About

Introduction

This Kickstarter campaign aims to expand Albedo - a space-themed  deckbuilding game that successfully debuted at UK Games Expo 2018 in its  second edition and was loved by the audience.

This expansion  features Albedo's innovations like space ship cards that can be rotated  to retrofit them. Albedo's simultaneous action selection results in minimum  downtime and a uniform game length. In addition the expansion includes new planet cards, a new type of cards, and a new faction. Because the base game is needed in order  to use the expansion, the Kickstarter campaign also offers the Albedo  game in the reward levels.

48 Hour Bonus!

If the campaign is fully funded within the first 48 hours (Thursday the 6th of June 2019), 10 more cards are added to the expansion, increasing it from 90 to 100 cards. The extra cards are so called "exploration" cards (see the Exploration! section below).

What is special about Albedo?

A) the game always takes 35-45 minutes irrespective of player count  (2-4 with one box, 2-8 with two boxes) due to simultaneous action  selection.

B) most cards can be rotated 180° and retrofitted from space- to ground combat, making each card a decision in itself.

C) there is an additional decision layer during the planet resolution stage: if you lose the space combat, you may not get to choose your preferred target and have to decide which of the remaining locations to take and how to allocate your ground combat points.

D) you draw 6 cards in the deck builder fashion, but only have 9  cards in total, so that the initial rounds don't feel as "samey" as in  other deckbuilders. It also speeds up the game, because newly acquired cards are available from round 2 onward, whereas in typical deck builders, they would be available as of round 3.

E) in most games you become more powerful and therefore score more  points; in Albedo you always have to weigh whether to become more  powerful OR whether to score points. This is a kind of self balancing system, because when you score points early on you do not improve your deck and therefore enabling other players, who did improve their decks, to score points later on.

F) despite the nature of a "space combat" game with high interaction  between the players on the surface, the combat itself is non-destructive  (the winner of the space combat simply gets to choose better rewards),  adhering to the modern "no take that" design principle.

G) the game is beginner friendly due to the cards only consisting of two values (space combat and ground combat). There is no need to read through a market of cards with unique abilities and to assess how these abilities would combine and how valuable they are, which is a very difficult task for new players.

H) made in Europe. The designer and most of the artists are from Europe and the game is printed by Fabryka Kart, which is a European brand dedicated to the production of custom games and cards.

I) the game itself is language independent, since it only uses symbols and numbers. However, the Yggdrasil expansion introduces cards that contain text and are therefore not language independent.

What is inside the Box?

The expansion consists of 90 cards: the new faction takes up 56 of those cards. There are also 9 new planets and 15 "secret" cards (see explanation below). That leaves 10 cards, which could be used to add additional copies of units from the base game or possibly additonal planets. Since part of the fun of Kickstarter campaigns is the ability to shape products as they are being created, I decided to label the remaining 10 cards "exploration" cards - each week there is going to be a poll for backers to decide what cards should be added to the expansion to fill out the "exploration" cards.

Secret Cards

As a new catch up mechanism, whoever has the least amount of victory points at the end of rounds 2-6 is dealt a secret card. If players are tied for the lowest victory point total, then each of the tieing players receives a secret card.

There are 5 different secrets, which are duplicated twice for a total of 15 cards. Each secret is worth 1 victory point. Instead of taking a victory point a secret can be played for its card effect. Here is a selection of three of the five cards. However, their layout and wording might change slightly.

Exploration!

Each week there is going to be a poll for backers to decide what cards should be added to the expansion by swapping them with the place holder "exploration" cards. The deadline for the poll is always on Saturday at 11:59 p.m. CET.

The current exploration runs from tuesday the 4th of June 2019 until saturday the 8th of June 2019 11:59 p.m. CET. Backers can participate by sending a Kickstarter message with their preferred option.

___

Our forces have found two abandoned bases on a remote planet. There is only time to secure one of the locations, before the enemy fleet arrives. Should we A) head to the space port and turn 5 exploration cards into 5 Heavy Fighter cards or should we B) explore a research facility and turn 5 exploration cards into 5 secret cards (the same 5 secrets mentioned in the "Secret Cards" section are duplicated a third time).

Send your vote via a Kickstarter message until the deadline on the 8th of June.

How to Play

Here are a few how to play videos about the base game. The expansion adds a new playing style for the new faction, but the core mechanisms remain the same.

Sean and Ronan from the Gamepit podcast produced one of their Pit Stop videos to concisely explain how Albedo works:

Toucan Play that Game also produced a How to Play video about Albedo:

Testimonials / Reviews

Praise for the Albedo base game and the Albedo Space Pirates! expansion:

Fellow game designer Robert Seater, who triggered the idea for the Yggdrasil alien species with his forum question "Can I play as a fungal or plant-like alien race?", has this to say about Albedo and its first expansion on BoardGameGeek:

Here is a blurb (click the image to see their review) by Fiona and Amy from the Game Shelf about the Albedo base game:

The Cardboard Cultist made a timelapse video about Albedo:

Herbert and Philipp of the "Nerds-gegen-Stephan.de... caught in play, der nerdige Trashtalk" podcast talked about Albedo in one of their earlier episodes (in German).

Holger Christiansen of the Teilzeithelden also reviewed the Albedo base game. You can read the full review here (in German).

Lee from GeekCityUsa.com  posted a video "how to play" and review of Albedo. He only had the  first edition available, but apart from cosmetics the first and second  edition are functionally the same:

Stretch Goals

Stretch goals will be announced once the campaign meets its funding goal.

Shipping

As with all Kickstarter campaigns that have physical rewards, one of  the highest costs is shipping, which is about €9,- for most countries.

In  order to reduce the cost for backers, I am going to subsidize the  shipping cost and cover a portion of the shipping cost myself. The other portion is factored into the reward tiers, so that no additional shipping is charged.

Since the game is produced in Europe, distribution within the European Union is not going to incur additional duties.

Please be aware that there might be duties in your country (USA, Canada, Australia, etc.) if you are not residing within the European Union.

The EU-friendly shipping image was downloaded (with implicit permission as per their blog post) from Stonemaier Games.

Risks and challenges

With the experience of previous Kickstarter campaigns and two completed board games ("Das Katastrophenspiel" and "Albedo") I do not expect any unsolvable difficulties. However, if any unforeseen challenges do arise, I am going to notify the backers immediately.

The first edition of the base game already sold out at SPIEL 2017 and the reprint was sold at UK Games Expo 2018. The expansion is already finished and playtested, but has not been printed yet. Therefore the risk of not finishing the project is significantly reduced and only pertains to the fabrication side.
