About

Nonbinary Folks in Tech You Should Know

an image of the first iteration of this zine
an image of the first iteration of this zine

A 4-part zine series

Background:

Many of us are familiar with stories that emphasize the work of cis-white men in tech, and even stories of women in tech, but there are still so many stories of non-binary folks in tech that have yet to be shared & celebrated. This zine series aims to do just that, by amplifying the work of these individuals in our community, to center their experiences, and illuminate the multifaceted ways in which non-binary folks are living in their truth, and doing integral work all across the tech landscape.

The zines will each center the stories of 25 Nonbinary folks, alongside an illustration of them, and info on ways to support their work. It will also include some 101-type knowledge for cis-folks.

The project's goal is to get the first two zines ready while fundraising starts, to appropriately compensate the folks working on the project, while we finalize how the zine series will be distributed. Another aspect of this campaign is to collaborate on a talk about this zine series to submit to tech conferences. These talks will showcase a few stories from the zine series, the journey to creating it, and why knowing more about the contributions Non-binary folks in tech are making is important.

This project is important because:

  • It's important that the work of Nonbinary folks in tech is known and celebrated.
  • The false narrative that there are little to no Nonbinary folks in tech needs to be destroyed.
  • The effort to be inclusive of more folks of marginalized genders too often feels like an afterthought, and that's not OK.
  • The emotional labor to educate cis folks should not be the burden of non-binary folks.
  • I believe in the destruction of the oppressive social construct of gender, and recognize that In discussing the complexities of gender with others, and with ourselves, we are doing that work.
  • This is an opportunity to get some non-binary creatives of color some well-deserved coin.

About The Team:

I'm working with Non-binary POC Illustrators and editors for each zine volume, here's a little bit about each of them:

Volume One Editor: Karari Olvera Orozco

Meet Karari.   Karari Olvera Orozco (They/She) is a non-binary trans femme and a dear friend of mine who also co-founded of United Latinx Pride, and is on the board of the Trans Latinx Coalition. They are a writer, activist, public speaker, and makeup aficionadx, and I am consistently humbled, uplifted, and just moved by their words, written or spoken. Writing is not my forte, but I knew the support I could get from Karari would make this zine series magical, and thoughtful, and I can't wait to transform and share stories about everyone through Karari's fine editing skills!

You can support Karari by Checking out their instagram @Kararikue

Volume One Illustrator: Van Binfa

Meet Van.  Van Binfa (He/Him) is a local non-binary artist and community gem, Co -founder of the Soy Quien Soy Trans Empowerment Collective and Writer of more fan-fiction than you can imagine! Van's work has always brought me utter delight, and I knew that he would be someone that would be attuned to showing folks in all their fierceness and realness, so I'm really excited to be working with him on the first volume!

You can support Van by checking out his art, and commissioning him for your own illustration work!

Volume Two Editor:  Salvador Valli

Salvador (Sal) Valli is a queer, mixed-race Chicanx storyteller who uses visual imagery to share stories that center the experiences of folks containing multiple intersections of identity. Sal is excited to be working as one of the editors for Enbies in Tech, a project that is being used as a necessary and needed platform to share the multifaceted experiences of enby folks in a field traditionally dominated by cis-het folks.

Volume Two Illustrator: Tesh Silver

Tesh Silver is a creative with over 12 years of wide-range professional art experience. Illustration is her passion, using both traditional media as well as digital programs to create pieces that are both captivating and magical. She is also an intuitive graphic designer, working with local organizations and small business owners alike: be it by logo design, promotional pieces or other marketing collateral. She is currently a teaching artist at Hyde Park Art Center where she works closely with youth. She strives to create work that uplifts, heals and promotes the resilience of marginalized people.    Check out her work at : https://www.astratesh.com

Volume Three Editor: Lisa Avila

Lisa Avila (they/them) is a mixed bag of geek, creative, ambition and adventures. They come to this work with a background and interest in Events Management, Advertising/PR, Design, and Latinx Studies. Lisa is an excellent Copywriter and Editor, and I'm very excited to have their help getting the project done!

Volume Three Illustrator: Suraaj de Silva

Suraaj (they/them) is a queer, non-binary artist and graphic designer by trade. They've been drawing since they were two years old and haven't stopped since. Design school has helped them develop a highly versatile artistic style, as well as strong skills in visual storytelling and concept and character design.

Volume Four Editor: (Being Confirmed)

Volume Four Illustrator: Ky Morris

Ky Morris is a trans*masculine Nonbinary black visual artist from New York who greatly enjoys putting a part of themself into their works, which you can see on their website and in their Webcomic, Stars Burn Out! You can support them through the following links:

About Me:

I am a black, cis, queer, woman of color in tech, dedicated to pushing the industry out of their comfort zones, and putting the work in to make our culture & creations more accessible and inclusive.

I'm a career-changing software developer, currently working at TableXI, a custom software development consultancy in Chicago committing to Tech Done Right.

I'm a Chicago chapter lead organizer for Write/Speak/Code, an organization whose mission is to promote the visibility and leadership of technologists with marginalized genders through peer-led professional development.

I'm a Co-Founder of United Latinx Pride, a Non-profit in Chicago formed to meet the need to educate, celebrate, and amplify who we are as a LGBTQQIA Latinx community.

What Can You Do?:

- If you know any Black or Indigenous Nonbinary folks of color in Tech, I'd love to be introduced!
   - Follow my progress via Instagram (@kara.codes)
   - Keep me accountable; (Particularly my Nonbinary friends, I appreciate your opinion/perspective as I complete this project)

Risks and challenges

This will be a series of firsts for me: First zine series, first time working with printing outside of a Kinkos, First kickstarter. There's a lot to learn, and a lot I might not know, but I know that drive that I have to seeing this zine series in folks hands, reading about so many of our friends, colleagues and leaders in our community, will help me make this happen.

At this moment, I've finalized 3 of the 4 zine series subjects, editors, and illustrators. I am on track to getting teams and subjects for zine 4, and will continue to update everyone as I finalize publisher and shipping support.
