Citizen George - Every Saga Has a Creator
Citizen George will be a funny time-travel comedy about geek history or a serious drama about power & control. YOU will choose which.
Citizen George - Every Saga Has a Creator
Citizen George will be a full length film about a director who creates a very popular Space Saga in the 1970’s only to make a very disappointing prequel trilogy 20 years later. But whether it will be a time travel comedy or a serious drama is up to you. That's because when I started working on this project and I had two great ideas of where I wanted it to go.
Citizen George as a Serious Drama
I had this idea I loved where Citizen George would be a straight drama in the vein of Citizen Kane. It would be about the rise and fall of a man who is a hero to many in geekdom and villain to others, just as William Randolph Hearst was to many in an earlier age of media.
Citizen George as a Time Travel Comedy
But at the same time, I also had an idea where Citizen George would be a sci-fi time travel comedy like Bill and Ted or Austin Powers. In that story, The Director would time travel twenty years into the future and 1970's-Director would make the prequels instead of 1990's-Director. Unlike future-Director, past-Director has not had decades of being surrounded by "yes-people" but he does have the added difficulty of missing out on twenty years of cultural change. That version would be a lot lighter and more of a wish fulfillment fantasy but at the same time it too would also be a great way to explore how power effects people.
I was trying to decide which of those two versions I most wanted to make when the idea hit me; why not let the backers decide? Kickstarter is all about letting the fans choose what they want to see. So why not take that to the next level? Why not let you decide if Citizen George is going to be a comedy or a drama? So that is exactly what I am going to do.
On your right are rewards for Team Comedy as well as rewards for Team Drama. Whichever team ends up with the highest total dollar amount at the end of the Kickstarter, that is the team whose version will get made. So, if at the end of this Kickstarter the total number of dollars from all Team Comedy rewards to the right is $75k and the total number of dollars from all Team Drama rewards to the right is $50k, then the entire $125k would be used to make Citizen George into the best darn comedy it could be. And if the numbers were reversed (if it was 75k from Team Drama backers and $50k from Team Comedy backers) then the entire $125k would be used to make Citizen George into the best darn drama it could be.
I want to make clear that regardless of which side wins, you will still receive the backing rewards from the level you pledge at. Victory for one side does not affect the rewards themselves; not in the slightest. The only thing it changes is what type of movie Citizen George ends up being made as; either as a comedy or as a drama. And It won't just cover the Space Saga. There will be very important scenes from other aspects of the Director's life, such as his popular game company named after him.
Like all Kickstarters you have the option of withdrawing your pledge any time before the end of the KS. I will be continuously posting regular updates on how much each side has raised so if you decide that you only have an interest in one version, and it looks like the other side will win, you can always withdraw your pledge. This Kickstarter will end at 11:59 PM (Pacific Time) on May the fourth. If you want to check back on that day, then May the fourth be with you in your thoughts so that you can remember it as the day when this Kickstarter ends.
But I promise you that no matter which version wins, you the fans will be getting a full length biographical film about a great Sci-Fi Director and his work that has touched us all. It will have professional production values, a great script, fantastic acting, and the best special effects our budget allows.
Please decide if you want Citizen George to be a comedy or a drama and select the appropriate reward to your right. And if you want to make sure your team wins, please be sure to tell all your friends about it on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, or any blogs and forums your read.
Thank you very much and I can’t wait to give you a great film!
PS. See the trailer for my last film,Dark Dungeons, here.
PSS. Legally speaking, Citizen Kane was not a film about William Randolph Hearst. And legally speaking, this film is not about anyone now living or dead. In fact, the "George" in Citizen George doesn't even refer to the main character. It's a Secondary Character Title, like Chasing Amy.
PSSS. Backers of all levels will receive a thank-you in the credits!
Risks and challenges
Comic Alliance called my last film their "most anticipated comic book movie of 2014" ( http://goo.gl/B9Zre8 ) which means it was technically more anticipated by them than Guardians of the Galaxy . . . .
But in all seriousness, if you look at the comments on my previous Kickstarter ( https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jrralls/rpgs-are-evil-dark-dungeons-the-movie )you will see that each one of my backers was satisfied with the movie I produced. I will not rest until you are able to say the same about this project as well.
In partnership with Zombie Orpheus, the making of my last film, _Dark Dungeons_, was one of the greatest experiences of my life and I worked very hard to make sure all my backers got their rewards.
No matter which version you choose to get made, my team has the skills and the dedication necessary to do so. Most importantly we have performed well in the past and have impressed everyone from my backers to Wired magazine ( http://www.wired.com/2014/05/dark-dungeons-movie/ ). You can purchase my last film, funded from KS, here www.darkdungeonsthemovie.com and see what we are capable of. And keep in mind that we did that film with a budget much lower than that of _Citizen George_.
Wilson Large, of Dark Darkness fame ( http://www.darkdarkness.com/ ), did a great job of producing this video with a minuscule budget and is planned to be the producer of _Citizen George_ as well.
Now, my last Kickstarter film was delivered nine months late. You deserve to know why. _Dark Dungeons_ was late because I ended up with twice the money and vastly more resources and allies than I thought I would. As such, the film grew in scope and as a result it naturally grew in the amount of time needed to make it. I had to choose between making a better movie and making a movie on time. And you should know that if the same choice is given to me with _Citizen George_, I will always choose to make a better movie. If that means delays to Citizen George then, while I don't like them, for me the most important thing is to make the best movie possible with the resources at hand. And that is what I will do.
But one thing I promise, I will insure that _Citizen George_ gets made no matter what. Making movies is the best job I have ever done in my life. It is the only job I have ever unconditionally loved. It is the only profession I have ever engaged in where I could not wait to wake up in the morning to face any difficulties with every last ounce of energy and intelligence I could bring to bear. I would do anything to keep making movies and I will ensure that you see every dime that _Citizen George_ raises up on screen in the best possible way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
