Behind the Scenes: Mind Mapping the Travel Text
Today I'm going to share with you some behind the scenes glimpses of my creative process. I'm writing up the four or five pages of the travel stories for The Lotus and the Artichoke MALAYSIA.
Here's what I use to write up the stories:
- travel guides to Malaysia (Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, Stephen Loose)
- journal and sketch book
- business cards from hotels and restaurants
- artwork and photos from the trip
- other notes
Then I sit down and re-travel the whole trip with an illustrated mind map. I write down all the locations we visited and then connect them with their transport lines.
These are the things that I write up. Actually, I jot down anything that comes to mind and that will help me remember the adventures.
- where we stayed
- who we met
- where we ate
- if I got in the kitchen there or met the cooks
- particular dishes that inspired cookbook recipes
- activities and other things from that location
it ends up looking like this:
Then I get back on the computer and type up about six pages of stories using my outline and mind map. Inevitably, I have to edit it down a few pages and end up with about four pages that I can put into the design layout for the cookbook From there, I often have to further edit the text for clarity and space. And then I go through the whole text and mark it up with bold for the places that I visited.
Thanks again for your support & shares. Now it's time for me to get back to work and type up the travel stories! :-)
