About this project
Regardless of whether you are trying to lose body fat, maintain or gain weight, diets are hard to stick to. Calorie counting and weighing food every day just becomes time consuming and is unsustainable with our busy lives.
With MealKitt there is no need for all of this, it creates average portion sizes for your specific diet. Allowing you to create 1,2 or 3 meals in one go.
Simply fill each compartment with the corresponding food types.
The sliders' unique design allows them to slide back easily and then lock into place, ready to be filled up.
Portion sizes for every diet
Each number on the MealKitt represents a different diet goal for both men and women - one MealKitt fits all!
- 1: Female Diet Goal To Lose Body Fat - Approx. 1,400 Cal/day divided into 45% Protein, 35% Fat, 20% Carbohydrates.
- 2: Male Diet Goal To Lose Body Fat - Approx. 1,900 Cal/day divided into 45% Protein, 35% Fat, 20% Carbohydrates.
- 3: Female Diet Goal For A Balanced Diet - Approx. 2,000 Cal/day divided into 30% Protein, 30% Fat, 40% Carbohydrates.
- 4: Male Diet Goal For A Balanced Diet - Approx. 2,500 Cal/day divided into 30% Protein, 30% Fat, 40% Carbohydrates.
- 5: Female Diet Goal To Gain Mass - Approx. 2,600 Cal/day divided into 30% Protein, 20% Fat, 50% Carbohydrates.
- 6: Male Diet Goal To Gain Mass - Approx. 3,100 Cal/day divided into 30% Protein, 20% Fat, 50% Carbohydrates.
Each diet goal has been specifically calculated based on the NHS (UK National Health Service) guidelines for an average man and woman. Each number on the MealKitt calculates a different diet portion size, as shown in the breakdown below:
The following example is set for a man wanting to lose body fat (pre-set number 2):
The MealKitt creates a portion size for you to fill with UNCOOKED food; fill each section to the top and that is your food for the day or for 3 meals in one go, 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches or 3 dinners. Salads, greens and white vegitables are considered "free", so you can eat as much of them as you like!
If you fancy more variety, you can prepare one meal or two meals at the same time by filling up the compartments to the meal prep lines.
The MealKitt Quick Reference Food Guide Is Free With Every MealKitt.
How does it work?
Using the NHS calorie guide we calculated the macro (% of protein, carbohydrates and fats) nutrient breakdown for the most common diet plans. We then took the average calorie, size and weight of over 100 different types of food to create a visual space illustrating portion sizes for each diet goal. Portion control is not an exact science, but it is a great diet support.
The MealKitt also allows you to combine two people's daily amounts, so that cooking for a friend or partner is even easier.
MealKitt Chopping Board
The MealKitt comes with a beautifully crafted BPA free, 5mm thick food-safe chopping board, complete with non-slip rubber grips and a liquid runoff reservoir. It conveniently stores away on top of the MealKitt, doubling up as a lid to protect stored food.

Summary Of Features
We now need your help to bring the Mealkitt to life and help the lives of those who have struggled with diets.
MealKitt Design Process:
Over a year of product development has meant we have weighed, measured and calculated plus asked for a lot of feedback to now make the MealKitt a unique one-of-a-kind kitchen product to help people with sustainable diets.
We teamed up with a great product development team, personal trainers, foodies and nutritional advisors to create a completely original product.
The Mealkitt has been designed to be as compact as possible, in order to take up very little space in your kitchen or fridge. At just 75mm in height and approximately the size of an A4 piece of paper, Mealkitt is the perfect food preparation solution.
This ultra high quality product is made from professional grade materials and when combined with the chopping board the whole package weighs 1.8 kilos (4 lbs) . This makes international shipping very expensive which we are subsidising to make sure the Kickstarter community receives their pledge at the lowest possible price
Q: How can it give an accurate measure, as food comes in different shapes and sizes?
A: The MealKitt was developed taking an average calorie and weight from over 100 different types of food to find the the most accurate average per food category.
Q: How was the concept developed?
A: It was inspired by and evolved from an old method of portion control that I had remembered from school (illustrated below). Thank you Miss Muffat for teaching me this when I was just 12 years old.
Q: How big is it and how much does it weigh?
A: It is about the size of an A4 piece of paper and about 75mm in height. It is a solid, beautiful crafted product weighing 2 kg (4 lbs).
Q: What is the Size & Tea Spoon Guide for on the Chopping Board?
A: The size guide icon gives you a recommended size in which to cut your food, so as to allow it to fit more efficiently inside the relevant sections of the MealKitt.
The Teaspoon size guide is to be used for your recommended allowance of Peanut Butter, Honey or Syrup. The amount you use will reflect your own personal diet goal. For example; 1/2 measure if you are a woman losing weight or 1 spoon if you are a man losing weight. A woman maintaining her weight would use 1 spoon and a man maintaining his weight would use 1 1/2 spoonfuls. A woman and a man aiming to gain weight would use 1 1/2 spoonfuls and 2 spoonfuls respectively.
