hope everyone enjoys it!
Risks and challenges
Here is a new challenge: International postage has doubled since the launch of this project.
Mastering and package design/layout are underway. We went over budget to make the 16 page booklet (a work of art in itself) so we are grateful we exceeded our goal and I am deeply thankful for the volunteerism of Venus Designs and Drew, of course.
It will be an intense few days of mailing out incentives. Organizing, packing, posting...again, Drew is my excellent partner in this and we will work tirelessly to get these incentives to you on time! It has to be finished by March 16 as I will be in Mississippi and Drew and David will be St. Patricizing with Boiled in Lead!
I am already scheduling the house concerts: One in Rapid City, SD and one in St. Paul, MN. I'm pretty sure I can handle a third, should one arise!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
