About this project
Hi folks, my name is Karina Denike. I’m a British born, San Francisco based vocalist, performer, collaborator, and songwriter who is getting close to finishing my first “purely solo” album after years of amazing collaborations!
I’ve had the great fortune of being involved with many bands and singing on amazing records, and soundtracks. I've spent time touring, fronting, recording with, writing for, co-leading, and guesting with bands: Dance Hall Crashers (MCA, 510, Pink and Black); Jezebelle (Discovery Warner); NOFX (Fatwreckords); Ralph Carney’s Serious Jass project (Smog Veil); Hepcat (Hellcat); Me First and The Gimmie Gimmies (Fatwreckords); The Cottontails; No Use for a Name; Tony Sly; Stara Nova; Mr. Lonesome and the Bluebelles; Mixtape (w/ members of Thee Oh Sees and The Dodos); 8 Legged Monster; Hi Standard and many others. It's been pretty EPIC so far.
AND NOW, the time has come to release a record of my OWN material. These are songs I've been writing over the last few years and performing with a great 6 piece band I put together. I’ve been busy in the studio working hard towards.....
A collection of vintage-pop-noir originals inspired by crackly records, early rock and roll, girl groups, motown, doo-wop drama, spaghetti western soundtracks,1930’s torch songs, Czech lullabies, and 80's English new wave and rocksteady. It's gonna sound great on vinyl! Some unusual instruments doing traditional parts, some traditional instruments doing unusual parts and a lot of vocal harmonies. I'm super excited about these songs being out in the world.
I’ve enlisted some INCREDIBLY talented folks to be on it, seriously some of my musical heroes (all of whom are badass composers in their own right!). Aaron Novik (Thorny Brocky) on bass clarinet, Michael McIntosh (Ralph Carney's Serious Jass Project; The Cottontails) on piano/organ, Eric Garland (Donavon; Jazz Mafia) on drums/vibraphone, James Frazier on Fender VI baritone guitar, Lily Taylor, Brigid Dawson (Thee Oh Sees), Deston Berry and Alex Dessert (Hepcat) on vocal harmonies, Daniel Fabricant (Nice Guy Trio; Veronica Klaus) on stand up bass, Ralph Carney (Tom Waits; B-52's; Tin Huey) guesting on Saxophone, Ara Anderson (Ok Go; Sean Hayes; Jolie Holland; Tin Hat) on Trumpet, and I play a vintage chord organ, some Celeste, keyboards and of course…sing, sing, SAAAANG!
I'm completely independent at this time, and don't have the backing of a record label, so my hope is that you will want to hear this album as much as I want to make it...it's sounding amaaaazing!
I've been paying for everything myself so far, however it's VERY expensive. I’ve covered about 75% of the recording process (sometimes working 3 jobs) and we are down to the last crunch so I am now reaching out to the community for support to complete the album.
The minimum we are trying to raise is $15,000 to complete the record and get a publicist. This is cutting some corners but will allow us to do:
- Final Tracking
- Compensate musicians
- Pay for artist/artwork
- Produce onto vinyl, cd, and digital download
- Hire a professional publicist to promote the album
- Cover Kickstarter/Amazon/iTunes admin fees
Kickstarter is all or nothing- if we don’t make $15,000 within our 30-day goal we don’t get any of the donations raised. BUT if we can exceed our goal, we will be able to do the following:
- At $17,000 my 6 piece band and I will be able to tour 5 cities+ on the West Coast
- At $19,000 we will be able to add East Coast dates
- At $25,000 we will be able to create 1 professional music video
- At $50,000 + will allow us to tour Nationally with the possibility to do a Live DVD recording + more music videos
Every dollar raised will go towards the album. If you like what you hear in the video and can make a contribution, I’ll be eternally grateful. ALSO PLEASE help spread the word by joining me on my Facebook page and by becoming a Twitter follower. If you have a blog or website please let people know about our Kickstarter campaign. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!!
With hella gratitude and love,
xo Karina Denike xo

Risks and challenges
Since we are 75% of the way into completion of the album, I feel like we’re past some challenges that could potentially arise in a project like this. We’ve experienced some for sure; studio’s closing down, old tube microphones acting up causing cancelled studio time and re-do’s, piano re-tunes, and even a flood. Going forward there are always possibilities for needing to re-do or fix a mix, the mastering, or a problem in artwork/printing or duplication. These things can happen, but I try to avoid them by being as meticulous as possible, and collaborating with professional people. I've been putting out records for years and have seen the industry change drastically and have managed to still be a working artist. Fluidity and resourcefulness will continue to be the tools I use to overcome any problems that may arise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
