We’re making a revolutionary, romantic video game where you play as a woman of fashion in pre-revolutionary France, a time of intrigue, danger, and serial adultery. There, you will use social skills, seduction, and guile to advance your position, all while preparing for the danger of the coming political upheaval.
Ambition: A Minuet in Power is in development for PC and Mac in English. It will be delivered in standard and DRM-free versions on Steam, GoG and our website. Other platforms and languages may be announced later. Ambition: A Minuet in Power is expected to launch in 2018, however, any stretch goals we reach may alter that launch window. More features means more time spent in production.
Many romantically focused games are like choose-your-own-adventure books with preset decisions and outcomes. Once you’ve beaten them, there’s rarely a reason to go back and play again.
Romance in Ambition isn’t just story writing, it’s a mechanic. By engaging in liaisons with various nobles, the player gains limited access to the resources of the person they’ve seduced. The more devoted their partner is to them, the more power the player has over that noble. This lets the player influence the outcome of political events. A particularly creative (and ruthless) player can even maintain multiple secret liaisons simultaneously. Getting caught doing this, however, can have very dangerous consequences.
How does one gain the devotion of a seduced noble? Wear their gifts out in public, attend their events, spurn their enemies, and more.
Additionally, Ambition randomly generates the world you play in, every time. This means that every playthrough is a little different. Nobles you meet in one playthrough might not show up in another. The revolution may be a success, or a disaster. It’ll be up to you, as the player, to figure out who to befriend and who to snub, in order to ensure the best position for yourself.
The pre-revolutionary period was a time of great splendor and great squalor, of elegance and terror. The combination of danger and romance in this period has always been exciting and fascinating. It was also a time where women, like your character, wielded massive amounts of power, but often in secret. Behind closed doors, women like Madame du Barry and the Duchess of Polignac, pushed their agenda through others, changing the course of history.
These are just a few of the characters we have planned for the game. The full game will include oh, so many more...
True to the decadence of the period, splendid parties were thrown regularly, serving both as a celebration and a political tool. In Ambition, these parties will be your battlefield, the place where you raise yourself up and drive your enemies to ruin.
When going to parties, you’ll have to choose how you dress for the occasion. Each faction likes different things and players must take that into account. The Church may frown upon your more provocative ensembles, but the Bourgeoisie might celebrate them. These results help determine how confident your character is at the start of the party.
In conversations, players will work the room, using their remarks in order to please and placate various guests. Certain guests like certain kinds of remarks, so saying the right thing will increase their opinion of you, saying the wrong thing will upset them and lower your confidence. Charming guests lets you get access to rewards like increased reputation, information and gossip.
Sell gossip on the sly to unscrupulous newspapers. Use the money to hire spies in order to make it easier to seduce a certain noble. Seduce that noble, then convince them to use their influence to crush your social rivals.
Is it wrong? Yes.
Is it fun? Extremely.
Our team is composed of passionate people with over 32 combined years of professional, games industry experience:
Because we’re an independent game studio that wants to make amazing games.
We know that making a game like this, the right way, will require a substantial investment. In fact, we’ve already spent months of our own time and tens of thousands of dollars to make the working prototype of the game that you’ve seen in the trailer. This is not just a concept. We've already started production. We’re confident that we’ve scoped the project appropriately, but we also know that we’ll need additional funding to finish it, especially at the level of quality we really want. That’s where you come in!
Try as we might, we can’t find any games exactly like what we’re making. Which means, as awesome as we think our game is, conventional publishers and sources of funding aren’t open to us. We, however, strongly believe that Ambition is a game people will like and a game people want to be made. Not only will this campaign help fund the game, it will also confirm to the gaming world that there’s a market for our kind of revolutionary, romantic gameplay.
Our soundtrack will be created by the award winning composer, John Robert Matz. We chose him for this project, not just for his considerable compositional talents, but also for his commitment to period appropriate music. We think that music will serve as a critical element in establishing a ‘sense of place’ for the players as they step into the (suitably fancy) shoes of our protagonist.
Here’s a sample of what he’s working on for us:
As we gain funding, we can allow the scope of Ambition: A Minuet in Power to expand. These funding goals are separated into stages. We'll reveal more stages, and more goals, as the campaign progresses.
We wanted to make sure there was something for everyone in this campaign, so we have a wide selection of rewards available to our backers. Check them out below!
At the request of our backers, we’ve included add ons in the campaign, which allow backers to add extras to their rewards.
Unfortunately, Kickstarter doesn’t natively support add ons, which means the process can feel a little non-intuitive. However, with this guide, you should have no problem getting the all the additional rewards you desire!
Step 1: Click the ‘Back This Project’ or ‘Manage This Pledge’ Button
Depending on whether you’ve already backed the project or not, the button will read either ‘Back This Project’ or ‘Manage This Pledge’. Either way, you’ll find it at the top of the campaign page, on the right side, near the trailer. Click on that button.
Step 2: Select Your Reward Level
Scroll down until you find the reward level you like the most, or the one you’ve already selected. Click on it that reward level, this will change the menu.
Step 3: Edit Your Pledge Amount
Edit the Pledge Amount to reflect cost of your base reward, plus the shipping, and plus the additional items wanted. Double check the add on menu to make sure these amounts are correct. Once you’ve got the right amount, click the ‘Continue’ button.
Remember: some add on rewards are only available at certain backer tiers. If you have any questions, please feel free to send us a message and we’ll clarify any questions you have.
Step 4: Confirm The Changes
Scroll down, click the ‘Pledge’ button, and you’re done!
Later, as we get close to completing Ambition, we will send every backer a survey. In that survey, you will tell us which specific items you want to add onto your reward. You will also give us your shipping details at that time.
Risks and challenges
We know that every Kickstarter project carries elements of risk. In fact, some of you may have been burned by other crowdfunding projects before. For those who have, we’re really sorry you had to go through that.
The Joy Manufacturing Company is composed of industry veterans with over 32 combined years of professional experience making games. We know how to make games the right way, and we have no intention of letting you down.
However, making games is difficult, even under the best of circumstances. As a result, the standard game development caveats apply. Some features may take longer to make than we thought. Some planned features, which sound amazing on paper, might not be very fun in implementation. If that’s the case, we’ll need to rework those features until they’re fun, but they may end up looking and feeling very different from when they started.
It’s tough, but that experimentation and discovery is just part of the joy of making games.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
