About this project
The Complete Career Change Program™ is a new solution to overcome the Applicant Tracking Systems. The Wall Street Journal, 2012 and Forbes, 2014 called the Applicant Tracking System a “resume black hole”(1,2) and CIO, 2012 stated, “Error-prone applicant tracking systems kill 75 percent of job seeker’s chances of landing an interview as soon as they submit their resumes, despite how qualified they may be.”(3)
If you have been wondering why your job search has been so painful, you are not alone. These systems are part of a $4B (4,8) industry meant to save recruiters time by limiting how many candidates they have to review. In other words, their job is to screen you out as a candidate (7) and they are doing a fantastic job at it, maybe too good. According to a 2011, Wall Street Journal article, 52% of employers are complaining that they cannot find qualified hires (5,9) and a 2014 PBS story on modern hiring systems found “Modern recruiting technology is a failure.” (6) These systems do not work for candidates or employers but they are here to stay because the average Fortune 500 job advertisement receives over 1,000 applicants and recruiters do not have time to look at all of them.(1)
A Wharton School of Business Researcher Robert Cappelli stated "One manager told me that in his company 25,000 applicants had applied for a standard engineering job, yet none were rated as qualified. How could that be? Just put in enough of these yes/no requirements and it becomes mathematically unlikely that anyone will get through." (10)
If you have applied for a job recently you might have noticed that you have to re-enter all of the information from your resume, that is the Applicant Tracking System.
I have developed unique methods to deal with modern hiring issues. To be successful in a career change, it is critical to learn these techniques to beat the system.
Not only do my clients complain about how long it takes to apply for jobs and never hearing back, they also are concerned about explaining terminations or dismissals. Job seekers are aware that if they say they were fired from their last job, they are being eliminated as a qualified candidate for open jobs. The program presents five alternative explanations that are both truthful and proven to work.
Then there are the other concerns of explaining gaps between jobs on the resume. The Applicant Tracking Systems have significantly reduced the possibility of using a “functional style” resume and force the emphasis on most recent job title and dates. Not all gaps are created equal either. The program provides strategies for gaps.
In other cases, candidates have trouble identifying career goals, performing salary negotiations, getting promoted, or switching industries and job titles. It turns out all of these issues and their solutions relate to each other, solving for the Applicant Tracking System means solving for all career change issues.
These Complete Career Change Program™ methods have been tested to work consistently over time and with various job candidates. The system is based on my doctoral research into the job-skill mismatch and over 10 years of successful career coaching. It turns out that the newest expensive applicant software used by corporations is based on the innate human psychology of pattern recognition. This psychology can be used to beat the Applicant Tracking System and this is the most concise and targeted program to get YOUR resume read by more employers and fast track your career!
About the Creator
The project’s creator is Dr. Karen Gurney. In 2012, I obtained my Ph.D. focused on workforce and economic development and I also have a Masters in Business Administration (MBA). I have dedicated my life to helping others obtain career success. As a career coach since 2009 with my company Career IQ, I have developed unique methods to deal with modern hiring issues. I am a published author, regular keynote speaker, and my Linkedin profile has numerous recommendations and endorsements.
The core of this project is to create the professional video instructional design portion of the program. Video instruction is critical to project success because many of the concepts need to be seen in order to be applied to each candidate’s career change. The market is flooded with generic career advice, which perpetuates career change issues. This program teaches a keyword driven customized profile solution that allows the computer systems to recognize a candidate as a match for the open position. The program uses the primary aspect of human psychology used in hiring, pattern recognition, to beat the applicant tracking system at its own game. This also works for interviewing and even selecting a new career. The videos will work together with the ten written lessons, associated exercises, and audio instructional portions of the program. They do not duplicate each other. They present the information in different ways to facilitate learning.
The goal of the Complete Career Change Program™ Kickstarter Project is to create a system that supports any career change. This is a completely new program with unique methods and is not based on any other career book that has been out for decades. The Complete Career Change Program™ will include 10 written lessons, associated audio lessons, and the video tutorials that will be accessed through a membership portal for three payments of $19.95 over three months. The target date for video completion is for the end of November 2014. However, the written lessons will be available by the time the project funds in September. Backers have an option to receive a partial or full program at a discount.
The funding goal is to raise $5,000 in 30 days. Since I am not an experienced video instructional designer, I will be hiring one to implement the lessons. The fund-raising goal of $5,000 is the bare minimum that I need to move the project to completion. Kickstarter funding is all-or-nothing so I need to raise the $5,000 minimum. I hope the project will raise several times this amount to pursue the development of a packaged DVD, CD, and printed workbook product. The current state of hiring is only being discussed in news outlets that are geared towards executives. The only people that can usually afford a career coach is someone at the executive level as well. I want this information available to anyone that wants and needs it.

Because the video design portion is something I have to hire for, and it is an art-orientated design project, there may be creative delays. If that happens I will release the non-professional videos I will be providing to the designer as content to the site.
