The famous 1984 anti-Dungeons and Dragons comic, Dark Dungeons, is now coming to video! We'll show just how evil RPG's can be!
We reached all our stretch goals and are fully funded!
Thanks to your backings Dark Dungeons: The Movie! will now go from being an idea to being a reality.
For future updates on Dark Dungeons: The Movie! please check out the website (which will be up and running soon);
I won the lottery. Not the jackpot, "just" a thousand bucks, and being a typical middle-class middle-manager a thousand dollars is nice, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't going to change my life. So I decided to do something special with the money. I decided I wanted to spend it to bring something that would last; I would spend it to try and bring Jack Chick's epic 1984 graphic novel / tract to film.
I wrote Chick Publications explaining this to them and I'm super-excited to announce that I have obtained the video rights to make a movie based on Dark Dungeons.
If you're not familiar with Dark Dungeons you can read it in its entirety here;
But all you really need to know is that it sets out to show what Jack Chick knows to be the truth behind role-playing. It shows that;
*Playing RPGs can make you gain real life magic abilities
*If you gain a high enough level you will be invited to join a secret cult
* Gamers whose characters die are in danger of committing suicide.
* That DM's are vile temptresses that are out to corrupt their players to the forces of evil.
Given all those startling claims it's amazing that the crusade against RPG's has not been more successful! In fact, the last movie to crusade against D&D was Tom Hank's 1982 classic, "Mazes and Monsters."
We are going change all that. I'm already investing all of my lottery winnings in this project but it's just not enough to get it filmed and that's where you come in.
If the idea of seeing a movie where all the anti-RPG arguments above are made with every last drop of drama and conviction I can wring out them appeals to you, then I want you to invest today and make this movie a reality.
Please check out the video above to see what we are capable of and remember that you are only charged if we meet our funding goal. If the project does not receive it's complete funding you are charged ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
NEW REWARD: Backers of every level will receive their name on the movie credits if they wish. Size of that name depends upon level of backage.
UPDATE: I am thrilled to announce a partnership myself and Zombie Orpheus Entertainment (makers of The Gamers and Journey Quest)!!!
Our mission is to combine our powers to develop, produce, and distribute Dark Dungeons: The Movie!
Zombie Orpheus will be working through multiple versions of the script until we get the story that we know needs to be told and will be providing directing, filming, and acting talent as well!
Just think what ZOE can do with the Dark Dungeons story!
Please spread the word about this partnership, as I know that together with ZOE we can all make the movie that you want to see.
WE are funded! Dark Dungeons: The Movie! is now going to be made. I want to give a big thanks to all our backers out there who shared my dream to bring this to life.
But there is no resting on our laurels as it's time to announce some stretch goals:
Stretch Goal #1: $18,500 - the Necronomicon and Cthulhu mythos are all too real, according to Jack Chick's website, so if we reach our first stretch goal I will be glad to expose the Cthulhu threat in Dark Dungeons the Movie!
Stretch Goal #2: $21,000 - One of the most powerful ways to get across the powerful emotions that a serious drama like this raises is through song. I'd like to include a dream sequence where Debbie visualizes her internal struggle through verse:
(Debbie, in a sad, thoughtful singsong:)
"Is this God in my hand, or is it just a d4?
Oh can anyone tell me what I'm rolling for?
Are there traps and daggers, magic missiles galore?
No, this ain't God in my hand, it is just a d4."
(Ms Frost, cackling:)
"You have mastered the magic, you have mastered the spell,
You are ready to unleash the powers of hell!
You have God in your hand, and you have your d4."
Now I hope that you know what you're rolling for."
Stretch Goal # 3: $25,000 - Dark Dungeons the Movie! is a fictionalized account of the oh-so-very-real dangers of Role-playing but we would like to include a short documentary on the DVD about the fearless crusaders who have stood up to "Big Gaming" in the 1980s and find out why the crusade did not enjoy more success and where it stands today.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
I am the best person to make this project work because I am the only person who CAN make this project work. There is no guarantee that Jack Chick will allow anyone else to make a movie based on his work in the future either. He might, but he might not. But I have the right to make a movie about Dark Dungeons right now and I have the ability to make this happen. The time is now. The place is here. The power is mine.
The quality of the movie will probably be very similar to that of my introductory video; that's the best we can do with what we have. So please take a look at that to judge what type of movie we are capable of making.
The fact is, we are going at this with an ultra-low budget and that makes things incredibly harder. When the million and one things go wrong I won’t be able to throw money at the problem but will have to improvise as best I can. I also will be making the plot fit the budget, rather than the other way around. This includes simple things like not setting any scenes at night (lighting can be expensive and time consuming), no large crowd scenes (more people mean more complexity means more money), and showing puppet demons fleeing Debbie instead of using CGI demons.
But I feel that the epic story of a girl who wants to be Debbie instead of Elfstar deserves to see the light of video and will put all my time, energy, and love into making this film and will do everything it takes to get it done.
