About this project
Freeform Peyote Beading is a form of bead weaving, worked with needle and thread, stitching individual beads together into wonderfully organic, original forms. There's no set pattern to follow, no counting or hard and fast rules, but there is an underlying structure that makes it all work.
I'm Karen Williams, and I've been practicing and teaching this unique style of bead weaving for the past 10 years. This will be my third book on beading, and my second focusing on freeform peyote. It's also, by far, my most ambitious book project to date. That's why I need some help to make it happen.
The book will be called "Explorations in Freeform Peyote Beading: Original Art Jewelry & Beyond." Here are just a few highlights of this project:
150 Pages: Nearly twice the length of my first two books, the additional length will allow me to delve deeper in sharing the possibilities of this versatile medium.
More Designs, More Artwork, All New Projects: Most of the additional pages will be devoted to more and expanded beading examples and more in-depth tutorials with all new designs. And of course, all of the images and illustrations will be in full color.
Works by Other Artists: I'm hard at work creating all new examples for this book, but my work isn't enough this time. By including examples of other artists' work I can multiply the range of ideas and inspiration, giving you more to draw on in your own design. I am in awe of the wonderfully vibrant community of artists working in this medium and want to showcase some of the best the community has to offer.
Not Just Jewelry: A completely new chapter entitled “Beyond Jewelry” which will focus on freeform beading as a sculptural medium, including beading over ready made forms such as glass bottles as well as free-standing sculptures.
Index for Easier Access to Information: I'm currently at work developing a list of keywords and phrases for a comprehensive index to make finding information even easier.
Digital Publishing: I will be producing a PDF version of Explorations, (and am hoping to publish for Kindle as well if we meet my first stretch goal).
Expected Publication Date: December 2014. My plan is to have it available on Amazon by or before December 1st and in your hands before Christmas.
It's a long journey between here and there, with many, many steps. To help guide me on my way, I have my detailed outline along with my somewhat daunting production schedule with deadlines for each element of writing, beading, photography, illustration, editing, page layout and more. As this is my third book, I feel confident that I can meet my production schedule if this is my sole focus.
Purpose of this Campaign
The purpose of this campaign is to both to build a community of people as excited about this project as I am and to help me fund this project. Your support will go directly towards making this book happen. The more support I receive, the more I can do and the better this project will be.
Whether or not the Kickstarter succeeds, I am committed to moving forward with the project, but a successful Kickstarter campaign will allow me to do it better (with more projects and more artists) and faster (it's far less likely for my publication deadline to slip if I can focus entirely on this project).
Specific pledge rewards start at $10, but EVERYONE who backs my project at any level from $1 on up will be listed on a special page on my website and blog as an amazingly wonderful supporter of this project (unless of course you ask me not to) and will receive exclusive project updates. You'll know that you helped turn this project into a real, live book. (Just like the Blue Fairy, but with books instead of little boys).
Add Ons & Campaign Extras
If we reach full funding by midnight tonight, I will add a digital (PDF) copy of my first book, Freeform Peyote Beading, to ALL pledges of $40 or more.
This is the first time that I have ever offered Freeform Peyote Beading in a digital format, and you will not see this again anytime soon.
Additional Copies of Explorations - $30. Any backer at the $10 level or above can purchase additional signed copies of the book for $30. Simply add $30 for each book (up to 10 total books due to Kickstarter rules).
$10 for set of 5 Postcards. Purchase a series of five postcards of images from the book by adding $10 to your pledge. Add $2 for postage if your pledge level doesn’t currently include shipping. If we reach the $6000 stretch goal (where I'd promised to include a free set of postcards with every pledge that included a print copy of the book), I'll either send you an extra set, or refund your purchase. Your call.
Stretch Goals and Additional Rewards
If I raise more than my initial goal, things just keep getting better:
First five backers at $60 or more (Achieved) will also receive a 2014 wall calendar featuring twelve of my original beading designs (freeform peyote and right angle weave). If you're outside the US, I'll ship the calendar to you if you're willing to cover shipping.
These Stretch Goals are cumulative.
$5000 - Kindle Format. When we reach this level, I will also produce a Kindle version of my book! Amazon's conversion engine doesn't work for books of this complexity (it can't handle the photos), so much of the work will need to be done by hand. This includes reformatting all of the images and illustrations, text and layout, and placing each image and illustration into the text individually to make sure that it stays with its associated text. If I do this, I want to do it right, which means lots and lots of time. My hope is to produce a Kindle version whether or not we reach this stretch goal, but this would seal the deal.
All supporters whose pledge includes an digital version will have their choice of PDF or Kindle, or even both if you prefer.
$6000 - More Artists. More artists means a broader range of ideas and inspiration as every artist has their own style and method of working. Your support allows me to greatly expand the number of artists’ whose work is included in the book. My plan is to send a finished copy of the book to every artist whose work appears within its pages, as well as a small honorarium for a select group of featured artists. Your pledge helps make this possible.
When we reach this goal, I'll also produce a series of five postcards of images from the book. A complete set will be added to any pledge where I am already shipping a physical copy of the book.
Additional sets of postcards (5) may be purchased for $10. Add $2 for pledge levels that don’t currently include shipping.
$7000 - I'll increase the postcards series to ten, including a
complete set with any pledge where I am already shipping a physical copy of the book.
Additional sets of postcards (10) may be purchased for $15. Add $2.50 for pledge levels that don’t currently include shipping.
$8000 - Kindle Version of Freeform Peyote Beading. When we reach this level, I will also produce a Kindle version of Freeform Peyote Beading, making it available in digital format for the first time since its original publication.
All supporters whose pledge includes a digital copy of Explorations will receive a Kindle version of this book as well. Otherwise, you can add the Kindle version of Freeform Peyote Beading to your pledge for $15.
If and when we reach $8000, I'll figure out additional stretch goals and ways to make this project even better.
Reviews from Previous Books
Kristen, who considers "freeform" a swear word, reviewed my book on the popular jewelry design blog, Art Jewelry Elements.
"I bought your book last year but just got around to reading it this morning. Your work is fabulous and I just love your book. I noticed that you are from Seattle. I would simply love to take class from you. When is your next freeform class? I want to be there!" - Pamm, from an email.
"I'd experimented will freeform beading in the past but was not happy with my results therefore I played rip-it with the piece. Then along came Ms. Williams with the foresight to guide us in the mechanics of actually designing a piece. There is a lot of freeform art out there that is not wearable. I've always wanted to create one-of-a-kind pieces that were wearable. She shows us how to measure and make templates for our own creations. We don't have to follow her patterns or anyone else's. She's given us the building blocks to become our own designer. Since freeform is not about following someone's pattern this is great. This book has empowered me to bring into existence art from my spirit that is truly wearable." excerpt from a review by An Amazon Customer.
Risks and challenges
As with all book projects, there could be delays in the production process which would delay the publication date. However, as this is my third book, I feel confident that I can meet my production schedule barring unforeseen circumstances (like being hit by a bus or a printing strike at the printers).Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
