Happy New Year! Huge Project Status Update.

Good morning folks! I promised an “official update” at the start of the year. Over the past couple months I haven’t posted an update, but I have been trying to keep up frequently with folks via the comments section, messages, email, and social media. Honestly, I just didn’t want to fill everyone’s inbox with less than happy news during the holidays.

There’s a lot to get caught up on since our last update, so let’s get started…

First off, I wanted to express my gratitude and appreciation to many backers for showing support in November when my Mom passed away. That event, my family mourning and adjusting to the loss, and the immediate holidays thereafter sapped a great deal of my focus and energy, and my progress on this project slowed dramatically (though we still remain far ahead of schedule).

I was blown away by the thoughtful comments, messages, emails, and even cards sent by some of you. This is an amazing community to be a part of! So, thank you, again.

So, Where Do We Stand?

While progress was slow during those last two months, it was never at a standstill (though I’m sure some weeks it must have seemed like it). I continued making updates and distributing files via the Digital Distribution Tool at a slower pace, but those updates did add up.

All of the Map Icon Sets have been released. That’s over 620 Map Icons + the Cartographers Toolkit. The Master File (a ZIP containing all of these) is available on everyone’s “My Account” page in the DDT.

Also, the Kickstarter funded 195 maps. We currently have 196 maps released. Which makes it look like we’re 100% done with the map releases as well. However, we’re not quite done yet! The final count of maps that are to be released has been updated to 230. An explanation for that coming later in this update.

That means everyone gets 35 extra maps and book is going to be roughly 20% larger than originally planned. After all, it *is* called "The BIG Book of Maps for Tabletop Roleplaying Games.”

So, without further ado -- here is a summary display of everything that’s been completed and released since our last official project summary update:

Where Did All the Extra Maps Come From?

I have mentioned my Patreon project in previous updates here on Kicksdtarter, and it was doing relatively well – bringing in a couple hundred dollars every month. I know many backers of this Kickstarter were also supporters of my Patreon, and I wholeheartedly appreciated their support!

Without getting into the muck and mire of the details, back in December Patreon announced that their company would start charging every patron (those pledging support) extra money on top of what they pledged as “processing” fees. They also only gave a two week notice before the roll out date of those changes. In my opinion, it was a poorly devised plan and didn’t set well with me at all. So, as a result, I decided to leave the Patron platform as a creator.

Amidst tremendous public backlash, Patreon later admitted they had made a mistake, apologized to everyone, and announced they would not be implementing those changes. I admire a company that can admit its mistakes. However, I was left feeling as if I couldn’t trust the platform any longer and stuck with my decision to leave.

All of the unexpected extra maps that were added to this project in December are those I had originally released via Patreon in 2017. Any map title appended with a “[P]” in the DDT means that map came from my Patreon releases.

I also offered those who pledged to my account on Patreon to have access as backers of this Kickstarter. Since others who didn’t back the Patreon would now be getting the maps they pledged and paid for, I felt it was only fair and a win-win for everyone to offer them the benefit. For those who were both Kickstarter Backers and Patreon backers, I committed to adding an extra map to this project as an extra bonus. Hooray! More maps!

In Conclusion –

With the start of the New Year, I’m feeling like I’m getting back into my productivity groove. Though I now have quite a bit of catch-up work to do all around, I plan on completing and releasing the remaining maps for this project over the next 1-2 weeks, and then have the PDF released to backers during the following week. We are in the final stage of this project!

I hope to have the files for the print proofs of the book sent off to the printers before January ends. Then print book vouchers can go out as soon as I see the proofs and confirm they are free of errors.

My thanks to everyone for sticking with me during the lull while I dealt with personal matters.

We’re currently looking good to complete this entire project three months or more ahead of schedule. So, back to work I go! Thank you all again for the amazing support. You’re all awesome.

Have a safe week!

@Stephen: You know, that actually sounds like a really fun idea, and something I'd like to have for my own office. Once I get everything released for the project, I I will come back and create and release here a poster-sized graphic of all of the map thumbnails that can then be printed out as a poster. I think it would be a fun way to represent the entire project in a display piece. If I forget and get caught-up working on other things after the book release, feel free to ping me here again to remind me of this. I'll totally make it. :)

@ Stefan: Thank you! I find it's always best to be up front and available to the community; especially when things go a bit awry. Words can really adequately express the gratitude I feel to everyone who helped make this project possible.

Thank you for your continued output and for handling the KS like this. I would have absolutely no qualms about supporting another KS from you.

I appreciate the transparency in your update. Honestly, this has been one of the more rewarding kickstarters i've backed. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for your work, the free maps and this update here. A creator that is transparent, hangs in there despite suffering losses and is as dedicated as you are deserves all the support from the community.
