"Take the religious fervor of Preacher, mix it up with the action chops of La Femme Nikita, sprinkle in a little bit of Dawn of the Dead and you have THE KILLING JAR, the most fun you can have legally. I cant wait to see where the twisted road takes this one!"
- Don Murphy, Producer, Transformers, Shoot 'Em Up, Natural Born Killers
Here's how I described The Killing Jar in an interview a couple years back: "If Sam Peckinpah directed Night of the Living Dead, if a bloody Old Testament story was ghost written by Kathryn Bigelow and John Carpenter, if God’s favorite film was The Outlaw Josey Wales...I wouldn't have written The Killing Jar."
In a more literal sense, The Killing Jar is a 200+ page comic series - SOON TO BE A LOCALLY PRINTED TPB WITH YOUR HELP - based on a feature length script I finished in 2007. 2007! Almost incredible to type that, frankly. Anyway, in January of 2008 I made contact with the artist Russ Brown about illustrating what was to become my first major comic. Come to find out it was his first comic too. And so we jumped in. COME SEE: http://www.facebook.com/KillingJar
We decided we'd approach the project as a work-for-hire gig, and Russ has been paid for every page. There have been raises and bonuses over the years, all of which he's earned with his professionalism and commitment to the project. As for deadlines, well, we decided there wouldn't be any. We had a beginning, middle and end. We had a strong outline and focus. But we'd invent and learn and shift and change as we went, as I rewrote the entire feature into individual issues and radically shifted chapters away from their source material. Comics aren't movies, movies aren't comics and we were learning as we went. And there were marriages and divorces and movings and shakings and sicknesses and children and the like. Life, basically.
CUTTING TO THE CHASE!
We're now DONE with the complete series. And much like my last trade paperback - Other Worlds, for you previous backers and friends - I want to print The Killing Jar locally and sustainably right here in Portland. With your help I can deliver professionally printed graphic novels to your door...and you can help me offset a 50% increase in production costs. Together, we can stay local and make TKJ pages shine on the highest quality paper possible! The Annual and other bonus material will be printed by my good friends in NJ, Comixpress.com. To wit: this Kickstarter campaign is going toward TPB printing costs and printing costs ALONE.
LET'S TALK ORIGINAL ART!
"Alright, Zimmerman, shut yer yap," you're thinking. "You can't possibly be giving away every single piece of The Killing Jar art for your Kickstarter campaign...can you?" I can! I will! Every page! Every cover! Every issue! Along with buttons, the photography based color annual, one of a kind prints, etc. Check the art out! It's in pencil - and sprayed with multiple layers of fixative, of course - except for several covers which are pencil AND ink. These are clearly marked. Also, every page is labeled by number and issue, covers are marked by issue and double-page spreads are marked as DPS and by issue. N/A means - you guessed it - not available!
Here are the COVERS, including the DPS COVER, both in their own reward categories: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150925779449564.432288.240475994563&type=3
Here are the DPS interiors, also in their own reward category: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150956760429564.435645.240475994563&type=3
And the ENTIRE series is going up on a weekly basis, so if you want a piece f original art, you'll find it here: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150720083459564.415462.240475994563&type=1
I WANT IT TO LOOK LIKE 16MM B+W FILM.
"Can you do that?" I asked Russ. "Sure," he said. And so we created a grainy, dirty, dusty look and feel to the book by going directly from pencil to Photoshop to Illustrator to the final page. No gaussian blurs. No sun flares. No sound effects. Just pure, raw lead on bristol. And that's just how we've done it, for over 200 pages and still going strong as we come, here and now, to the end.
Listen, if you don't like the idea of a violent neowestern / horror book with a strong female lead, I don't think you'll like The Killing Jar. Just FYI. That said, I can't thank the women and men who have endorsed this book from its inception as a major counterpoint to the majority of genre stories. You folks - and you know who you are - are the best.
I've paid for every page. I've worked for years to complete my book. And here we are! Thanks for looking at my Kickstarter campaign and thanks for listening to my story.
