I wrote a book! Now what? Well, it needs a better cover, which is why I hired an artist. However, I could use some help with that.

What is this Kickstarter campaign about?
I wrote a medieval fantasy novel in the spirit of the old Dragonlance books by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. At the moment I'm putting in the changes that were suggested by the professional copy editor that I hired. Once that is done, all that is missing before the release in July (2015) is a cover and ebook formatting. With this campaign I'm trying to raise money for a new cover, which will be created by professional artist Zelda Devon (you can see her work at ZeldaDevon.com). My original estimation was that a cover would cost something around €500, but in reality the price is typically above $1000 (for reference, see this blog post by Rachel Aaron on the cost of a professional quality book).
Why should I support this project?
Apart from making me very happy, there is also the €3 reward tier, which might even ship before the actual release date of the book and is lower than the retail price of €4 that I'm aiming for. Readers of fantasy will get a slightly discounted book, while also supporting me. It's a win-win situation :)
What happens if you exceed your goal?
Any excess will be used for the following: paying the artist a bit more, setting aside money for cover art and professional editing of the next novel, fulfilling stretch goals (tba).
What is the book about?
The book currently has 81000 words, which corresponds to roughly 344 pages. Here is the novel's blurb:
The future seems certain, devoid of promise. Ferro Torridan believes that his career as a knight has reached an impasse with his latest assignment at Mountain Watch garrison. All that changes when demons from an age gone by raze the outpost, killing most of his fellow knights. With the aid of his fiancé Leena and the other survivor, Knight Jarina Dagon, Ferro embarks on a journey to find out what prompted the attack.
There's little respite for Ferro, as his survival puts him on the wanted list of a mysterious wizard, of the interim ruler of his homeland and of the queen of a neighboring state.
All of these power players want him for different reasons and suddenly he finds that clearing his name of the accusation of being in league with the demons is the least of his worries: the events set in motion at Mountain Watch threaten to tear the world asunder. Ferro Torridan must face his fears if he is to save the world. But what is the mark of a true hero?
Is there an excerpt of the novel?
Yes! The first chapter is available as a video right now and throughout the campaign I plan to upload more videos of me reading chapters of the book. The schedule is as follows:
Chapter 2: On Saturday the 16th of May or once we hit 25% of the funding goal.
Chapter 3: On Saturday the 23rd of May or once we hit 50% of the funding goal.
Chapter 4: Once we hit 75% of the funding goal.
Chapter 5: Once we hit 100% of the funding goal.
Update 23rd of May 2015:
all the time unlocked chapters are on the campaign page now. Two more chapters will be unlocked, once we reach certain funding milestones.
In addition to that, I received a request by forum poster Jmack to provide a readable excerpt as well, so here are chapters 1-3 in PDF format: Age of Torridan (pre copy edit) chapters 1-3.
All the best,
Update 28th of May 2015:
the artist, Zelda Devon, sent me the sketches for the Age of Torridan (needs a new cover) kickstarter campaign. The final version will look as beautiful as the other images on her website. The purpose for the sketches is to evaluate the arrangement and decide, which composition is the best. That said, I still think they look absolutely gorgeous! Since the third version is similar to the first, I'll show you sketch A and sketch B - help me decide which one is best!
Pursue your dreams and see you next time,
Risks and challenges
Originally I wanted to start a kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the next - currently unwritten - novel.
However, that would have contained many risks and challenges. Therefore I decided instead to campaign for the finishing touches of my almost completed work in progress: I already wrote the novel and the copy edit is well under way. I could release the book right now, which means that the backer rewards could be fulfilled even now. As such, there is no risk regarding the campaign itself or the rewards.
