About this project
Is it a Tent? A Hammock? An Animal? Yes, Yes, and Yes. You asked us for a world class tent. And we asked ourselves, what if?
With the help of our MOB community, we've spent the last few years discovering the most important qualities in a tent: versatility, durability and livability. When designing the Sunda, we made sure that it could adapt to your needs in any environment, outlast any adventure–big or small, and feel like home wherever you decide to set up camp.
Then, as the lovers of hammocks that we are, we wondered, “why not use what we know about hammocks and take this tent off the ground?" Add a little inspiration from the animal kingdom (a flying lemur named the Sunda!), and we were off to the races…
The Sunda is now ready for your lifetime of adventure.
We know the difficulty of matching variable landscapes with the changing needs of your daytime, nighttime, and weekend adventures, so we’ve created a product that can do it all, and then some. Think of the Sunda as four unique shelters in one: your best-in-class tent, all-in-one camping hammock, ultra-light shelter, and minimalist hammock.
The Sunda stands alone as a best-in-class, freestanding 2(+) person tent. Stretching to 8 feet 4 inches long and 4 feet 2 inches wide, tent mode boasts 35 square feet of the most livable space of any tent in its category. Made with cutting-edge, ultra-durable fabrics and constructed with time-perfected production techniques, the Sunda is built to last.
The Sunda doesn’t stop as a ground dweller. Modeled after the Sunda Flying Lemur, this tent transforms and goes aerial, converting to a one-person, all-in-one hammock shelter. Elevate your overnight experience, give your back a break from the rocks, and let the gentle breeze rock you to sleep.
Using Sunda’s fly, poles and footprint to create an on-the-go sanctuary, Fly Light™ mode acts as an ultra-light shelter to save pack weight in circumstances not requiring insect protection. Fly Light™ mode opens new opportunities for use as a pool-side beach shade, park picnic shelter, festival VIP hangout, and more.
Kick your feet up on minimalist adventures and bring your afternoon read into the trees -- and even let two companions share your Sunda’s Fly Light™ ultralight shelter. In hammock only mode, you can have the mesh hang underneath for easy ‘lounge mode’ access, or you can engage the ridgeline and attached the no-see-um mesh above you for ‘jungle mode’.
You no longer have to limit your outdoor experience to a single landscape, the Sunda is your true anywhere, any occasion, anytime shelter.
With room for 2 plus all your gear / or dogs / or kids / the Sunda™ offers 35 sf of vast interior living space. Sunda’s peak height at 40” provides ample headroom, but what is truly jaw-dropping: Sunda’s peak height extends the full 8ft length of the tent! Most tents boast about sit-up height, but their high point is usually isolated within a few square feet before walls start sloping down. Sunda’s maximized sit-up height is achieved by its flat ridge pole and attached brow pole.
Two large vestibules and crawl through doors eliminate the ‘rock-paper-scissors’ scramble for best gear storage or sleep spot. You and your companion will each benefit from an additional 6.25 square feet (12.5 square feet total) of dry storage space for gear, and easy access to both tent doors. Or, in a light rain, kick off your shoes and keep the vestibule doors rolled up to enjoy the view.
Light Enhancing: A little light goes a long way with Lumos™ light enhancing fabric. Our goal in creating Lumos was to amplify the performance of a single headlamp or lantern, creating a beautiful glow and eliminating darker spots in your tent.
Heat Reflecting: Traditional tent fabric provides little protection against infrared (IR) and visible light (VL) rays from the sun. IR rays pass through fabric and become trapped in the tent, making the inside of your tent a solar heated sauna. Lumos significantly reflects and blocks both IR and VL rays from the sun and provides a cooler tent interior. If sleeping-in is your jam, if you don’t prefer your tent to double as a greenhouse, if you want to skip the sauna and choose a cooler option, Lumos buys you more comfort from the sun’s radiant heat.
2 ceiling mounted Lunarlight™ diffuser pockets + 1 Lumos™ fabric shell = sheer magic. Place your headlamp (or phone LED) in overhead pockets to create diffused, soft, even lighting throughout the tent. Lunarlight™ and Lumos™ technology truly illuminates your space for bedtime Narnia reading, tent talent shows, competitive card playing, or post-campfire storytelling.
With 48 square feet of dry covered space, 6 internal mesh pockets (2 Lunarlight™ pockets and 4 corner mesh pockets), and multiple add-on organization accessories options, the Sunda has storage for days...and days...and days. Pockets remain accessible in hammock mode, giving you arms-reach access to things like your cell phone, keys, headwear, or journal.
9 internal hanging loops provide plentiful options to hang lights or additional gear. Use our Media Caddy or our Gear Loft with the hanging loops to optimize Sunda’s organization and storage capacity.
Born out of equal parts love for quick attachment devices and a frustration with tying knots, our Minnow Clips are made from a strong pack hook and a line-lock cord adjuster, fit with pre-cut cord lengths that are color coded to specify each length. Simply use the pack hook to attach the Minnow Clip to the desired tent tie-out, and stake the cord-end to the ground. Minnow Clips are designed for ultimate adjustability, and can be easily moved to different tie-out points on the Sunda.
