Juice Vocal Ensemble are commissioning three groundbreaking female artists to compose new works for three female voices and electronics to be premiered at the ‘Venus Unwrapped’ Festival at Kings Place, London, on 19th October 2019, with further performances planned in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland throughout 2020. Juice have been longing for more repertoire with electronics for years and Kings Place have offered us the perfect venue and theme under which this project can go ahead. We’ve already raised £5,000 ourselves (which includes a generous £1,000 from Kings Place) but having hit a brick wall with all other funding trusts, bodies, councils and pots of money available, we now need your help! Join us on this exhilarating journey and help us bring this project to fruition.
The theme of the programme is that of Venus - as a Goddess, as a planet, as a volcanic disrupter and as a bringer of love.
Gazelle Twin’s piece will draw inspiration from the ‘dark side’ of Venus and its somewhat mangled folkloric, religious and ritualistic traditions; fusing twisted, sermonic voices, ecclesiastical harmonies, and vast electronic soundscapes.
Olivia Louvel’s piece will consist of a triptych of impressionistic touches from 16th century poet Louise Labe’s love sonnets that reference Venus, contrasting with abrasive sonic landscapes and volcanic activity. The piece will explore identity, gender, feminism and cross-cultural artistic relationships.
Nwando Ebizie’s piece will re-tell the birth of Venus imagined as an uncanny dive into the self and the double via a pre-language nightmare. It will take the mystery cults of pre-Hellenistic times, psycho-mythology and Afrodiasporic ritual culture as its inspiration.
We will premiere these new pieces on 19th October 2019 at Kings Place and then tour them throughout 2020 and beyond. Then they will become part of the Juice repertoire FOREVER and EVER. HURRAH!

‘Suspended somewhere between reclaimed pop exotica and Afrofuturism, it’s perhaps with Ebizie, in the intimacy of a confined theatre, that the elusive claim to a new sort of live music-theatre hybrid gains ground.’
‘Increasingly unhinged in the best possible way… you will need to leave your inhibitions in the cloakroom.’

Risks and challenges
When we formed Juice a few years ago (we'll leave you to guess how many...) all we knew was that we loved singing together and that we loved singing new music and working with composers. We've faced many funding challenges over the years (just like every other musician EVER) and our commitment to this project is no different - an unwavering belief that these pieces will be truly brilliant and groundbreaking and exciting and that audiences will love them. If you like the sound of all of this and want to be a part of making it all happen then go ahead and choose your reward! Juice xLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
