About this project

We are fundraising to bring Mental to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017 following an overwhelming response from critics, audiences, and mental health organisations at VAULT Festival earlier this year.

Kane & Kim in rehearsals

At a time when mental health is increasingly making the headlines, yet still so many are unable to speak about their experience for fear of stigma, Mental tells a personal story that will get people talking.

Created by mother and son, Kim and Kane Power, Mental is a powerful insight into one family's experience of living with a mental illness.

Hi, I’m Kane, and this show is about me and my mum, and her mental health. I want you to watch this show and feel like you’ve come and had a chat with an old friend. The show has live music which I make myself, and songs I have written which I sing, there is storytelling, and acting, and movement, and memories of me and my mum.

However the more I perform the show I realise that Mental is also about more than me and my mum and her mental illness. It is about the mind, yes my mum’s mind and my mind but it’s also about your mind too. And if it’s about the mind, somehow it’s about the heart, the soul, and about humans being.”

What people have said about Mental:

How you can help!

As you can see we have received an incredible amount of support and positivity for the show from mental health organisations, fellow theatre makers, friends, fans, general public, and those affected by mental health issues.

We are so pleased the show has had a meaningful impact on those who’ve seen it, and that we have been able to contribute to campaigns to end the stigma and change the conversation around mental health in the UK. So we would love to take the show's impact to many more at Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world and offers an unparalleled opportunity to get the show seen far and wide. Edinburgh can be an incredible launching ground and we believe it can help us realise the show's future ambitions of a National and International Tour.

Based on the strength of the show at VAULT Festival, Assembly offered us a months long run at Assembly Roxy, Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017. Assembly is an awesome organisation, one of the longest running of the multi-venue operators, and the show producers (Tid & Hannah) have only had excellent experiences with the Assembly team after working with them on previous productions.

To date the show has been self-funded from personal earned income and work offered in kind from the team, friends, and supporters. However the costs of Edinburgh are significant which is why we need your help.

To take Mental to Edinburgh we need to raise a minimum of £3991 to cover the essential costs of accommodation, travel, fees, production and administrative costs for 4 members of the team.

Budget Breakdown

The show is being run as a not-for-profit project for public benefit so should the production ever begin to generate profit this will be donated to the charities below.

What you can make happen...

Any donations, large or small, are all very gratefully received. Thank you for your support!

Team Mental

Kim Power is Kane’s mum. She is co-creator of the show and its inspiration. It is her 21 years of lived experience and her relationship with Kane that has been the source of the shows creation. Read more on Kim’s thoughts about the show here

Kane Power is Kim’s son. He is an Actor, Theatre Maker and Musician based in Manchester. He developed much of his artistic practice while working with the Bristol Old Vic Young Company and as part of the first ‘Made in Bristol‘ cohort which produced ‘The Wardrobe Ensemble‘. He graduated from Manchester School of Theatre in 2015 with a BA Hons in Acting. Mental is Kane’s first solo project under Kane Power Theatre. Kane is co-creator/writer and performer.

Alice Lamb is a Bristol based actor, improviser and theatre maker. She has known the team working on Mental since her time making theatre as part of Bristol Old Vic Young Company. Since graduating from Manchester School of Theatre, Alice has become a member of the Impromptu Shakespeare Company and has collaborated on a number of projects with local theatre makers, most recently, Fen theatre. Alice is co-creator/writer & associate director.

Tid is director of the show. He was director of Bristol Old Vic Young Company 2005 - 2011, created the ‘Made in Bristol’ programme which launched ‘The Wardrobe Ensemble’, and was the Clore Theatre Fellow 2011. Working with fellow team members Hannah Osborne and Ina Bergreen Tid has been co-creator/director on a number of recent theatrical successes including the Edinburgh hit Jurassic Park, VAULT Festival Origins Award winner Mars Actually both with Superbolt Theatre, and the 5 star sell-out hip hop hit Licensed To Ill.

Hannah Osborne is the show's co-producer. She is the General Manager of The Corner Shop PR and has worked for Complicite, Avalon Press & Promotions and Warwick Arts Centre. She is the producer of Edinburgh hit Jurassic Park, VAULT Festival Origins Award winner Mars Actually, and the 5 star hit Licensed to Ill, and she acts as General Manager for Superbolt Theatre.

Peter R. Reynolds is the musical director of the show. He is a musician, composer and musical director. He has written music since 1989 and was the MD and composer for No Fit State Circus. She has been the production and technical whizz behind many Edinburgh hits, including Superbolt's Jurassic Park and Theatre Témoin’s The Fantasist.

Ruby Spencer Pugh is the show's designer. She is a Bristol based set and costume designer, making and designing for theatre, film and festivals. Ruby began making theatre with the Bristol Old Vic Young Company aged six, and went on to study Theatre Design at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where she won the P&C Carne Prize for gaining the highest mark. Recent Design credits include; A Spark and A Beating Heart (Firebird Theatre) Mental (VAULT Festival) Then Again (Tremolo Theatre) The Love of the Nightingale (Bristol Old Vic YC) Little Tim and the Brave Sea Captain (The Wardrobe Ensemble, Bristol Old Vic).

Risks and challenges

Edinburgh Festival Fringe is a dynamic and challenging place, with many companies seeking to attract audiences and sell tickets. So taking a show is not without risks. However three of the team behind the show have had numerous previous successes at the festival and it is this experience that will help manage the risk for Mental.

Hannah, Tid, and Ina between them represent risk management that covers marketing & PR, production & tech, and strategy & finance. As a team they delivered a sell-out run (95% tickets sales in a 170 seater venue) of Superbolt’s Jurassic Park. While we recognise Mental is a very different offer our strategy reflects this. We have followed the 30% ticket sales advice guidelines from the Edinburgh Fringe, so the budget reflects this. The show will perform in a 60 seater venue and additional budgeting has been applied to marketing & PR. We have put in place plans for cross promotion between the 3 shows we are managing (Mental, The Jurassic Parks, Mars Actually) so we feel confident audiences will be robust.

The team is also currently seeking sponsorship and partnerships with leading mental health organisations to cement the show with those likely to be interested.

Artistically the show has proved its quality at VAULT Festival and we feel confident audiences in Edinburgh will respond similarly. The show has gained significant momentum from its VAULT premiere, this momentum will be given another boost shortly before Edinburgh when it performs in Bristol at The Wardrobe Theatre 7th - 10th June. http://thewardrobetheatre.com/livetheatre/mental/
