A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
We will return shortly, to make kayaking better than ever.
Please take 3 seconds to give us your thoughts!
Justin Case Kayak is the lightest, most portable folding kayak.
Imagine a kayak that you can throw over your shoulder, store in your closet and fit into the trunk of your car! Imagine a kayak that allows you to explore further, without sacrificing portability.
We have reworked the concept of the kayak, into a folding, portable one that weighs under 6 lbs and folds into a 40" x 5" roll.
One of the best things about being in nature is exploring and letting the road take you wherever it leads. With the Justin Case Kayak, you can decide on a moment’s notice if you want to walk around a lake or paddle across it. We know that many adventurous people are passionate about living in the moment and going wherever the trail takes them.
Justin Case Kayak is an idea born out of frustration with the size, cost and storage requirements of traditional kayaks. One grad student’s frustration grew into an international design and engineering collaboration between passionate outdoorsmen.
We deconstructed the idea of a kayak and recreated it, from bottom up. We stuck to the essentials (a sturdy frame and water/tear-proof skin) and innovated them – using carbon fiber to make the boat lighter, and the versatility of 3D printers for added portability. Ripstop skin will keep you safely afloat, in style. We have built and water-tested prototype after prototype to arrive at a boat that is lightweight, fun, safe to use and durable. We’ve also tried to keep our boat green, by using as little material as possible.
Justin Case is made from a lightweight carbon fiber frame held together by custom, 3D-printed connectors. The kayak skin is made from durable, waterproof ripstop skin. Ripstop is manufactured from intertwined nylon fibers that have a great strength-to-weight ratio, and stop tears from spreading.
Assembled Dimensions: 9.7’L x 26”W x 9”H
Weight: 5.7 lbs
Pack size: 40”L x 5”W x 5”H
Assembly time: 10 minutes
Skin material: Ripstop
Frame material: Carbon fiber tube
Connectors: 3D printed plastic
Max Capacity: 300 pounds
Storage capacity: The rear hatch dry storage is 4500 cubic inches (75 liters), behind the seat storage is 3000 cubic inches (50 liters).
Production prototype may differ slightly from these dimensions. We are constantly improving based on your feedback, to bring you the sturdiest, safest and lightest kayak!
We have tested Justin Case Kayak on lakes, calm rivers, and bays. The kayak is not suitable for whitewater or otherwise turbulent waters. Always wear a life jacket and check the weather before you head out!
Your first time assembling the kayak may take up to fifteen minutes. As you get more accustomed to using the kayak, you will be able to put it together in 10 minutes or less!
Kayaking has never been simpler!
Justin Case Kayak is made with the modern adventurer in mind. We are the generation of studio apartments and two door sedans. We are the eager weekend explorers of the outdoors. We respect mobility and value the environment. We like to travel light.
We invite you to rethink kayaking – we would like this hobby to be accessible to everyone. That’s why we made a lightweight, affordable and portable kayak – for anything from a weekend trip to the lake to a just-in-case emergency vessel.
We believe adventure doesn’t stop at the beaten path. We believe in taking the road less traveled, and heeding our whims. Let’s make kayaking affordable, make nature accessible, and adventuring easy. Justin Case Kayak has already been tested in multiple locations around the world, and now we are ready to bring the finished product to you in the summer of 2017.
We created a product that is versatile, easy to use, and cost-effective. Here are the things we are most proud of!
We wanted to develop a kayak that was light as a feather...or 5.7 pounds of feathers. Imagine carrying around a kayak that weighs as much as a chihuahua. We don't want to just talk about how lightweight Justin Case Kayak is, we want to show you!
Here is how we compare to the other guys:
A REWARDING EXPERIENCE
We are a team of passionate outdoor enthusiasts who believe that adventuring should not be limited by equipment. We are dedicated to bringing the best product forward.
We have built and tested Justin Case Kayak, and we are confident that you will enjoy it as much as we do. We need your help to bring our kayak to the world!
We launched Justin Case Kayak on KickStarter, because we believe in transparency, and in the power of the collaborative process. Throughout the campaign, we take all your comments and suggestions back to the design table, to continue enhancing and improving your kayak. We value you - passionate and like-minded individuals, and we are excited about making something you'll love!
The breakdown of managing the funds raised is as follows:
At Justin Case Kayak, we have two key areas that must be in tip top shape. The first is product engineering. We have to ensure we have the expertise to make changes to the design quickly and reliably. That is why we have two product engineers on the team, for issue mitigation.
The second area is raw material sourcing and manufacturing – we have to make sure we have clear material requirements and that these are sourced reliably and responsibly. We have found a reliable source of carbon fiber rods for the frame.
The skin can be purchased wholesale, and is tailored to our design through seamstresses – we have a lot of quality potential contractors to choose from to ensure the product is shipped on time. Since we use 3D-printed components, we are not limited to a single supplier.
We maintain quality control by inspecting every product individually. We are still working out how to best direct our workflow once we need to scale production. We are well-positioned to deliver a quality product on time.
You have a small car, live in a small apartment and like your active, outdoor weekends. The full-size kayak is too big of a commitment, and too much of a cost. May we suggest the foldable, portable, backpack-fittable alternative?