Q: What is the Big Green Cup for?
A: MealKitt was designed to be used with raw food, most of which remains relatively the same size once cooked. On cooking rice and oats however, you will find that these foods will approximately double in size. The Big Green Cup allows you to measure uncooked rice, oats and quinoa.
One diet number on the Big Green Cup = 1/2 way up on the Slider Scoop. So it allows you to accommodate those expandable foods into you daily meal preparation. The only cooked product you can put in the carbohydrate section is cooked rice, oats or quinoa, for example if you bought a pre-cooked brand, such as Uncle Bens Rice.
Q: What is Tooling?
A: Tooling is creating a big industrial part for a manufacturing machine. This will then create the MealKitt in mass production.
Q: How long is the App going to take to design?
A: We have sourced some great designers to help us start the development of our App. We know that this can take time which is why backers will be emailed the workout videos, images and video recipes so that you can get started before the App is finished.
Q: How will the money be spent?
A: We have created a pie chart to illustrate how we intend to use the money pledged:
Q: What if I just want to use it to see if I am having enough of one food group?
A: No problem! You can use the MealKitt to get a visual representation of the amount of one food group you should be eating on average per day.
Q: What are the calorie and grams markers on the MealKitt?
A: You can use the MealKitt as an average reference for the amount of calories for each food group you should be eating each day. Or you can measure food to the average weight amount.
Q: Who do you use for shipping?
A: Letterboxdistribution.com are one of the UKs top direct marketing specialists and have been leading the field for almost three decades. We constantly push new boundaries to provide you with campaigns that break the mould and capture people’s attention.
Q: Do you use the MealKitt?
A: The concept of the MealKitt was developed to help my mother and I with our diets. We both used the early prototype to help us with portion control and the results were fantastic. These results sparked the development of the full MealKitt product.
I Lost 50lbs in 5 Months using the prototype Mealkitt and 30 mins exercise a day.
My mother used it after she dramatically lost 150 lbs after her gastric bypass to fight malnutrition. We were the test subjects for the MealKitt and are proof that knowing portion sizes and nutrition is key to a healthy weight. Her weight change and diet was so remarkable, she was even featured on BBC Radio 4 talking about how portion control was the key to her success.
Q: What if I don't always want to cut up my food?
A: We have included equivalent average calories or weight next to each diet line moulded into the MealKitt, so on occasion when you don't want to cut up food, you can always use more traditional methods to measure. This product is adaptable to meet every need. We will also include a grams to pounds conversion table in the user guide.
Q: Do you have a website to have a look at?
A: Yes www.mealkitt.com. Here you can sign up to receive our email updates too.
Q: What were the average calorie amounts based on for the MealKitt?
A: For a healthy balanced diet, a man needs around 10,500kJ (2,500Kcal) a day to maintain his weight. For a woman, that figure is around 8,400kJ (2,000Kcal) a day. These values can vary depending on age, metabolism and levels of physical activity, among other things. This reference was taken from the UKs National Health Service national guidelines. For more information visit www.NHS.uk.
Q: I'm based in the UK and I'm thinking of starting up a Kickstarter campaign, can you recommend a film crew, logistics etc..?
A: Absolutely, we recommend letterboxdistribution for great shipping rates and bluelightproductions were fantastic with all things film and video. Kingbeeanimations did a great job animating the MealKitt for our advertising, and NTMarketing for our marketing and social media.
Thank you for taking the time to read about our product, we hope you like it and would like to help us develop further. If you have any feedback or questions we would love to hear from you, just pop us an email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Q: Doesn't height an age make a difference?
A: Yes, but interestingly all factors being equal an increase in 1 foot in hight will only increase calorie amount by approximately 150 calories. Also for every 10 years of age it decreases 100 calories, starting from the adult age of 18.

Risks and challenges
We're so excited to launch the MealKitt, a uniquely designed food preparation product that helps you to visualise your daily food amount. Its design is slimline, clean and simple and very effective in helping you reach your goal weight.
We already have functioning prototypes and the manufacturing design brief and factory production are ready to go. We are still tweaking the MealKitt to make it even better so the final product may vary slightly. The chopping board design has changed multiple times already. We want you to have the best version possible.
We have preliminary agreements in place with our manufacturers and our shipping and logistic companies, but there still might be a risk of delay due to unforeseen circumstances, since challenges tend to arise during production. Should this occur, we are prepared to deal with these head on, having teamed up with a fantastic product development team design2market who are a wonderful design company. We have also teamed up with a patenting attorney & trademark firm Wynne-Jones, to protect the Mealkitt concept.
We already have investors on board with a wealth of experience to help drive and develop the MealKitt further. Should any unexpected encounters arise we have a strong team backing us.
App development is a big part of our plan and we will keep you updated every step of the way with its creation and integration.
We want you to enjoy your food and use the mealkitt as a way to visualize, learn and prepare your food.
