My nightmare has come true. When I was young the world only cared about looks, but it never mattered how I felt. How we felt... But that one person I thought that I could always rely on left me in the worst possible way. I just feel like I'm sinking deeper and deeper into Oblivion. Welcome to the KickStarter page for Deep Within by JV Game Studios. On this page, you'll find all the information you'll need to see and hear about the game, and we hope we can rely on your backing, support and input for the game. 

 

The idea of Deep Within spawned in December 2015 and came from the idea of changing how a game can be played each time you play, and that your choice may lead you to a completely different area or storyline of the game. With randomly generating segments and sections, we wanted to develop areas which can, and will change each time you play through. Some areas are designed purely to engross the player in the dark and eerie world, while others are brighter and provide puzzles to solve. The main aim of the game is to provide a system which generates various possible levels from a base level. For example, the core of an area stays the same, but the paths spawning from this core area will change each time you play - even if you die and re-load your save. This adds a deep level of replayability to the game, so even after you have completed the game once, you can play again and end up with a different story and area.

 

 

As with most story-driven games, Deep Within has a story which will engross the player on different emotional levels with twists and turns along the way. Stumbling into physical versions of their own emotions, the game starts with the player losing the person who means the most to them. After struggling with their mind, they eventually fall deep into a mental state of oblivion. Once the player finds themself in this dark world, they must find their own way out and discover how and why they lost the person who meant the most to them. 

Along the way, the player is accompanied by two companions - Lily & Luke, the voices inside - which consider themselves more than just a conscience. The voices encourage, argue and vie for attention of the player, creating judgments for the player to make. 

With the player able to choose his own path, and the game giving a random path, the story turns dynamic. This creates a new story depending on your choices.

 

 

 

As the game is in a first person view, it's plays similar to an Elder Scrolls game, with puzzles akin to Resident Evil and a story which changes and distorts from your own choices, skill level and the random generation of the game. You'll be tasked with initially trying to get yourself out of what appears to be a "cell", as if somebody has taken you prisoner. Along the way, you'll see your chances to get out, but are always thwarted by various traps and puzzles. Be careful along your way, as taking too long may result in certain areas being locked off or even death. Keep your wits about you, as you don't want to be sliced up by the dangers along the way.

Deep Within is developed by JV Game Studios using the Unity 5 Development Engine. Primarily based in the United Kingdom, each team member serves a different purpose in the project and provides their own personal input on various levels.

So far Deep Within has been developed using minimal funding, but to truly reach our goal, we need to reach out for support. The project funding will be used in various aspects of development, from paying the voice artists to web hosting and bills.

30% - Staff Wages 
We have to pay our staff for their time and effort towards this project. As we have some professional workers on this project, paying their fees is something which guarantees top-quality material.  

22% - Assets 
Assets can be quite expensive at times. We have the ability to make some assets ourselves, however, some assets require licensing and permissions. 25% of the funds will be used to build and license all assets we’ll be using in the world. This ranges from objects to audio to imagery. 

12% - Hardware & Equipment 
Improving our hardware and processing power enables us to develop longer and harder than we do right now. We don’t exactly need top of the range machines, but any improvement can be utilized well. 

3% - Website Hosting & Marketing
Every game and studio needs a website and hosting. We currently only have a free website with a paid-for domain for Deep Within. Funding allows us to get a professional website. 

9% - Licenses 
The license for Unity isn’t cheap, and although developing and publishing can be free, it is generally accepted that if you publish your game you should give Unity the credit and license for your work. The licenses also applies to other software we use such as FL Studio to develop audio. 

5% - Bills & Rental Costs
Electricity is not inexpensive these days, and renting an office for a year isn’t cheap either. Successful funding ensures us that we have the money to pay for any rental costs and all energy bills.

15% - Reward Fulfillment
We'll need to set some of the funding aside to fulfill all the rewards we have offered on this campaign. Anything left over in this will be spent on assets.

4% - Reserve Budget 
Whilst we have been as accurate as we can with our budget, things don’t always go to plan. We’ll reserve 4% of the budget in case of any unforeseeable problems. However, this is likely to be used up by the end of the production cycle.

RELEASE DATE:
We aim to get the game to market by June 2017, however depending on setbacks and advances, this date could change. We expect it to release sometime in Q4 2017.