We designed Sunda for more than the average tent’s 7-days-per-year use. Most high quality tents prioritize cutting weight at all cost, and durability is often the first tradeoff. In the rugged outdoors, however, durability should be one of the highest priorities. We over-engineered the floor and fly fabrics by amplifying abrasion resistance and tear strength. Rest easy, knowing your gear is adventure-proof.
Our nylon taffeta floor has excellent abrasion resistance, tear strength, and durability. The fabric is coated for waterproofness with a non-hydrolyzing PU to 2,000mm of hydrostatic resistance. The exterior of the fabric is treated with a super-DWR to help shed water droplets and prevent wetting out the base fabric.
Lumos™ does much more than enhancing interior light and shielding from the sun’s visible light and infrared waves. Engineered to yield the perfect balance of tear strength, waterproofness, abrasion resistance, and weight, this 20D high tenacity PU-coated poly ripstop is one of the most advanced textiles available on the market.
Most high-end tents come without footprints, and you end up spending an additional $30-$60 to complete your set-up - womp womp! Sunda™ comes complete with an extra durable 70D Nylon Taffeta footprint. Sunda’s Footprint gives extra protection from gravel, roots, twigs, and dry rugged terrain. The Footprint also comes equipped with DAC Jake's Foot™ hooks, making the “Fly Light™” mode a snap to set up.
DAC is the gold standard when it comes to high performance tent poles and hardware components. And, they are just great people to work with! Sunda features some of the most cutting-edge technology from DAC. Sunda has three separate poles, a ridge pole and two arch poles, and all have internal shock cord to make setup lightning fast. Sunda’s pole structure maximizes volume to weight ratio by using strategic controlled bends, increasing your living space without any extra burden in the backcountry.
When it comes to tent waterproofing, the first rule is to construct a tent with as few seams as possible - especially on the floor. That is why we designed the Sunda ‘bathtub floor’ to be a solid sheet of fabric, only requiring seam taping where the corners extend upwards to the sidewalls.
Second rule of waterproofing: don’t skimp on seam tape! Seam tape can be one of the first points of tent failure - even on the best tents. That is why we use genuine Bemis® seam tape that is optimized for longevity and compatibility for our floor and fly fabrics. The thermoplastic film provides a uniform waterproof barrier when applied over stitching on the inside of the tent.
Zippers are one of the most intimate and memorable components of a tent. They are particularly memorable when they break or snag. We have chosen to use only the best YKK® Zippers, and constructed the zipper chain to create a pleasant snag-free experience. Zipper pulls are made from ultralight reflective cord to make finding them in the dark a breeze. The sound of the Sunda’s zippers will only recall great memories from your experience!
With its built-in Mini Kanga Claw carabiners and Dyneema cord in hammock mode, the Sunda could suspend a baby elephant above the ground. Our patented Mini Kanga Claws support 13kN of force, sufficient and highly durable for Sunda’s anchor points in hammock mode.
“The mark of a great tent: it fits back into the bag it came in.” - MOB Field Tester Sunda’s roll up stuff sack makes packing up an enjoyable task. Just fold (or stuff) the footprint, body, and fly. Then, simply roll, clip and you are on your way.
You went into nature to take in the beauty - not to stare at the inside of your tent fly. We strive for our products to connect you with the natural world, and we designed Sunda with this in mind.
Sunda features two fly and tent body windows that are accessible from inside the tent. You can unzip to see out, or zip up when the weather turns bad - all from the comfort of your sleeping bag.
The two crawl through doors (on opposite sides) create easy entry and exit points, providing individualized space when two are sharing the Sunda. The doors roll up and allow for unobstructed peripheral visibility out of the tent.
Nannoet™ is a new *no-see-um mesh that we chosen specifically for the Sunda. Constructed with a 15D low-stretch and high-tenacity filament, we used an optimized knit pattern to reduce weight and increase airflow. The result is better breathability, while still keeping the insects out.
No-see-ums: or biting midges are winged insects from the which includes over 4,000 species. They are tiny gnat-like insects (only 1-3 mm long) and, like black flies, inflict painful bites.
Another great benefit of our ultralight no-see-um construction is the enhanced visibility out of the mesh. The sidewall mesh is lighter in color for great visibility in direct sun, while the Sunda’s StarGazer™ ceiling is made with darker color Nannoet to provide the best contrast when gazing at the night sky. The StarGazer™ ceiling also works during the day to cut down glare from direct sun exposure.
Sunda’s Katabatic Venting™ system is powered by roll-down windows, dual zip vestibule doors, and large catenary curves along the fly. Katabatic Venting ensures maximum cross-ventilation opportunities for cooler breezes to pass through the tent, or warm humid air to dissipate prior to turning to condensation.
