About this project
Now that we've passed our goal, I'd like to roll out our first STRETCH goal! If we can get this thing up to $8,000, everyone who has pledged for a $50 reward or higher gets the Kitchen Herb Pack thrown in to their capsule for FREE! If you've already chosen a reward that gives you the Kitchen Herb Pack, you'll get the Medicinal Herb Pack thrown in instead (if you've chosen a reward that gives you multiple capsules, every capsule gets the extra pack). If you've chosen reward #10 (which already comes with every seed variety I have to offer), you get to choose any extra pack from the list!
The concept behind Urban Farm is to create fully customizable, sustainable gardens that will provide renewable food year-after-year and even continue thriving in economic crisis. Most "survival gardens" I've researched on the web are way overpriced, don't give you much of a selection, and are far too generic. Guess what? I don't like cauliflower, and I don't want to grow it! You do? Great! But maybe you don't care about melons – or maybe you're a melon fiend! This project allows you to create your own garden with what you want in it, which I will then seal into a custom-made capsule to be stored for however long you want!
Here's how it works:
Step 1: You choose 5 Urban Farm Packs (see chart below), each with 4-5 types of individual heirloom seed packs in them that you want in your future garden.
Step 2: I take your seed order, seal them into an oxygen-low environment (where the elements can't harm them), and encase them within a custom-built capsule to make that baby virtually indestructible! Each individual seed pack will include instructions on how to plant and save seeds of that particular variety.
Step 3: I send you your custom encapsulated garden, which you put away in a cool dark place until such a time that you deem fit to crack that baby open and start your very own heirloom garden!
Whether you want a salsa and salad garden, or you're a tomato and pepper lover, or you just have a hankerin' to grow anything and everything – you can make your garden as you see fit! All of the fruit & vegetable seeds I source from are heirloom - meaning they are NOT genetically modified or hybrid. They are renewable every year (i.e., you take the seeds from last year's tomatoes to grow new tomatoes this year). Modern hybrid seeds are usually bred specifically in a laboratory, and seeds produced from these crops do not produce viable seeds. I source from heirloom seed gardens to get the highest quality heirloom seeds possible for your Urban Farm garden!
WHY I NEED YOUR HELP
Now that I have sourced everything I need for making these custom gardens, I need your help to launch this product! It costs a lot of money to purchase everything I need, and a lot of time to create a clean, finished product. With your support, I hope to bring this product to the market and help do my part in spreading urban heirloom gardening all across the U.S.
URBAN FARM PACK CHART
These are all of the options of Urban Farm heirloom seed "packs" I have to choose from (each pack has between four-to-five different varieties of heirloom seeds in them):
Too many options for you? I've got you covered! You can nab my Urban Farm Complete Survival Capsule – it's a well-rounded garden that has a little bit of everything, and would come in quite handy in a time of economic crisis. It's also the most economic buy, coming in at $15 cheaper than the build-your-own option! You can see what's in it below:
Risks and challenges
There are challenges that every project faces, and mine is no exception. Something I struggled with at the beginning was finding reliable suppliers of heirloom seed. After much research, I have found some very reliable suppliers, and am confident to move forward with this project. One challenge I still face with this, however, is the fact that heirloom seeds of certain varieties can be hard to come by, or may only be available for short periods in the year. As such, I may be faced with having to substitute some varieties when fulfilling orders. Please note that if I do have to do this when fulfilling orders, I will do my best to substitute a variety with something as close as possible to the one chosen. Thank you for partnering with me!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Every seed variety will include instructions on the proper time of year to plant and harvest, as well as directions on how to harvest seeds from that variety to save for the following year.
How much knowledge of gardening, planting, and harvesting is required to know how to use my Urban Farm Capsule?
You will need to understand the basics of gardening in order to use your Urban Farm Capsule most efficiently. I include basic instructions, but do not cover the details (such as fertilization, soil pH levels, etc), so you may want to do additional research on how to care for your garden.
This depends on the variety of seed. For instance, corn or beans will be 25 seeds, but lettuce or carrots will be approximately 100 seeds - it depends on the variety (some will be weighed out instead of counted, such as carrot or lettuce seed, as they are too small to physically count).
Heirloom variety seeds are varieties of seeds that are traditionally grown throughout history without being affected by genetic modification or commercialized. An "heirloom" variety plant is a plant that is usually open-pollinated (unaffected by man) to grow as nature intended it to. Seeds from heirloom fruits and vegetables can be taken and propagated to produce the exact same variety of fruit or vegetable in the following generation.
GMO stands for "genetically modified organism". A GMO plant is a plant that has had its DNA spliced with that of an entirely different organism (i.e., taking a portion of canine (yes, dog) DNA and splicing it into corn DNA to produce a desired effect). It's an abomination, if you ask me, as it completely messes with the structure of that plant to produce something it was NEVER meant to do.
Hybrid seeds are varieties of seed that have been artificially cross-pollinated with other plant species, and usually result in a variety of plant that is more commercially useful (i.e., fruit can withstand shipping/handling, etc), but is also usually sterile.
This is a tough question for me right now. I've already had people emailing me about it, and I'm mulling through a lot of documentation to try and get to the bottom of this. At this point, if you pledge for a reward that is to be shipped internationally, just understand that if I am able to ship to you I will. If not, I will be forced to refund your money. Also please note that shipping charges internationally may effectively be changed as well. Every country is different, so I am trying to figure this out, and will update accordingly. Thank you for your understanding!
I'm worried about cross-pollination. Will you include instructions on preserving each variety of heirloom?
I will be including instructions on methods for preserving each and every particular heirloom variety! The whole point of this project is to create a way of sustainable gardening that will last for generations to come, so you want to be able to plant the same veggies every year!
The three top contributors to seeds going bad are: Oxygen, light, and temperature. All of the heirloom seeds I am using will be packaged in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers, to keep out light and oxygen, thereby taking care of the first two problems. In every Capsule I include instructions to store in a cool, dark place to take care of the temperature problem. A basement is great for this, or even a freezer or fridge. The capsule is made to take care of any outside force, so you can even bury it in the ground to make a literal "time capsule" if you want to! Taking all three of these things into account (temperature being most important on your part, since I cannot control that), the seeds should be viable for anywhere between 5-to-10 years without any problem!
