This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Sun, July 29 2018 7:13 AM UTC +00:00.
This Kickstarter campaign aims to expand Albedo - a space-themed deckbuilding game that successfully debuted at UK Games Expo 2018 in its second edition and was loved by the audience.
This expansion features Albedo's innovations like space ship cards that can be rotated to retrofit them and simultaneous action selection resulting in minimum downtime and a uniform game length. In addition the expansion includes new planet cards and a new faction and introduces new mechanisms like the planetary fighter garrison. Because the base game is needed in order to use the expansion, the Kickstarter campaign also offers the Albedo game in the reward levels.
How to Play
Sean and Ronan from the Gamepit podcast produced one of their Pit Stop videos to concisely explain how Albedo works:
Lee from GeekCityUsa.com posted a video "how to play" and review of Albedo. He only had the first edition available, but apart from cosmetics the first and second edition are functionally the same:
Steve, the cardboard cultist, just uploaded his time lapse video of Albedo:
Selwyn Ward of Board's Eye View posted a description of Albedo along with one of his impressive 360° images. The photo was taken at UK Games Expo and you can scroll around and look at the booth and the game. There is a Facebook version and the one on his website.
Herbert and Philipp of the "Nerds-gegen-Stephan.de... caught in play, der nerdige Trashtalk" podcast talked about Albedo in their latest episode (in German).
Phil from Small Robot came by at the UK Games Expo and interviewed me about the second edition of Albedo:
Here are a few videos from the limited first edition of the game:
If you represent a retailer, please back at the €1,- reward level and get in touch directly to discuss conditions.
Albedo Base Game
The base game contains 110 cards:
80 unit cards, 18 planet cards, and 12 navigation cards.
Albedo Space Pirates! Expansion
The expansion introduces a new faction, new planets, and new mechanisms to the game. It contains 45 cards:
30 unit cards, 9 planet cards, and 6 navigation cards.
The space pirates faction is a side grade, providing an exciting new and different starting hand of cards for a player.
They have a few strong units at their disposal, for example the depicted Pirate Cruiser: This strong unit is escorted by a fleet of smaller fighter units shown on the right.
If the base level funding goal is exceeded, additional cards, special player mats, and promo items are added for free as stretch goals to the reward tiers that contain the expansion.
Promo items may appear at different occasions (for example at a trade show), but Kickstarter backers have early access to these promotional items.
Once a stretch goal is reached, the next stretch goal is going to be revealed.
As with all Kickstarter campaigns that have physical rewards, one of the highest costs is shipping, which is about €9,- for most countries.
In order to reduce the cost for backers, I am going to subsidize the shipping cost and cover a portion of the shipping cost myself.
Therefore, there is a flat shipping cost fee of €4,- for everyone instead of different shipping costs for different regions.
Since the game is produced in Europe, distribution within Europe is not going to incur additional duties.
The EU-friendly shipping image was downloaded (with implicit permission as per their blog post) from Stonemaier Games.
Risks and challenges
With the experience of previous Kickstarter campaigns and two completed board games ("Das Katastrophenspiel" and the "Albedo" limited edition) I do not expect any unsolvable difficulties. However, if any unforeseen challenges do arise I will notify the backers immediately.
The first edition of the base game already sold out at SPIEL 2017 and the reprint was sold at UK Games Expo 2018. The expansion is already finished and playtested, but has not been printed yet. Therefore the risk of not finishing the project is significantly reduced and only pertains to the fabrication side.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