In the event that the rain fly develops condensation, Sunda’s body ‘splash guard’ fabric ensures that your sleeping bag will stay dry. Splash guard fabric is ultra breathable and is treated with a nano DWR coating on the exterior to make sure water is repelled from inside the tent.
Fun Fact: The Sunda gets it’s name from the incredibly adaptable Sunda flying lemur, also know as the Malayan flying lemur. These arboreal gliding mammals are members of the Colugo species found in Southeast Asia, known for their ability to leap between trees using the flaps of skin between their legs to glide from higher to lower locations. We designed our Sunda to replicate the intelligent design of the Sunda flying lemur when outstretched and gliding between trees, recognizing the finesse this animal achieves between it’s tree-dwelling adaptations and ability to take flight.
Once unlocked, backers will be able to add these products on through BackerKit at the end of the campaign. Add-Ons will come at an exclusive Kickstarter discount. The more money we raise, the more accessory products we will be able to bring into production with Sunda.
From the beginning, we have had a vision of creating a ‘next level’ outdoor adventure experience, seamlessly integrating outdoor gear essentials into one cohesive system. We started with camping hammocks, moved into sleeping bags, and now...tents!
Over the past few years, we’ve engaged many a conversation with our customers and held several design workshops with our community in Austin to uncover the formula for a game-changing tent. Then, as the lovers of hammocks that we are, we asked ourselves “why do tents need to remain on the ground?” There are many occasions (think rocky ridgeline, ecologically sensitive topography, sore backs) when sleeping above ground is more fitting, comfortable, and convenient, so why not design a tent that could do it all? But ‘do it all’ comes with the great design challenge of “what to comprise?” Our answer… nothing!
We took on the challenge of designing the best 2+ person tent AND the best ‘all-in-one’ style hammock shelter / compromising nothing in this pursuit…
After years of development and dozens of prototypes (and lots of heated internal debates!), we’re proud to introduce Sunda™: the world’s first 2+ person tent and all-in-one hammock.

Risks and challenges
We’ve been around this Kick-starting block a few times before, and we’ve learned lessons (sometimes painful ones!) at each go-round that have prepared us to launch what we are positive will be our most successful Kickstarter campaign ever. We’ve worked fervently to cross every ’t’ and dot every ‘i’ in preparation of this launch, and though we are completely confident in our ability to deliver to you what we’ve promised, we have also learned that you can’t prepare for every curve ball. We’ve anticipated plot twists, shipping company bankruptcies (recent happening...), and everything in between that could potentially come about - but we can’t see the future with absolute clarity and realize there will likely be bumps in the road to come our way.
You, our backers, can be confident in our commitment to be transparent and clear in our communication at every step along the way. We will do what we have said we are going to do, and if an unforeseeable issue arises, you'll be the first to know.
In the event that we are wildly successful: you might experience a slight delay in product while we fly to our manufacturer and aid in the creation of billions of Sundas. If such an event occurs, we will communicate on timeline for production as soon as humanly possible.
We are committed to honesty, transparency, and working with you every step of the way. As always, your feedback and input is welcome. This is, after all, possible because of you! Thank you for joining us on this life changing adventure!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The Sunda sleeps 2 people plus thier gear comfortably when setup as a tent. Once it is setup in hammock mode, it's better suited for one person.
The Sunda is both fully tent and fully hammock - up to you as to how your adventures take shape!
The Sunda is the exact same hammock dimensions as our Wallaby hammock. Our Roo hammock measures 5'7" x 10', and the Sunda/Wallaby measure 4'2" x 8'4". The Sunda hammock also has a built in bug protection (tent wall) when the hammock is used in "jungle mode". You can also tuck the netting up under hammock body to use it in "lounge mode". The material is also different. Our Wallaby is made with a 40D diamond ripstop nylon; the Sunda uses a nylon fabric. This means that the Sunda hammock is slightly less breathable, but the best material for both the tent and hammock modes.
As of now, the Sunda will not be available at Retail. If it does become available to retailers, Kammok will ensure that Kickstarter backers get their Sunda first.
See our setup instruction in the campaign. The Sunda is designed to be a tent, a hammock and a minimum shelter. Each mode has its own specific setup instructions.

We will be providing instructions for how to update and input information, and will come as an update before the end of the campaign.
In tent mode, the Suda is primarily a three season backpacking tent. The Sunda has more space and volume than the superlight backpacking tents. As a three season tent, the Sunda does well in high to lower temperatures. The body is all-mesh construction, so it is designed more for optimal airflow rather than retention of warm air inside the tent. It is not designed for multi-day use in snowy conditions.
Although we attach temperature ratings to our sleeping bags and quilts, we do not have temperature rating for the Sunda. This is standard for all tent manufacturers since warmth ratings can only be attached to insulated products designed to trap warm air pockets. As a general guideline, you should depend on your sleep system to maintain your temperature and your tent to keep you dry. The Sunda features optimized venting for increased air flow in warmer climates. For colder temperatures, the fly can be ‘battened down’ and completely closed.
