My name is Jillian Rae, I am an independent songwriter & instrumentalist, and I just made a new record. (YAY!!) I am THRILLED to be bringing this new project straight to you, independently, with my first ever Kickstarter party! (Some people call these things campaigns, but I would like to think of it as an online party.) This album has been a very long time in the making AND has evolved into a totally new sound for me. Really, it's the dream record I've always wanted to make. So now here I am, sitting on what I think is a great collection of songs, and I am humbly asking for YOU to jump on the Kickstarter train, join the party, and please help me get this music into your hands, hearts, and ears.
TELL ME ABOUT THIS NEW ALBUM!
I Can't Be The One You Want Me To Be is a record about self-acceptance and self-discovery. It's about making peace with your real & vulnerable self, and proudly saying to the world: I’m "gonna be me.” (Thanks to N’SYNC for that little nugget of wisdom. Did I just age myself? What?)
I've been playing music and performing with my violin & my voice for almost my entire life. (For realz. My first "big gig" was when I was 9 years old. But that's a whole other story.) Like most things in life, my musical journey has been quite the rollercoaster ride. Lots of ups, lots of downs, lots of different directions, feelings of pure bliss, and sometimes feelings of pure confusion. What I finally figured out after all these years is this: (1) You don't have to let other people tell you what to play and how to play it. (2) Fiddle music is awesome and you love it, but you are allowed to make all the sounds, if you want to. (3) Create a kick ass piece of art that you connect with & feel awesome about, and figure out the rest later. So that’s what I did! And let me tell you, it feels really good.
If you are a fan of my Americana sound or the fiddling I do in other groups, don't fret! I will always be a person who loves & performs all of the musics. I will continue to perform tunes from my 'Heartbeat' & 'Wanderlust' records, as well as with my other musical projects. The new sound that comes with my new solo album is still inherently me. A girl's just gotta keep growing and evolving, ya know? I really think you are going to love this new place that I've grown into.
HERE'S A LITTLE TASTE OF WHAT'S TO COME! The first single off the new album: Medication
WHAT EXACTLY IS KICKSTARTER, AND WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE?
Kickstarter is a platform where independent artists and musicians (like myself) can work directly with fans & music lovers to fund their projects (such as, releasing a new album). It's really an amazing thing because it allows fans to be directly involved in the album-creation process AND comes with a whole slew of rewards!
What are you we doing here? WE'RE MAKING AND RELEASING A RECORD, BABY!
DID YOU SAY, "REWARDS?"
Oh yes, the rewards. This is one of the coolest parts of this whole Kickstarter party! ANYONE who kicks in at ANY level will receive SOMETHING from me... from a digital download of "I Can't Be The One You Want Me To Be" before it's official release date, to handwritten lyrics, to my first electric violin. I'm really into making these rewards awesome and fun for you! It's important to me that you leave this experience with good feelings AND good things.
SO, HOW DOES THIS WORK?
Kickstarter is all or nothing. We either raise the $12,000 by June 4th and rejoice together at the finish line, or sadly this project comes to a screeching halt. (Meaning, you get your money back & not a single penny goes toward the album!) And that would be sad. It's a "raise the funds or bust" kind of deal.
BUT I'm a dreamer and I really do believe that we can do this! Together! I think there is a magic to this Kickstarter Party and I am pretty excited to see what we can do with it. Sure, I'm nervous, scared, and feel like I might stress vomit every couple of hours... BUT I'M ALSO excited, thrilled, and giddy about making this thing happen with you!
WHAT DOES MY PLEDGE ACTUALLY DO?
As you may know, making a quality record is expensive. There's recording, mixing, mastering, paying the musicians, artwork, manufacturing, vinyl cutting... and that's just the creation of the physical album. With an album release also comes press and radio promotion, publicity, music videos, and management fees. It all adds up pretty quick! Especially when you're independent and don't have the initial funding from a label.
The way I am approaching this Kickstarter Party is like this: Your pledges are investments / pre-orders of the goods I will churn out after reaching my funding goal & finish paying for the things I mentioned earlier. You can think of it as a donation, an investment, AND a pre-order of the album. (That's a triple threat, right there!) If you kick in now, not only will you be a part of Team JRae (our own little indie label, if you will), but you will be able take this music home with you and say, "I helped release this!" And THAT is pretty, dang, cool.
One more time: YOUR PLEDGE GOES DIRECTLY TOWARD THE MAKING OF MY ALBUM & IT'S FALL RELEASE. *BOOM*
THANK YOU, A MILLION TIMES!
I couldn't have made this album in the first place, nor would I even be launching this Kickstarter Party if it weren't for YOU. Your love, and support, and coming out to my shows, and all the hugs, and high fives throughout the years are THE reason why I am able to create & perform music... and live! I can't even tell you in words how fortunate I feel to find myself inside such a loving & supportive community. It really is an honor.
Thank you, from the squishy parts of my heart, for taking your valuable time to check out my Kickstart Party! For listening, for following, for sharing, for caring, for your unwavering support, my gratitude is endless.
All the loves,

Risks and challenges
It sure does take a lot of dedication, sacrifice, & risk to be a full time musician. Releasing an album is part of that risky business, indeed. Thankfully, this isn't my first rodeo! I've been involved in quite a few album projects- both as a hired studio musician & as the leader of the entire operation. For THIS project, I've got all of the recording and artistic things FINISHED. The work is mostly done on my end! (Huzzah!) The biggest risk is not getting fully funded...BUT we're gonna fill this Kickstart Party Train and roll it full speed into the station. Right?! *TOOT TOOT*Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