DEMO:
All backers who pledge on or above the £20 mark get early access to Deep Within Demo builds during 2017.

OTHER PLATFORMS:
If we become successful, we'll also be looking at options such as Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch (providing Nintendo offer an IGP - Indie Game Program). Regardless of where we go, at the very least the game will be available on our website once it is complete.

 

 

Although reaching the initial goal will enable us to completely develop Deep Within, reaching additional targets will allow us to invest time and money in extra features. These features depend on how far the goals can be stretched, but will provide much more to the game upon completion: 

£22,000 - In-Game Achievement System Added 
Reaching this goal allows us to implement a wide selection of achievements within the game. It will give you extra goals to reach, such as discovering hidden areas or reaching a certain ending. 


£25,000 - Collectible System Implemented 

Reaching this second goal enables us to implement multiple collectibles in the game such as relics and other special items. This will then in turn enable the player to see and do things previously unavailable. 


£30,000 - Post-game Chapter Included 
Reaching this goal will allow us to add in an extra chapter of the game when you have completed it. We will be able to create an alternative view on the game from a completely different perspective. We'll release details in advance of release on this special addition.


£40,000 - 10% More Game World To Explore 
Reaching the fourth goal will enable us to expand the already expansive world by 10% - thus adding more exploring to be done. 


£55,000 - Two More Alternate Endings Added
Reaching this stretch goal will allow us to put in more endings to the game. With multiple endings already planned, having two more will add replayability to the game. 


£65,000 - Experience & Leveling System Added
Having the ability to earn experience through your actions in-game allows us to develop our combat system further. As you earn more experience, you would inevitably become stronger - adding a new spin on the game overall.


£80,000 - 20% More Game World To Explore
Reaching the fifth goal will enable us to expand the already expansive world by an additional 10% - resulting in a 20% bigger world.

Q. Is the game fully developed?
A. No, it isn't fully developed. We are currently around 40% through our development cycle as of August 2016.

Q. How many total platforms are you aiming for?
A. Our ultimate goal will be to get the game available on PC, PlayStation and Xbox platforms. We will initially begin with a PC release, and depending on various factors such as licensing and budget, we will attempt to bring the game to various other platforms.

Q. Are there any ways I can help develop the game with you?
A. We are offering the chance for some backers to design a section of the game. We may also require assistance from talented individuals in the future. Keep an eye on the KickStarter page and our websites for the opportunity.

Q. What if the game isn't funded completely on KickStarter?
A. We will attempt to continue development, but not having the budget available will mean that we would have to scale back production and may lose staff members. The worst case scenario would be that production of Deep Within gets cancelled.

Q. What type of game is Deep Within exactly?
A. First and foremost, Deep Within is an exploration game. The game is built around a story which develops around your own exploration and curiosity. The game includes puzzles and randomly generated sections in each area. It's exact type, we like to describe as "Stopuzurtion" - Story Puzzle Adventure Exploration - Yes, we know it's not a real word, we're trying to be funny.....

Q. Is there any combat in the game?
A. Yes, there will be a form of combat.

Q. How long does the game last?
A. It's hard to say exactly as the story length is determined purely by your own speed and your choices. If you choose certain options, you get to see more of the story. Additionally, the story could be different the second or third time around. As we are aiming for replayability, we want you to be able to complete the game achieving one story, play again and seeing a different story.

Q. Will there be any DLC?
A. We don't have any plans for DLC, but if we do every create any for Deep Within, we will most likely only make it free.

Q. How much will the game cost?
A. No price point has been set at the moment, but it will be determined by many factors during the development process. If we get Greenlit on Steam, then it will more than likely be Steam who set our price point. It will be communicated to all backers in due course.

Q. Is Deep Within just a Dungeon Crawler?
A. No. Although some areas are dungeon themed, there is a whole lot more to see inside the game than just Dungeons.

Risks and challenges

Deep within is an ambitious game, and we have a lot of aspirations for it. As with any game in development, there are always obstacles and hurdles to overcome at any given time. As a team with experience in game development, we believe that any challenge can be dealt with reasonably well and that the risks to development will always be low.
The higher we aim, the bigger our challenge will be and the higher the risks will become, however, the end product will be something which the entire team will always be proud of.
