I'm Thomas Everett Haynes, Kale the Quick online, and I’m, the creator of Aegis Online. Aegis Online is a powerful, 3D, virtual tabletop for playing tabletop games of all types, from small scale RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons, to large scale wargaming. I put in all the basic features you need for tabletop gaming. While it’s true that some very well designed online tabletops already exist, Aegis Online gives you the power to play your games as you would on an actual tabletop, with everything from 3d terrain to miniatures that dynamically represent your character.
A lot of the core development has been done, but I have a lot more to do. By pledging to support Aegis Online you not only give me the time and resources to make it good, you join the community that will let me make it great. Nothing amazing is made without creative feedback, and your feedback will make Aegis Online the best it can be.
If you are interested in seeing more, I will be streaming on twitch to chat with players, answer questions, and show off Aegis Online on May 5th, 12th, 19th, and June 2nd. Ill announce the times for those on my twitter @kalethequick. I will also be at PaizoCon, which is May 25th - 28th. So if you are in the area, I can answer your questions there as well.
Online – Connect with your friends around the world and play with them.
Maps – Create a map and save it for later. Use a measuring tape to make sure everything is sized correctly, and even change the scale so you can have a map set up as an overworld map. Then, load the map when you are ready to play it.
Wisp Cursor – Sitting around a physical table allows you to effortlessly communicate by pointing at things. This is recreated in Aegis Online with the glowing wisp cursor. Each player has a cursor they can recolor to suit their preference. All the other players can see the wisp, letting you point and gesture naturally. A simple snapping feature allows you to keep the cursor on the grid, for moving miniatures or placing walls.
Miniatures – Place and move customizable items on the map to represent terrain, scenery, items, and characters. A custom graphics shader lets you recolor items to make your monsters and props unique. A built in stat feature lets you keep track of individual characteristics like HP, movement speed, or armor class.
Persistent Miniatures – Set up a miniature for your character once, then it’s saved forever, even between maps. It's stats are attached to the miniature, so you can move between encounters easily.
Initiative – Almost every tabletop game needs a turn order, so I turned the “connected player” list into a drag and drop reorderable turn tracker. The order synchronizes across the internet, and if you are playing offline or need more entries for NPCs, you can easily add them, with custom names and colors too!
Walls – Every dungeon needs walls. The built in wall tool lets you draw 3d walls as easily as a pen stroke. You can customize what the walls look like by changing textures, and even make them curve. They aren't stuck to a square grid.
Sub-Grids – Instead of a single grid for all the action, you can create independent sub grids. You can put walls or miniatures on them and they all move as one unit, allowing you to create that perfect tavern. Then, just pick it up and move it aside when you’re done with it. Or, maybe you want to set up entire ships for a space or nautical game. This feature lets you move the players AND the ships!
Sound – Play your own custom sound effects or music. Both .ogg and .wav audio formats are supported.
Scripting – Using a python scripting engine, you can apply scripts to your miniatures and automate their more frequently used actions; things like attacks, healing, movement, and more.
Aegis Online works! I have been playing games with my friends to test it for some time. But, there are a lot more features I want to get in before it is finished.
The following features don’t exist yet, but it is my intent to make them part of the final release:
Online Matchmaking – Just open up the games online, find your friends, and click join. That's how easy it needs to be. Nobody wants to roll up a one shot when it takes hours just to connect to your friends.
Automatic Mod Synchronization – Just join a friend’s game, and everyone's custom content is sent to everyone else. Nobody wants to delve into their hard drive and find all their files, compile them, and send them to the other players, who may not know what to do with them. Making this automatic is very important to making Aegis Online simple and functional. A lot of the mechanisms required have been put into place, they just need the time and care to ensure it works every time.
Customizable UI – Getting a simple and expandable system into place to allow for interactive character sheets, ability panels, NPC dialog, or the ability to right click and open a in game book to read, is the keystone to make Aegis Online the best it can be. A system using HTML and CSS is in the pipeline, which will make it functional and styled to match your game, all while using tools and skills that can be used elsewhere.
Every little bit helps make Aegis Online better and better. For a single dollar you will have the option of using a custom animated GIF as your player icon once Aegis Online is released. Just a little badge to let everyone know you helped make this all possible.
With this you form a mighty linc in our chain. Nothing is possible without the support of great people like you, Of course you have my undying gratitude, but on top of that you will have the animated icon from the previous tier, and beta access to the game. Once it gets a bit more polished and exits the alpha phase you will have the opportunity to test the versions that lead up to the final release.
You want to use Aegis Online right now? Well you are in luck. Because Aegis Online is technically functional! Join the Alpha Crew testers and get access to Aegis Online in it's current state, and join the discord server and facebook group where we will discuss problems and ideas of design!
It takes a lot to breathe life into a campaign, good GM, good players, and I can help out too! At this tier you will get your own package of simple custom 3d models for you to use with Aegis. There are various stipulations and limitations. I am no world tier artist, so we will speak directly to see what I can make for you!
$75,000 total – Single Player RPG example:
It’s very important that Aegis Online and its automation tools are powerful. And, as an example, I will make a functional single player RPG using the mod tools in Aegis Online. This quick and simple RPG will include character creation, combat, leveling up, NPC dialog, and items. Everything in this example will be open for you to mod and make your own adventure to be had with your friends.
$85,000 total – Fantasy Dungeon Adventure:
RPG MASTER CREATION OVERLORD, Darrin Drader, will create a complete fantasy RPG module for classic tabletop games like Dungeons and Dragons. This will be a complete adventure that could be ported to dead tree format if we so choose, and will Include maps, NPCs, and more.
$90,000 total – Animated Monster Menagerie:
Cool looking monster miniatures are one thing, but cool looking monsters that MOVE? Whole new level! With this stretch goal, a library of classic fantasy and sci fi monsters will be created and packaged with Aegis Online. Using a simple “poly art” style to keep the game running smooth, each creature will work with the tinting system for easy recoloring, and come with at least an idle, walk, attack, and death animation.
$100,000 total – Virtual Reality:
Stand over your beautiful map and world like a merciless god, or shrink down to see what your map would look like if you just stand in it. Virtual Reality is a wonderful technology, and I have worked with it before, and I’m certain I can make Aegis Online work with the systems on the market today. But, the technology isn’t yet standardized, so the hardware to run VR, the headsets themselves, and the time to make sure it's simple, is definitely above and beyond the scope of this project right now. But, if you fund it, I'll make it happen.
Risks and challenges
There are always a few risks when putting together a large project. All of the early hurdles are done and over with. I have done a large portion of the development on my own. But a few key features stand in the way.
Making it Simpler - I am a programmer, and programmers are notorious for making bad interfaces. Your help and feedback will overcome this by letting me iterate on the user interface until is simple enough for my grandmother to use. I don't want to make something so complex it excludes people, the entire point is to empower everyone to game!
Online Matchmaking - Finding and connecting to a game is always troublesome. I want to make it as easy as possible with an online matchmaker. Making finding your friends as easy as typing in a search and clicking 'connect.' Right now you need to connect with a direct IP connection, and as far as I am concerned that is too complex for this program. With your help ill be able to get a proper matchmaking server working, and make the system robust enough to handle all those big and fancy miniatures you modded in.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
