Hello Kickstarter and backers. We are Machang Optics with central focus on providing cost-effective large aperture lenses with high quality for every shutterbug and letting everyone enjoy the fantasy of large aperture lenses. It has always been our mission and main goal. With the success of the 50mm F1.1 and our first Kickstarter campaign of 28mm F1.4, we’ve received a lot of feedback from backers and customers, especially the 50mm F1.1, a controversial lens with both compliment and criticism. We cherish them all and turn them to the power that drives us to move forward.
- All below images were shot with our Kamlan 50mm F1.1 MK2 APS-C Lens unless otherwise mentioned.
Large aperture lenses are valued because they provide a new horizon to modern photography. They expand your possibility when shooting in the low light situation, isolate your subject from the background and make your images very engaging and fascinating. What if we combine in one a prime lens a fast aperture, an excellent bokeh, a high contrast and sharpness while keeping the weight and price reasonable? It is a great challenge, but we made it. Introducing our new bokeh beast: Kamlan 50mm F1.1 MK2.
Firstly, let's see what impression KamLan 50mm F1.1 MK2 lens gives to Dani, a commercial photographer:
As portrait photographers ourselves, we usually face the problem of not being able to get both great sharpness and creamy bokeh. To be honest, it’s really hard to achieve a good balance between them. The “Kamlan 50mm F1.1 MK2 APS-C lens” has a super large, bright f/1.1 aperture with 11 circular aperture iris that allows for a safe shutter speed in extreme low light conditions and also the ability to create beautifully creamy backgrounds. Brand new optical design ensures great sharpness from wide open to stop down.
One of the key strengths of the Kamland 50mm f/1.1 MK2 is its high degree of color accuracy and richness. Unlike some normal large aperture lenses, it does not introduce too much color cast to images but delivers a neutral, accurate color rendition even wide open. You can easily create a great 3D effect and great sense of atmosphere for your images.
- Sharp at All Distance Range
Balance is the main design concept of the Kamlan 50mm F1.1 MK2. Unlike most large aperture lenses with spherical aberration when shooting at close distance, Kamlan 50mm F1.1 MK2 features with dual high index of refraction element groups. It can calibrate the spherical aberration effectively. As a result, your images will be sharp from shortest distance to infinity.
Further extending the flexibility of the lens is the ability to focus down to just 0.4m (1.3ft), allowing you to fill the frame with your subject and throw the background dramatically out of focus.
- Rendering Softly Bokeh
Want perfect rounded bokeh ball? Just 11 aperture blades are not enough. Kamlan 50mm F1.1 MK2 features a larger diameter element with high index of refraction glass to help eliminate the onion rings. The whole defocus area is smooth and creamy.
In real world shooting, Kamlan 50mm F1.1 MK2 shows similar bokeh effect like two Canon F1.2 Lenses.
A test of bokeh performance from Marc Alhadeff:
- Zero Distortion
With benefits of the new optical structure, Kamlan 50mm F1.1 MK2 has barely visible distortion and well-controlled field curvature.
Manual focus with F1.1 is not an easy job but with great focus ring design. Kamlan 50mm F1.1 MK2 sports an all metal and glass design like previous Kamlan lenses. The manual aperture ring is declicked, allowing videographers to make smooth aperture changes while retaining traditional aperture stop for stills photographers. The manual focus ring is incredibly smooth and perfectly damped, allowing for smooth and accurate focus results across the 180 degrees of focus travel.
We have designed a new premium metallic lens hood for the New Kamlan 50mm F1.1 MK2, which employs a threaded connection for a firm, easy to use the connection. The lens hood has built-in filter threads to allow for the use of filters even with the hood attached and can be installed reversely.
Notice: The size of built-in filter threads of the lens hood is 72mm, the filter size of the lens itself is 62mm. You can choose your own preferred size.
The Kamlan 50mm f/1.1 MK2 lens is compatible with all APS-C and M4/3 mirrorless body.
*35mm full frame equivalent focal length on Sony E and Fuji X mounts is 75mm. On Canon M the 35mm equivalent focal length is 80mm, while on M43, it is 100mm.

Risks and challenges
Machang Optics is composed of a very strong and experienced team of manufacturing, optical design and business professionals. We are already very far along in the development process and are looking for help from the Kickstarter community to expedite the launch of the Kamlan 50mm F1.1 MK2 APS-C Lens.
All necessary tests on the prototypes are finished and the results are very encouraging. We are currently working day and night to prepare the lens for mass production.
We have carefully evaluated and calculated all foreseeable risks and challenges and come up with the most conservative delivery schedule. However, there is still a slim possibility that uncontrollable factors and challenges leading to delays in shipment. We promise to devote our greatest effort to having your rewards delivered at the earliest.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
