The name CUBE was born from a combination of two things. Mike Dudek’s (ClickyPost.com) original walnut, 9 hole pen holder is aptly named the “Cube” and the atomic number for the element aluminum is 13, so combine them and you get “CU13E” (the 13 looks like a letter B, get it?).
Each CUBE is machined from a solid block of 6061 aluminum (or brass) and features black Delrin inserts, rubber feet, custom surface finishing, and high-quality engraving. The custom-machined inserts are pressed into the body of the CUBE and have a bore of 9/16” to accommodate most pens. The rubber feet keep the CUBE from sliding around and slightly elevate it from the surface it rests on, giving it the illusion of weightlessness. When, in fact the aluminum CUBE weighs 1 Lb, 14.5 oz and the brass version weighs 5 lbs, 10oz. This insures that your pens will be safe from being accidentally knocked over, or rolling off a desk. Each pen is separated and will not knock into each other, causing unwanted damage. Plus, you can safely display your pen collection in a unique and organized fashion.
We have designed the CUBE to be long-lasting and durable. The materials chosen in the construction of the CUBE ensure that it will look and perform beautifully for a lifetime. For the aluminum version of the CUBE, you have your choice of an anodized finish in the following colors: silver (clear), black, orange, blue, or red. Or, you can pick the raw, tumbled version for that worn-in look. The brass version of the CUBE comes in a raw, machined finish and will darken and wear with time. Or, you can polish it and keep it looking bright and shiny. And, as always, each CUBE was designed and manufactured by us, here in the USA.
The aluminum used in the CUBE, while common, is expensive in pieces large enough to machine into the final product. Purchasing this material in bulk helps us to reduce costs and increase output. The CUBE is a new product on the market and unless our project is successful, would be unlikely to be produced commercially, due to manufacturing costs. Plus, if we meet our goal, we will be able to add another well-designed, American made product to the market. And, you as a backer, get a really awesome pen holder as a result.
Risks and challenges
Because we design and manufacture all of our own products here in the USA, we have complete control over the manufacturing process. We have established relationships with our material and hardware vendors and have complete confidence in their abilities to supply us with what we need to get the job done. That being said, if we become massively over-funded, our original estimated delivery dates will become pushed back to accommodate the larger production numbers. Anyone who pledges to our project can do so in confidence, as we have a history of delivering quality rewards to our backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
