About this project
IF YOU MISSED OUR PROJECT HERE ON KICKSTARTER, YOU CAN GET YOUR BOLT HERE-
Cool Material- "No. Overseas. Manufacturing. At all... It’s like being able to support an episode of a Discovery Channel show except you also get a sweet pen out of the deal."
Gear Hungry- "New day, new pen on Kickstarter - but this one's different."
Surplus Mag- "...the kind of tool any guy who appreciates well made every-day products will want to own."
Because of our previous success here on Kickstarter we decided to design and prototype another pen project and we would like to share it with you. We call it the Bolt.
We learned a lot from our last pen project here on Kickstarter. Not everyone likes a pen with a lid, so we have designed one very similar to the standard click pen everyone is familiar with, but we added our own twist, literally. The Bolt pen features a bolt action mechanism that allows the pen tip to be extended and retracted with a flick of a finger or a simple push and twist. By pushing, and then rotating the rear portion of the pen, the ink is extended or retracted. The mechanism that allows this to happen is fully visible and gives a nice mechanical look/feel to the pen. We have reduced any unnecessary decoration and ornamentation from the pen to give it a clean, sleek look that we believe will remain timeless.
The Bolt is machined from either solid aluminum or brass and has all stainless steel hardware, including the clip. All materials will be left raw, with no coatings or finishes. This allows the materials to age naturally and gives the user the option to customize their pen without worrying about first stripping an existing finish.
Our latest prototypes were built by Bill, completely by hand, on manual machines here in the shop. This enables us to fine tune our design and get it exactly right before we declare it finished. We are not dependent on an overseas supplier or factory to send us our parts, we make them ourselves. We do not simply supply someone else with our design and collect a check when they finish and ship our parts for us. We are proud of the fact that we are employing family, friends and neighbors while we make products here in the USA, products that we hope people will enjoy and use for a long time to come.
Because we design and manufacture everything ourselves here at KarasKustoms, we have complete control over the process and quality. And, it allows us to share the process with you, the community that supports us. So, if our funding is successful, we will be posting tons of photos and video of the manufacturing process so that those who pledged can see exactly how our products are made.
The Bolt is 5.5" long and .45" in diameter. All the hardware is stainless steel and takes the same size Allen wrench, which will be included with the pen. The brass version weighs 2.8 ounces and the aluminum version weighs just barely over 1 ounce (with a refill installed). Just like our last pen project, we are not including a refill with the Bolt. There are just so many options to choose from when it comes to refills that are compatible with the Bolt, we didn't want to include something that will most likely just be thrown away because it wasn't what the owner preferred. Because, once again, isn't a reusable pen body supposed to help reduce waste, not create it? Just grab your favorite Parker ballpoint compatible refill and you're set.
To replace an ink refill in the Bolt, carefully unscrew the front portion of the pen body. Be careful not to lose the spring. Place the spring onto the new refill and insert it into the front portion of the pen body. Then, thread the front portion of the pen body back into the rear portion, making sure the threads are properly lined up. It’s that simple.
One of the best features of the Bolt? No logos anywhere! This is your pen, not a billboard, so we don't advertise on something you own. Just do us a favor, when someone asks about your pen, and they will, tell them it was made by an American company, employing American workers called KarasKustoms.
People have been asking about what refills currently work with the Bolt so we have compiled a short list.
