About this project
Lavender Magazine: "Behind every label is an individual much more complex... sure to resonate with audiences."
MPLS.TV: "tailor-made for the 2010s... particular cred as a movie worth making."
Two best friends make the best of going to high school by dreaming up high-fashion photo shoots, and bribing their siblings to model for them. Rene loves his fashion magazines and designing clothes. Frankie lives for her camera and punk rock. The drama they dream up in their fashion shoots becomes very real when they end up fighting over their classmate, Sasha.
Sasha is a shy soccer player with a soft spot for poems by Pushkin and a secret dream to ask Frankie to prom. Frankie accepts his invitation despite the fact that she’s already agreed to be her friend Rene’s date.
Death to Prom is a bizarre love triangle loaded with enough glamour and attitude for “Project Runway” & Vogue, but with enough heart to make Molly Ringwald bite her lip with anticipation.
We're asking you to join our prom committee today with a donation. Your involvement means we can independently shoot an inspiring, humorous, and honest feature film about being a teen, about being different, and about being in young anguished dramatic fabulous love. If you think of the films of John Hughes but from a gay perspective, you've got the right idea. This is a big fun project that we are crazy excited to bring to you!
These funds are only for production. That is, the shooting of the actual movie. Post-production will cost much much more, and we are addressing that, but we are ready to get the movie shot now. We need to pay our team of cast and crew, provide daily meals for our cast and crew, pay for locations and permits, create or acquire wardrobe and props (which we already have a lot of), make sure we have insurance, transportation, and sound, light and camera gear rentals (some of which we already have). Your support means all this is covered and we can focus on the story and filming!
Matt Stenerson and Jeremy Wilker are the producer/directors behind Death To Prom. Matt's script has been a finalist in both the McKnight and the Francis Ford Coppola Zoetrope screenwriting competitions and he just found out he is a McKnight finalist again this year. This year Matt was also a finalist for the Sundance screenwriter's lab. Jeremy's first feature film (also a successful kickstarter project), TRIUMPH67, won an honorable mention at MSPIFF 2011. He also shot a bunch for the award-winning Kartemquin documentary TYPEFACE.
Our post production team includes the brilliant professionals at Splice in Minneapolis (they cut our two-minute teaser for us), so you can rest assured this thing will look stellar.
We are also fiscally-sponsored by IFP MN if you want to get involved more traditionally, just let us know!
Join the prom committee today with a donation at any level. We also will be your dream-prom dates (ie: love you forever) if you help spread the word through facebook, twitter, pinterest, email, chat, letters, skywriting, carrier pigeons...
THANK YOU and BE FABULOUS!
Matt and Jeremy
Nope. We shot ONLY the footage needed for the teaser to use for fundraising. Everybody involved did so because they love and believe in the project and are in it for the long term results.
We'd love to have that challenge! Funds in excess of our production budget will be set aside for post-production work. Namely editing, sound mixing and color grading. Some portion will also be used for festival submissions and final production costs of discs and VOD. But first things first!
It is indeed. We must meet our goal or we get to keep nothing from the campaign. We are going big because we intend to actually pay our cast and crew instead of merely asking for favors. You can help by emailing or texting all our friends and get them involved, too. We are eager to tell this story!
