About this project
A story about magic on the wrong side of the tracks...
Misfortune High is the story of Biscuit, a spoiled rich kid, who goes to the most prestigious magic academy in the city. Biscuit gets caught cheating and lying, but his father decides not to bail him out as he usually does. Instead, his father punishes Biscuit by sending him to a magic school in a bad neighborhood.
Biscuit finds himself in a place where his privilege and social status count for absolutely nothing. Biscuit makes friends, but he also makes enemies, and he makes it his mission to get out of Misfortune High.
Misfortune High Book 1 is a 36 page book created by Los Angeles-based illustrator, Jules Rivera. If you like comedy, urban fantasy, and comics where there is more than one person of color on screen at a time, then check out this book.
Kickstarter is all about reaching new audiences with comics who would otherwise be passed over by a mainstream publisher. Misfortune High is an all-ages story that is about diversity, and the power of Kickstarter puts the choice into your hands, the readership, where it belongs.
This campaign will give you a high quality, high volume print run, which brings down the cost of the book. This allows me to give you more rewards and swag. Everybody wins.
Misfortune High has now rolled into Stretch Goal mode, having met its initial $3000 goal! In this video I discuss the path forward.

How will the Kickstarter Funds be used?
Misfortune High Book 1 is completed, so there are no more production costs to cover. This is great news because it means you won't have to wait for the book to be completed.
The main use of the Kickstarter funds is printing.
The books are intended to be perfect bound, not saddle stitched, which makes for a much more powerful presentation. A print run for a book of this size and quality will run roughly $2000, and that doesn't count shipping books to readers, or any of the costs of the extra rewards items. The stated goal will go towards printing the book, sourcing rewards items, and shipping the packages safely and effectively. Anything beyond that goes towards upgrading the value of the book, including adding spot UV and possibly even going with a hard cover.
Risks and challenges
Every project faces risks and challenges, but that doesn't mean there isn't a game plan for tackling these risks. Here are some of my risk factors and how I plan to address them.
+ Many comics projects on Kickstarter launch without being complete. For me, this is not an issue because Misfortune High Book 1 has been finished for months. There was an early test print of the book done in early May, wherein I identified the associated pitfalls with printing this book. Not only will this book be ready sooner than many other KS comics projects, but it will be printed to the best quality suited to the book.
+ The book comes printed with a printer that has a great reputation with other independent artists, PrintNinja. They also have speedy turn around times to ensure this book will ship quickly and you won't be left waiting forever.
+ I'm my own creative team, so you don't have to worry about the quality of future books declining from collaborative break downs. I can't break up with myself. That's physically impossible.
+ I've worked as a collaborator and assistant on other Kickstarter campaigns including but not limited to the Oxymoron Volume 1 Hard Cover by ComixTribe. With the experience I've gained observing these teams function, I believe I can lead my own campaign to fulfillment and success.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
