This January, I’m embarking on a new adventure: recording a solo album of original instrumental tunes. And I'm asking for your help!
These 15 tunes (waltzes, jigs, slow reels, mazurkas, marches, scottishes) are inspired by my experiences playing traditional dance music on piano and accordion over the last ten years, especially music from New England, France, and Québéc.
Renowned Québécois guitarist Yann Falquet will lend his ear and expertise as producer, and each tune will be a different collaboration with guest musicians with strong New England roots: Becky Tracy (fiddle), Katie McNally (fiddle), Andrew VanNorstrand (fiddle), Noah VanNorstrand (fiddle, feet, percussion), Anna Patton (clarinet), Mark Roberts (banjo), Daniel Hawkins (cello), Rachel Bell (accordion), Kirsten Lamb (bass), Mia Bertelli (vocals), and Marie Hamilton (harp), as well as Yann on guitar.
The sound will be at times intimate and simple and beautiful, and at other times layered with different timbres. I am so excited to be working with some of my dear friends and personal heroes!
January 15, 2018, one month away, we go into the studio! We're recording at Great North Sound Society in Maine, with Dana Billings engineering. A project like this has a lot of expenses: the producer, engineer, studio time, guest musicians, mixing, mastering, artwork and photography, and duplication. I'm hoping to raise at least $8,000 via Kickstarter. A first stretch goal of $10,000 would cover most of of the production and recording. The second stretch goal of $15,000 would cover the whole album, including mixing, mastering, and printing. Any additional funds would go directly towards improving the album, giving us more time to rehearse and record.
A few years ago I wouldn't even have imagined taking on this kind of project. Yet now, here I am, thanks in no small part to the communities of music and dance that continue to sustain and inspire my creativity. I am so grateful for the various musical collaborations at countless camps, late night jams, and dances across the country, that are now coming together to bring life to this recording. Thank you so much for your support!
Risks and challenges
The goal is a spring release, but the timeline may get pushed back a month or two if things come up. Everything has been carefully planned out, but you never know during the recording process!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
