The first photo book and traveling photo exhibition on the legendary singer-songwriter and visual artist Daniel Johnston.

Hi there, welcome to my Kickstarter page!

I’m thrilled that this photo project with Daniel Johnston that began 4 years ago has now become something that can be shared with all of you: Daniel's incredible and dedicated fans.  As photographer, I feel privileged to have had the chance to work on a passion project like this with an artist I admire so greatly, and I can't think of a better way to share my work than to team up with you to make the first-ever photo book of Daniel and launch a traveling exhibition.

We will be publishing limited first edition photo books in collaboration with Art Director Joshua Gurrie and do traveling pop-up exhibitions in various cities.  The first exhibition is set to launch in Austin (venue TBD) during the SXSW Festival in March 2013 with Louis Black of SXSW and The Austin Chronicle hosting the exhibition.  I hope to have such a generous and influential host in every city to make each exhibition unique. Hopefully the Austin show will get the momentum going for exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Tokyo, in between and beyond, but this all depends on how much support we receive here.

The current funding goal reflects the minimum cost of putting together 1,000 copies of the photo book of which we have about 68 pages so far, and exhibitions in 3 major cities - Austin, New York, and Los Angeles. This includes offset printing, publishing, and distributing the photo books to independent book shops ($15k, which includes shipping your rewards!), and making exhibition prints from negatives and framing them ($10k). About $1,500 will go to Kickstarter and Amazon fees. The remainder $3,500 won't cover all the rest listed below but it's definitely a good start and we wanted to set the goal on the lower side just to be safe. The rest we hope to cover are travel and accommodations for myself and Daniel to attend the openings, putting together the opening night for all 3 exhibitions (hopefully with performances by special guests), shipping costs for the framed photographs to its exhibition city, and space rental to set up pop-up exhibitions if we can't find existing galleries to host us. The more money we raise beyond our fundraising goal, the more cities we can add to the roster. With additional funding, I could also continue photographing Daniel this year.

As the way Kickstarter works, all of this would be made possible ONLY if we reach our fundraising goal before the April 3rd deadline - so if we do not reach 30k by the deadline, no money changes hands. However, we can always raise beyond our set goal as long as it's before the deadline. So your support, especially early on to help us generate momentum, would be much appreciated. If you're a gallery owner, director, or curator interested in having this exhibition in your city, please do email me because that would be a huge additional asset to this project. I would also welcome magazines, musicians, or artists interested in collaborating on and/or hosting an exhibition.

I know this is just the beginning of a fun journey ahead and hope to continue documenting Daniel for many more years to come.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your support thus far.  Even a message of support is enough to bring this project to light. We look forward to seeing you soon!

ABOUT DANIEL JOHNSTON:

Daniel Johnston has spent the last 20 or so years exposing his heartrending tales of unrequited love, cosmic mishaps, and existential torment to an ever-growing international cult audience. Initiates, including a healthy number of discerning musicians and critics, have hailed him as an American original in the style of bluesman Robert Johnson and country legend Hank Williams.

His songs have been covered by a number of well-known artists including Beck, Tom Waits, Eddie Vedder, TV on the Radio, The Flaming Lips, Yo La Tengo, Wilco, Death Cab For Cutie, M. Ward, Guster, Sparklehorse, Bright Eyes, Jeff Mangum, Spiritualized, and many more. Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain famously wore a t-shirt bearing the cover art of Daniel's "Hi, How Are You" album to the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards and frequently wore it on camera during interviews. Daniel's artwork has been featured in the Whitney Museum and in prestigious art galleries around the world.
