If Walls Could Talk is the upcoming Roots/Americana album by multi-instrumentalist Justin Johnson, inspired by a Braxton Dixon built home in the Tennessee Hills, where Justin is writing and arranging the music for this newest release. Braxton Dixon is the renowned architect who designed and built the homes of music icons such as Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, & Marty Stuart, using centuries-old wood and one-of-a-kind architectural treasures.
Following up on that inspiration of writing and recording within hallowed walls steeped in history and tradition, the album is set to be recorded at the legendary Cash Cabin this April, and will be produced by 5X Grammy Award winning producer, John Carter Cash.. son of the one and only Johnny Cash.
In 2014, Justin Johnson released his Smoke & Mirrors double album, and has been touring the globe ever since, sharing the music of that album with fans from Tasmania to Paris. After 2 years, 3 continents, and over a 100,000 miles on the tourbus, it’s time get back behind the microphones and do some more recording!
In preparation for this new recording project, Justin has spent the winter in Nashville TN, devoting his undivided attention to writing and arranging the music for If Walls Could Talk. He found his inspirational sanctuary nestled in the hills just north of Nashville, in a home built by the legendary architect, Braxton Dixon. The time in this beautiful home has inspired the warm, raw, and deeply Roots-based sound and feel of this album. The time spent within these walls has yielded a wealth of new original songs.. and steeping in the musical culture and traditions of Nashville has left an unmistakable mark on the tracks that will comprise If Walls Could Talk, which will pay homage to the Folk, Country, Blues, and Americana influences that Music City is famous for.
In order to bottle up the magic of this album, we will be working with 5X Grammy Award winning producer John Carter Cash, to record and produce If Walls Could Talk. We will be recording at the Cash Cabin, where John’s father, the one and only Johnny Cash, recorded the American Recordings and captured some of his most enduring hits. There are few places on earth that possess the history, soul, and pure mojo that the Cash Cabin holds within it’s walls.
With the changing climate of today’s music business, record labels are no longer necessary for independent artists to produce a project of this magnitude.. in fact the “business” of a label, with it’s focus on the financial bottom line, can often have the unfortunate effect of controlling and squelching the art. We have chosen to remain free from those ties, so that we can produce music that is solely informed by the artistic inspiration and process.
What that means is that, in this new age of crowd-sourced funding, we depend on YOU, the Music Fans, to make it possible to cover the costs of bringing this album to life.
The costs that a record label would normally cover include recording, mixing, mastering, duplication, printing, shipping, marketing, distribution, licensing fees, promotions, and more. In this new age of digital communication and social media, it is now possible for us, as artists, to share the vision with you and cover those expenses by organizing pre-orders of the album, and other fun incentives, like hand-built guitars, signature products, one-of-a-kind packages, and other great rewards.
