About this project
What is Knife Fork & Spoon?
VISIT WWW.FIGMENTA.CO.UK FOR DETAILS
Knife Fork and Spoon is a colourful, personal and light weight alternative to conventional cutlery. The set consists of a comfortable ergonomic fork and the combination of a practical knife and well-shaped spoon which clips inside for storage. At a target weight of only 25 grams this set is ideal for eating on the go.
Use combinations of Knife and Fork, Fork and Spoon or either part independently to cut, slice, spread, scoop or prong to your heart's content.
The development of our cutlery set is now as far as we can take it without funding. We've sketched, mocked up and tested to refine the design to the cast resin prototypes you see in the pictures. We're now ready to take the next step and start manufacturing the product by injection moulding in the correct materials. This is very exciting but also very expensive, and why we need your help!
Your backing will go towards the tooling costs, test production batches and food contact testing.
In return you will be the first people ever to receive the sets, which won't go on general sale until the summer of 2014. You will also forever have your name on our website by way of appreciation. Backers have the option of getting your hands on some exclusive colour schemes which will only ever be available to Kickstarter and produced in limited numbers, so be quick, once they are gone, they are gone forever....
“This is a project for all those creatives who want to work on their own designs! Sometimes we wish we had the freedom to develop, and 'play' with our own ideas like when we were at college. This project is the result of hours spent on the weekend doing just that, playing!”
The approach taken on this design isn't the tried and tested 'form follows function'. Instead this was a juxtaposition of unassociated forms. Believe it or not this design started out as a hat based on a squid!
We believe that without vivid alternative influences, a products ergonomic refinement will inevitably lead it to looking identical to everything that has gone before, and we have made every effort to try and strike a balance between function and creativity.
Thank you for your time.
Risks and challenges
John-Paul Grogan is a product / packaging designer with more than 8 years industry experience designing and overseeing the manufacture of plastic products both in Europe and the Far East. This is the first time he has launched his own product and knowing his reputation is on the line, he is dedicated to making it a resounding success. He is backed up by a strong network of engineers and has a fantastic relationship with the chosen injection moulders for this project who have had an advisory role in the design of the parts.
While the parts are detailed and complex shapes, the injection mould tooling is relatively simple. The parts have been designed in line with good practice injection moulding principles. Materials have been selected to facilitate easy production conditions and full compliance with relevant food safety authorities. Should we require any last minute tweaks and alterations to the parts, we have selected local toolmakers and moulders here In the UK so that any revisions may take place quickly and efficiently.
We have conducted trials with focus groups using the Polyurethane prototypes and are confident in our design. However as soon as the tooling is available we have various plastics to test to make sure we have the properties needed to make this a robust and safe product.
We will make every effort to conclude testing as soon as we can to get the part out to all backers promptly.
SUPPLY CHAIN AND LOGISTICS
We have designed the packaging so that all parts shall come assembled and packaged straight from our production line here in the UK once tooling and testing is complete. Hopefully this just leaves us to print a postage label and get your Knife Fork & Spoon to you as fast as possible. All production, packing and postage costs have been budgeted for, as have all costs in this tightly managed project. This is backed up by a team of friends and family who are keen to make this project happen and are on standby to package / label should the need arise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
