Once upon a time a young lady set off to Kyiv with a suitcase full of dreams. She and four other women got together and wrote about the lives of Ukrainian women … about flying to England with a birthday cake … about carrying a white rat on a bus … So, you think you know what women are all about … think again … these stories tell you all about Ukrainian women and women everywhere; what they think and dream about, and how they are really the ones in charge. This book is aimed at young women and teenage girls but can be enjoyed by anyone. The 25 stories, at a little over one hundred pages can be read in an afternoon. But you will keep returning to them. One tale tells of a homeless man finding happiness and an umbrella... another of a romantic date between which involves Freddy Krueger. As one reviewer said "no one has ever published such a collection of humorous girls' stories"

The work was originally published in Ukrainian. Kalyna Language Press will help them tell their tales in English. We believe that Ukraine will become part of Europe when the voice of its young people is heard. KLP want to make that happen. Our PEN Award winning press has featured in Index on Censorship, The Guardian, The Economist and the Glasgow Review of Books. We can help these voices be heard.

Ukrainians laid down their lives for the right to be European. They barricaded their capital city with burning tyres and ran towards gunfire while carrying only wooden shields. They only wanted one thing, to be able to have a normal life. This book cuts through all the propaganda and news footage ...  Yes, Ukraine is being invaded, but its people mostly try to live their lives like those of other Europeans ... they relax with a cappuccino, trip up while they are running for the train, they can't find their socks in the morning ... They do all this while wearing a smile on their faces ...  Help us deliver this much needed dose of happiness to the west.

Maryna absolutely adores working with figures and solving accountancy problems and could happily do so until doomsday. She’s a fan of snickers, torn jeans and high heels, but these shoes are piled up in her wardrobe and she never wears them. She says: “This book is about little moments. It’s for those who love lying on the grass and watching the white clouds play against the deep blue sky; for those who walk in the rain and turn off aside to feed a sausage to a big homeless dog."

Myroslava is the co-founder of Karalevna Website a project about girls and for girls. She is a little bit of a writer, a little bit of a fairy-tale teller, a mother to her little boy Nazarchik, a loving wife and a chocolate-lover. She says “people think girls only talk about fashion, cosmetics, discuss TV series and gossip about each other. Well, maybe I am just happy to have girlfriends who I can talk to about everything on Earth!"

Violina is a writer, a journalist a passionate book-lover, a patriot and a coffee addict. She says “our book was written during extremely difficult times, but does not contain a single word about what worries everyone in our country. The reason is simple, we wanted to distract people a little bit – from all that fear, despair, anger, panic and helplessness that we have been living in for quite some time now."

Olenka is a dreamer who finds happiness in little moments: pleasant talk, rain drops on flowers, a sip of green tea, a nice bouquet of flowers, sunny smiles and tender embraces. She often loses her umbrellas inadvertently helping other people not to get rain drenched. She says “we never change our closest and dearest friends – wherever we go, we know that our next meeting is just around the corner. Our book is for every girl and her best friend.”

Slava is an optimist who loves experimenting with the Ukrainian language  and  is terrified of bumble-bees and turkeys. She can’t stand orange peel and sitting in one place for a long time and says  “our book is for book-lovers! We did our best and tried to make it not only interesting and funny, but also beautiful. There is a bonus: it’s got pictures in it! If you’re having a hectic day, stop, catch your breath, take a break, have a sip of coffee and read... smiles and books should be shared.”

Risks and challenges

The main risk we face is promoting the book and making sure the stories of these women reach an English language audience. However, we now have a great deal of experience in publicising books. We are confident that by working with our network of colleagues, friends and supporters we will be able us to overcome any challenges.
