Thanks for taking a look at our project!
We are proud to introduce to you a product we are really exited about- the RENDER K. The RENDER K is a machined pen body that works with several popular pen refills, so you can have the look of a custom pen and still maintain the feel of your favorite ink. We designed the RENDER K to work primarily with any of the Pilot Hi-Tec-C refills, but it will also work with any Parker compatible refills as well (including the Fisher PR style Space Pen refill). To see why the Pilot Hi-Tec-C is such a great pen, and why we chose it for our project, take look at this explanation by Jet Pens. Because we design and manufacture the RENDER K, we have complete control over the product. No waiting on some company overseas to send us the latest sample, if we need to see the latest version, we make it, ourselves.
Here's Bill making prototype parts on the lathe, here in the shop.
First run parts straight out of the machine. Almost there!
Aluminum and brass prototypes at a production ready state. Nice, huh?
Here is the aluminum version of the RENDER K with the Pilot Hi-Tec-C refill installed. Notice the nice machined finish.
Each RENDER K is ready to accept any Hi-Tec-C refill, just drop it in and your ready to go. If you want to run a Parker compatible refill, just drop in the provided spacer, then your refill of choice, and then the spring, before threading the pen tip into place and you're set. Now you can easily find a refill at any office supply store if you run out of your favorite ink and can't wait.
After much consideration, we have decided to not ship the RENDER K with any refills included. Because there are so many different brands and types of refill that will work with the RENDER K, we didn't want to ship a refill that may get tossed out because it was the wrong size/type/color. After all, isn't the point of a re-useable pen body to help reduce waste? This also makes the pen less expensive, allowing you to purchase more of your favorite refills with the savings.
The RENDER K has many features that make it a unique, quality pen. Each pen starts out as a solid piece of material and we machine all the parts ourselves (don't worry, we take all the excess material from the machining process and recycle it). The thread-on cap uses triple-start threads to securely attach itself to the pen and to allow the removal of the cap with only 1.5 revolutions. The aluminum version of the RENDER K is machined from 6061 aluminum and will feature an anodized finish to help protect the aluminum body from damage. The brass RENDER K comes in a raw finish and will develop a beautiful aged finish with time and use. Each pen is a little over 5" long and 1/2" in diameter (minus the clip). The aluminum pen weighs 1.1 oz while the brass version weighs in at a hefty 3.3 oz. One of the best features of the RENDER K? No logos anywhere! This is your pen, not a billboard, so we don't advertise on something you own. Just do us a favor, when someone asks about your pen, and they will, tell them it was made by an American company, employing American workers called KarasKustoms.
Okay Kickstarters, this is where YOU come in. While we can machine the parts for the pen bodies ourselves, we need to have custom tooling made to help us make the stamped stainless steel clips. By pledging to purchase a RENDER K pen (or two), you can help us reach our financial goal so that we can afford to make the parts we need to make the RENDER K a reality. Plus, by doing so, you get to own a really cool, well-made pen.
If you are giving the RENDER K as a gift, follow the link below the photo for a larger image you can print or email so you have something to wrap this holiday season. IMAGE LINK
The cap can "rest" on the back of the pen, but it doesn't attach. Every way we tried to get the lid to attach on the back just ended up making the pen look foolish. Another reason is to prevent pen ninjas from taking your pen and not returning it. Just unscrew the lid and hold on to it while they use your pen and they will return it to you. If you are on the run and worried about the cap getting lost, just clip on a pocket or bag and it will stay put until you need it.
Post Kickstarter Pre-Orders Now Available.
Because we have had so many inquiries about if/when we are going to start selling the RENDER K to the public, we have decided that we are going to start taking pre-orders to begin shipping after we have fulfilled our Kickstarter orders. If you have friends or family that missed out on our Kickstarter project, they can order a pen on our website and will be shipped as soon as possible after all the Kickstarter orders have been filled.
If a pre-order is placed on our website, the funds will be transferred as soon as the order is placed, not when the order ships. But rest assured, you will receive your pen. We just wanted to be transparent about this so people don't think we are taking their money and running with it. If anyone is uncomfortable with this scenario, we recommend they check back with our website and order when we are caught up and in full production. We just wanted to give people options.
You can place your pre-orders here- http://karaskustoms.com/pens.html
We eventually plan on offering other variations on the RENDER K after our funding period here on Kickstarter ends, but for right now we are only offering the aluminum and brass versions in their current configuration. This includes hardware and finishes as well.
