About

Who We Are

K-Stand is the 'dream' child of CKdream, the company formed by us, Carol and Keith Kimura. The idea for CKdream came to us shortly after we married 13 years ago. At the time we had no idea what our business would be but we had a vision, “a dream,” that someday we would have our own company and it would be called “CKdream” (using the initials of our first names and sounding like “seek a dream”).

Seeking Our Dream

So, fast forward to the present and here we are “seeking our dream,” with this new idea called K-Stand, a new kind of instrument stand that got its start as a Christmas gift. I (Keith) wanted to make a handmade gift for Carol and as I pondered what this gift would be I saw Carol practicing her ukulele and noticed that whenever she took a break from playing she would lay the instrument down - usually in her open case next to her or any other available flat surface (a chair, the floor, someone else’s lap).

That’s when the idea came to me – a portable instrument stand for her ukulele. However I wanted it to be easily transportable as well, something that would fit in her case so she needn’t carry it separately. The very first design idea was cut from a piece of paper then folded up to test the concept, when I saw that it could work I began building. In a couple of weeks I had it finished and I wrapped the present for Carol to open on Christmas day. Carol's reaction was priceless, it brought tears to her eyes. That became the beginning of the K-Stand (named for its ability to be carried in a case, i.e. “case stand”).

Over the next several months I would develop many more versions driven by my desire to make it more aesthetically attractive by making all the parts to fit together like a puzzle. I also wanted it to be mechanically creative without use of hardware like hinges and screws. But most of all, I wanted to make it simple to use. In July of 2018 we filed for a patent based on the design we now have.

Taking a Bold Stand - Part Two; The Root of Our Creativity

Where We Are Now

Since then we have received tremendous response and have been selling out faster than we can produce. Our marketing efforts have been through word-of-mouth, displaying at local music festivals and online. K-Stand is currently designed for ukuleles and acoustic guitars with several design options available for finish and wood type. We have also become popular for custom designs that have been requested by musicians who own very special instruments. The standard design is constructed from furniture grade birch plywood but customers may also customize their stand by choosing other wood types. It is evident that there is a huge market for K-Stand because of its convenience, functionality and its aesthetic appeal.

Being a wood product the majority of labor is done by hand using routers and sanders. In our best effort we have converted our garage into a makeshift workshop where we use these hand tools, small machines and a mid-sized CNC (computer-numerical control) machine that I purchased as a kit and built and learned how to use. But our limited resources just can't keep up with demand and customers are having to wait several months for a delivery…which is why we are turning to Kickstarter.

How Kickstarter Helps Us

We have decided to take the leap and with the help of this Kickstarter campaign we can secure a location to set up a dedicated workshop with adequate equipment and space that allows us to produce K-Stands more efficiently. Currently, because it takes several weeks to produce one stand, we are constantly playing catch up to meet ordering demands. A workshop will provide enough space to incorporate the necessary woodworking machines, tools and electrical power to efficiently accomplish the many operations necessary to build a K-Stand and allow us to build an inventory. Giving us the ability to ship orders within days instead of weeks or months which is our current timeline. One other contributor to such long production times is that we both work day jobs so we are only able to work on K-Stand orders on our days off - achieving the goal of this campaign will allow us to dedicate more time to producing K-Stands.

Our garage has very little storage space, inadequate electrical power, and little space for movement from one operation to the next. A new workshop will:

  • Have dedicated machines and tooling to be set-up and ready when needed as opposed to having to set-up and tear-down a single machine for each different operation due to space and budget limitations.
  • Accommodate a walk-in Spray Booth where many parts can be finished at one time.
  • Have adequate electrical power to run multiple machines simultaneously as opposed to the single circuit system in our garage which limits the use of machines (depending upon consumption) to only one or two at a time.
  • Storage space for supplies and wood to be available when needed. Because of the small space in our garage we cannot store much wood therefore we purchase small amounts as we need it.

We truly believe in this design and feel it can become one of the most popular instrument stands on the market. It's innovation to be portable and convenient along with its simplicity is like no other. Its handcrafted wood workmanship truly makes it 'functional art'. But the limitations of the resources we have are hindering our ability to meet current demand making us ill-prepared to meet the increase as popularity grows.

It's Just The Beginning

Our goal of $40,000 will achieve our short-term goal of supporting our business for the remainder of 2019 and help get K-Stand marketed to a wider audience. But, that's only the beginning. There are so many more untapped opportunities to utilize new materials such as plastic, metal, carbon fiber, and bamboo thus expanding our market immensely. The future of this design that we are so proud of is very bright and with your help we can achieve so much more.

Please join us in this amazing adventure that has come our way.

Risks and challenges

One of the challenges we have will be in the set up of our new workshop. There will be quite a bit of preparation required especially with bringing in new equipment. There will also be the learning curve even though we are familiar with the operation and process we will still need to learn new tool usage when we bring in new machines like a larger CNC. We will also need to address code and safety requirements like O.S.H.A. standards that could effect the timeliness of setting up our workshop.

    Take a Stand

One of our designs is named "Tsutomu" for Keith's father. The design was inspired by the shape of the "Maui Hook" (as seen in the movie Moana and depicted in Hawaiian folklore). The name was given as tribute to Keith's father who was born and raised in Maui, Hawaii. By contributing with a donation of $5,000 or more you will be given the opportunity to name one of our models (i.e. 10-inch Mahogany and Maple, 12-Inch all Maple, etc.) And that model will forever be referred to by the name you give; in our catalog, on our website, and even the SKU identifier. This is a great way to pay tribute or rememberance. You will also be permanently remembered by placing your name on our "Stand Out" page of our website.
