Established earlier this year, JP WATCH DESIGN is a Sydney based company with the purpose to help preserve the world we live in. Sharing the desire to create a sustainable future, along with a love for fashionable timepieces, the three founders have combined their passions by launching a business with an aim to give back.
The goal of our Kickstarter campaign is to get our company off the ground so that once the campaign finishes we can fully commit to our business model - to donate 15% of the proceeds from each watch sale across our three partner charities. We would love to be able to start our project in its intended form from day one, however, Kickstarter rules specifically prohibit donating funds raised through a campaign. Instead we hope that you will assist us in establishing a unique and worthy business operation that can set the standard for businesses contributing to a wider social good.
This brings us to our product - we are proud to introduce our flagship model, 'The Bearing’. Available in four colour variations, this simple yet sophisticated watch is perfect for everyday wear.
The name ‘The Bearing’ is born from the nautical reference of movement relative to another location. For us, the interpretation of the bearing is to be constantly moving in a forward direction – a concept at the core of our business ethos.
We have ambitious hopes to grow a business that maintains a strong social conscience, and we dream of the day that a greater level of responsibility is taken by the corporate world to contribute back to our wider community. ‘The Bearing’ represents the moment in which our business and social ambitions align in a common trajectory – moving us on the course to our goal.
We started this company with an idea that we could give back while creating a classic timepiece. Upon the completion of our Kickstarter campaign, we will donate 15% of all future proceeds across three charities that work tirelessly towards:
The company’s signature icons - a tree, a whale and a water drop - will be engraved on the back of the timepiece to remind owners they contributed towards a brighter future when they purchased their watch.
Water Collective is an international nonprofit that secures life-lasting clean water for rural communities in Africa and India. The organisation was founded in 2011 to resolve the shortcomings of clean water access in the developing world, where 40% of water points are not working at any given time.
World Land Trust is an international conservation charity, which protects the world's most biologically important and threatened habitats acre by acre. Since its foundation in 1989, WLT has funded partner organizations around the world to create reserves, and give permanent protection to habitats and wildlife.
JP Watch Design will also be providing a percentage of proceeds to Oceana. Oceana was established in 2001 by a group of leading foundations. In 1999, these foundations commissioned a study and discovered that less that 0.5 percent of all resources spent by environmental nonprofit groups in the United States went to ocean advocacy. No organisation was working exclusively to protect and restore the oceans on a global scale. Oceana was founded to fill the gap, and is an international organisation focused solely on oceans. Though JP Watch Design does not have a formal agreement in place with Oceana, we will be donating a percentage to their organisation to assist with their meritorious work.
Our kangaroo leather strap accompanies each model of ‘The Bearing’.
These ethically sourced straps are a by-product of strict government population control programs. The tanning technique employed uses a sustainable and natural vegetable tan that has been utilised for thousands of years. The clasp is stainless steel, and is available in silver or gold.
We worked with local Sydney leather company Charlie Middleton to design our watchbands. Charlie Middleton's chief craftsmen has numerous years of experience as a designer of leather goods and currently operates in Bondi, Australia.
At 44mm by 10mm, our watch size is on the larger end of the timepiece spectrum.
Mineral Glass Crystal:
Used by brands such as Seiko and Citizen, our 39MM mineral glass window offers a clear and strong cover to our watch dial while maintaining a low level of reflection.
Japanese Miyota Movement:
Developed by the Japanese Miyota Company, the quartz crystal movement in ‘The Bearing’ drives its date and time.
316L Stainless Steel Case:
Our high grade polished stainless steel case and case back provides a strong, protective housing for the watch movement.
5ATM Water Resistance:
Water resistant to 50 metres.
The custom designed crown features a raised “JP” signature.
Width of Bezel: 2.5mm
Diameter of Crown Face: 6.5mm
Diameter of Crown Base: 4mm
Diameter of Calendar Dial: 9mm
As you can see, this project is almost a year in the making. We have a passion for watches and social movements. However, we can't go at it alone. This is where you come in. We need your help! We want to keep growing and expanding to have a positive impact on sustainability worldwide, for decades to come.
In five years time, we’re hoping to see our timepieces on many wrists around the globe. By then, we’re hoping to have expanded ‘The Bearing’ collection to include other colour variations, while also launching a women’s range with a more petite, feminine look.
Additionally, we have several different watch designs waiting in our workshop that we would like to see come to fruition. These concepts are still in their initial phases, however all will still boast a timeless style and remain in line with our business ethos of sustainability.
We want to see the 15% of proceeds given to charity increase even more, and we’d like to continue to partner up with more charities along the way.
Last but not least, we’re hopeful that the successful implementation of charitable donations as the core of our business model will inspire other corporations to do the same.
Risks and challenges
We have worked hard to get our company to this point - the only thing left to do now is launch and hope for your support!
We realise that there are always risks in undertaking a project of this nature, but we are that confident that we'll reach our goal and so determined to make this project come into fruition, that we have already made a down payment on the first order with our primary supplier.
There have been plenty of hurdles that we've overcome while creating 'The Bearing' and we are both proud of our end product and certain that we have delivered a quality watch.
We have set a realistic time frame for order fulfillment, being March 2016. This will give us sufficient time for;
- Production of mass order
- Comprehensive quality control of mass order
- Finalising designs for watch packaging
- Shipment and delivery to our Kickstarter backers
We will be sure to keep our backers continuously updated on our progress.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
