We’re working on our second full-length album, Ghost Light, and we can’t wait to share it with you. But we only have one short month to raise the funds we need to finish this record before we head out on our sixth European tour. Let's do this together!
Our Illustrious History
When Ukrainian-born, Brooklyn-bred guitarist Dima Kay founded Karikatura in 2009, he was imagining a band that could travel the world, sharing original, hopeful music and open a space for conversation and cultural exchange.
Eight years later, we have done a lot towards reaching that goal, but we still have a long way to go. We’ve played over 600 shows, in 21 countries and 25 US states. We've toured a lot, including self-funded, DIY tours of Japan, Europe, and the USA.
We’ve also played the Redbull Sounderground Festival in Saõ Paolo, Brazil, and this year we toured Chile, Haiti, The Dominican Republic, Mexico and Panamá through a special State Department program, American Music Abroad.
Over the years, we self-released two EPs, Muzon (2010) and Departures (2012), and we put out the album Eyes Wide (2014) - which went to #1 on the iTunes World Music charts on release day- and the EP Speak Now (2016) on Ropeadope Records.
The Ghost Light Fundraiser
Why are we asking for your support now? In our eighth year, we’re ready to bring our music to the next level. We’ve never done this before, but we’re asking for your help to release our new album, Ghost Light in a bigger and better way, with beautiful artwork, on vinyl, with new, imaginative music videos, and promoted with professional PR, to help us share our music beyond our own networks.
To be clear, we’ve gotten this far thanks to you, and we’re very grateful, but we need your support to take our music to the next level! Let’s put out this record together!
The Story of Ghost Light
A “ghost light” is a single electric bulb that illuminates the stage of an unoccupied theater, when the space would otherwise be completely dark. It's a powerful image of what we are trying to bring to the world as musicians, and it speaks to where we're at, emotionally, as six individuals and as a band.
We’ve been working intently on this record for over a year: we wrote 40 potential songs and from that pool we narrowed it down to just nine songs that belong together and that we believe speak to personal and universal emotions: striving, doubt, loss, self-realization, love, hope and joy.
We tried a lot of new techniques in the recording of Ghost Light, to capture these emotional landscapes. We added new textures to our musical palate: lush strings, sensuous vocal layers, flutes, found sound samples and other bold production choices.
After several rounds of demos, we recorded the album at Dima’s studio, Horosho Records. Dima put in countless hours engineering the sessions, editing and producing this record. This process allowed us to explore the studio as a composition tool, to refine our vision for the album over time, and to rework our ideas and craft the best album possible.
We chose to mix Ghost Light with the master Daniel Schlett at Strange Weather Studios. Daniel mixed our debut album Eyes Wide, and the experience was so special that we couldn’t imagine bringing this record anywhere else. We’ve already spent a week of intense mixing at Strange Weather in Williamsburg, and there’s still more work to do!
Give, and you will receive!
For the first time, we’re pressing this album on vinyl. Vinyl is the most in-demand format for our listeners, probably because it is such a great way to listen to music! It’s a medium that never really went away, but, as CDs fade from daily use, it makes more and more sense to put the record on wax.
Of course, we’ll be releasing in digital and CD formats as well. We’ll wrap it all in beautiful original artwork and deliver the vision through new music videos, with your support.
In exchange for your support, we have so many exclusive rewards, from getting to hear the record long before its release, to personalized messages and gifts, an exclusive T-Shirt only for our backers to show the world you're in our squad, to private concerts, dinners and so much more.
One of the most exciting exclusive rewards is The Magnetophon EP, a previously unreleased video EP, recorded live in Maastricht, Netherlands during our 2016 European tour. Check out those rewards!

Risks and challenges
As independent artists, we’ve never had the benefit of record-label support, in the traditional financial sense. That remains true for the release of this album. We’ve always taken the risk of investing in our own recordings, tours and merchandise, and we can positively guarantee that the band has always delivered a solid return on our investments: Each album, each tour advanced us along our path, and delivered improved financial returns. The more we tour, the more records we sell, the more we build our audience and earning capacity. Each album we record, the more we refine our vision and reach the audience that wants to hear what we’re putting out.
While we’re confident we can release Ghost Light in the best way, with your support, we know there are potential challenges that could push our tentative release timeline back: Pressing vinyl is unpredictable, and there can be delays of six months or more at the plant. Also, working with other creative professionals requires flexibility. For example, it takes at least three months of lead-time to launch a successful promotional campaign for an album, and even then, there are no guarantees. Music video production can be delayed by factors beyond our direct control. That said, we will keep you updated at all times, and we know that, with your love, Ghost Light will illuminate our stages very soon!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
