About this project

That video up there? Well that is essentially how I introduce audiences to my four protagonists of "The Broke Brothers' Revolution" at most of my booksignings. Yes. I do all of that to get people to read a book.

But it's because of those presentations that not only got people interested in buying the comedy/drama, but it also got made folks want to SEE the characters come to life through performance art. I've had actors use dialogue from the the book for acting class monologues and radio talk show hosts read from the material as if it was oral history. It all just made too much sense. The men of The Broke Brothers' Revolution just HAD to come to life on stage!

But before we get to all of that, here is what the book is about and, thus, provides the framework for the "Four Broke Guys" stage play: Four down and out men decide to launch a "protest movement" against patronizing women while dating. They'll fail comically. However, the experience makes them confront their own failings as men.

If that doesn't sound appetizing, let's look at the full description: Carlos Tyrone is pissed. More specifically, he’s pissed with his awful live-in girlfriend/baby-mama, Lola, who has become ungrateful, unloving and increasingly irritable. Seeking an outlet to vent this frustration, the newspaper columnist writes a piece that plants the seeds for Carlos’ makeshift protest movement against patronizing women: The Broke Brothers’ Revolution. Carlos soon recruits his friends Gent, Oscar and Daniel to The Broke Brothers’ Revolution and attempts to lure other men and draw attention to his cause with his newspaper column and through the use of the group’s website. And that's when the fun begins. The quartet takes aim at society’s women-centric conventions: ladies’ night club promotions; female-biased discounts at restaurants and bars; the gesture of buying women’s drinks and male-bashing in the media. Do they have a point that modern women’s expectation of male chivalry is out of whack, or is their frustration misguided? Better yet, are the men of The BBR broke—guys without money, or are they broken—men who need to be “fixed” after past decisions continue to dog them in the present? And if that is the case, can the souls and integrity of these four broken men be restored?

Here's the pitch. One actor playing all for wildly different characters. There will be a little singing. A lot of funny dialogue. Some quiet, chilling moments, music and even a touch of spoken word. It doesn't just have the makings of a good show. Those who've read the book know that it has the makings of a GREAT show.

I want to film the entire thing on two nights to afford us the best camerawork and stage presentation possible. And I want to take the show on the road to a few colleges that are interested in seeing the pilot shows, and theaters all across the country.

And I'm in talks to do it all at the historic Douglass Theater in my hometown of Macon, Ga, thus assuring that I will have a packed house each night for the intimate, yet state of the art 350-seat theater. I want this to happen. I need this to happen. The stories of Carlos, Oscar Gent and Daniel deserve to be told.

But I wouldn't have this campaign if I didn't need your help. Please help me, and we can chant the fellas mantra together:

 #BROKE POWER!

Risks and challenges

The great thing about this project is that it has few risks. In a small, but reasonable market such as Macon, Georgia, I can cover a lot of ground and turn in a lot of favors with friends in the media to make get the word out and build a buzz for at the very least one of the two shows. Also, it's my material. I will be the actor. And the one-man format actually applies to my range of oratorical skills. Essentially every drop of the material used is material I have written and produced, which means no copyright issues. The only drawback or concerns I would have is remembering the wealth of the material.

There is little competition for this brand of entertainment in Macon and I look to seize the moment and take advantage of that opportunity. But my friend, i can't make any of this happen without you. You have been so supportive of my efforts and I need you to be supportive once more. Please look over my gift packages and support this kickstarter project. I promise I will make you proud.

I've come so far on my own. But now I need your help. And I wouldn't seek it if I didn't absolutely need it.

Let's do this!
