The Raspberry Pi Compute Module is a powerful platform for projects, but designing a schematic and footprint library can be a hassle.

This project was born out of the desire to include a compute module in a project, but I wasn't happy with the available PCB libraries. Most have something like this as their schematic symbol!

For this project I will design a multi-part schematic symbol, so that logically associated pins are grouped together:

In the above example, it is very fast to connect all the GND pins together and connect them to GND. This can be performed in less than 20 seconds. On the first schematic symbol, it would take most of an hour to hook up the GNDs and check them, and it would be very error prone.

In addition, the integrated library will include a footprint for the TE Connectivity 0.6mm Pitch 200 Way, Right Angle SMT DDR2 DIMM Socket ,1.8 V. This can be purchased from RS, part number 542-2685.

I expect to have the Altium Designer Integrated Library complete by the end of April, delivery is expected to follow in May. Delivery will be a zipped digital file. This will allow you to get up and going quickly with your Raspberry Pi Compute Module projects.

Risks and challenges

To mitigate any risks, I intend to create a simple project with the library and manufacture a PCB to test. This will help find any problems with the schematic or footprint before supplying the library to backers.
