Who Am I?
Hi! My name is Julie Haven and I am a singer/songwriter. Whether you already know me or have randomly found this project, thank you for stopping in!
A Little Background
I feel that the music industry today has conditioned us to only want to listen to happy, upbeat music that makes us forget about life and while it’s true that sometimes we need that element of distraction, my songs are different. I write to connect myself and others with expressions of our own life experiences and many people have reached out to tell me how my songs have helped them through difficult and tumultuous times in their lives. My music is full of raw emotion; it is passionate and honest. In a world where mental health and suicide awareness is at an all-time high, I believe my songs can help others realize that they are not alone and if my music can help one more person, then I feel like I’ve accomplished something important.
I have been working to release a full-length studio recording of my original music for several years now, and the journey has been intense and challenging. I've written many, many songs, however, the twelve I want to put on this album are the nearest and dearest to me. They were all written between 2002 - 2014 and primarily deal with painful breakups, domestic abuse, and depression.
This compilation of songs led me to title the album: "Dramatic Departures". While heartbreak may be one obvious meaning behind this title, it also references the forks in the road we encounter as we grow and change through life and the reality that we are not alone despite any depression or hopelessness we may feel. To be completely transparent, I have not written a song since 2014 and believe it is because these songs have never truly been captured as I envisioned them.
That is, until this year.
In January of 2018, I began recording with producer Stephen Leiweke at Yackland Studio in Nashville, TN. It has been an amazing experience as we have worked to pull ideas and sounds together to create these songs. I’ve worked through many roadblocks as an independent artist and personally invested around $10,000 to date on this project, and now I need your help to finish bringing it to life!
How Does This Work?
Kickstarter is an ‘all or nothing’ platform. This means that if the project goal is not met, all backers will receive a complete refund (but no rewards) and I, the artist, will not receive any money. Those are some high stakes, right?
Setting a goal for this campaign has been VERY scary for me because of how much I have personally invested so far into the creation of this record, financially, emotionally, and mentally, but I BELIEVE that you are here because you believe in it as much as I do and you’re ready to help me achieve this goal. The record is about halfway completed, we have just 6 more songs to finish. Here is a ‘costs breakdown’ to explain what that looks like in Studio World:
- Recording and Mixing 6 remaining songs ($1,000/Song) = $6,000.
- Recording real Piano at a separate location = $1,000.
- Mastering all 12 songs ($75/Song) = $900.
- Hiring core musicians for 6 songs (Drums, Bass, Guitar; $500/Song) = $3,000.
- Digital Streaming (ex. Spotify) and Purchases (ex. iTunes) = $100.
- Physical Distribution (Printing CDs) = $1,000.
- Kickstarter Fee = 5% of funds raised if 100% funded = $400.
- Additional 3-5% processing fee for each transaction = $240 - $400.
Total: $12,640 - $12,800
- Album Art = $100 - $1,000
- Hiring String Quartet = $3,000
- Promotion and Advertising = $100 - $3,000
- Merchandise = $100 - $3,000
Grand Total: $15,940 - $22,800
Becoming A Backer
You may have noticed that my Kickstarter campaign goal is set at $6,000, significantly lower than the actual cost of finishing this record. I would LOVE to raise more than $6,000 towards this album and there is potential for that to happen if you are willing to become a Backer! I‘ve made incredible progress on this project and have worked so hard to make the best product I possibly can. I CANNOT wait until I’m able to share it with you! Thank you so much for taking the time to learn more about Dramatic Departures, I’m looking forward to having you on my team for the rest of this journey!
Risks and challenges
This section is required by Kickstarter and will provide a few extra details regarding potential challenges and risks associated with crowdfunding.
To reiterate, Kickstarter is an all or nothing crowdfunding platform. Meaning, if the goal I set is not met, nothing happens. That is a risk and a challenge.
If I only make the minimum goal, it will still be challenge to produce the actual physical rewards (CDs, shipping costs, etc). This is not to imply you will not receive your rewards, but to give you my promise that if we fund this campaign, everyone will receive their rewards, even if the timeline is delayed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
