About

So…about me.

My name is Joshua Dillard, and I go by "Joshua James" as a solo singer songwriter-

I blame my dad for getting me hooked on guitar, (thats a good thing by the way) I started noodling around whenever I had the chance to.  He taught me what he new, and I learned my first song, "Smoke on the water"!! (Deep Purple) I. Was. HOOKED!!

With that sincere interest, they sprung for some lessons.  I always showed an interest in songwriting, even as a wee lad I "wrote songs" on my toy guitars!!  I saw a songwriters contest in now of the music mags I was reading, and I was already pen to paper.

I told my guitar teacher at the time what I was wanting to do, and he supported me 100%.  He even offered to help me record my first demo of the song, so that I could send it in!! (On a cassette, remember them?? lol)

So, the next night that I had lessons, I walked in and he had the practice room all set up like a studio. We tracked the song, It was the coolest thing in the world to me.  It was only a 4 track tape recorder, but it was an amazing experience to me.  That was the beginning of my love for the studio!!

Moving a little forward…

So, moving forward, oh that song writing competition I entered at the age of 16, I didn't win. lol I only scored 55 out of 100, but it was a wonderful experience for sure. It wasn't "pop-y" enough!! lol

But as time went on, I found myself playing in some youth group type bands, and worship teams.  I also had a crazy desire to start up my own band…welp, I did.  The first few never got out of the bedroom/jam room. Big dreams, but no commitment.  But then one day, I voiced to a buddy who played guitar that I'm wanting to start a band, and asked if he'd like to be in it.  So he and I started looking, gots us a drummer, and I was invited to watch another youth group band who had a really talented electric guitar player.  We gathered up our people, set a meeting at Ol' Denny's and had us a chat!!

What we didn't have as of yet, was a bass player, the day we met up, the guitarist brought one of his friends, who…. yup ya guessed it, played the bass!! BAM! This was great, there were a total of 6 in this band.  2 acoustic players, who also sang.  Keys, drums, bass and electric.  Well, it wasn't even the first "practice" that the keys player decided to back out.  Shortly there after, due to "personality conflicts" we lost an acoustic player.  So, 6 was was down to 4.  I had always had plans to play the acoustic full time, but, ha… that changed!!  To make a long(ish) story shorter, before we new it, we were de-tuned 7 string playing the local heavy rock scene by the name (at that time) "Meaningful Existence".  Fast forwarding a little more, we cut a demo, and starting playing and being invited to play, shows and festivals.  Shortly after that, the newly acquired drummer had himself a little studio-oh-yeah!!  So, we set out to record our very first E.P. (never happened) :-(  I got married, had to move away due to the wife being in the air force.  And the guys?? Disbanded sadly, and most went their separate ways.  (Drummer and I are still great friends to this day!!)

 Quickly, quickly…

Ok, so, after all that, Im in Delaware, no band, a tascam 4 track, and the beginning of my very own studio.  Days weeks years have past, got into computer recording, DAW-interface, the whole nine yards and tracked my first artist.  Still record bands and artists alike, set up shop in numerous states; Delaware, Georgia and Florida.  Ive always wrote and recorded my own music, but I would always set it aside to pursue other paying studio gigs.

I've continued to play in a worship team at my church, and always try and work with other artists.  I have found myself battling with the whole "artist thing" a lot.  I wasn't sure if I wanted to, or could or even should.  I've been so frustrated with music, that I have called it quits to many times. (who hasn't, right?)  But I have always found it "calling" me back. I think I was running away from being an artist.  I was happy and content "hiding" in my little home studio.  Well, that changed. I even wrote and recorded a single with singer Claire Pemberton on vocals, that I recorded, mixed "mastered" and released on iTunes and all that other fun digital stuff, also am BMI affiliated. {sigh}

Finally, to the point…lol

I feel that I was being disobedient, and running away out of fear. Not trusting God to lead and provide for me.  I now feel, well Ive always felt the tugging of the Holy Spirit,  that I'm being called to be used in the art of music, to help minister in song.  I will be taking one step at a time, take things slowly, baby steps here!! :-) Cause if this is God, then what do I have to fear?  I will be recording songs about life. True love, and worship.  I have songs written, and even pre-recorded, and I'm also currently writing.

I will be working with Jeremy Casella. www.jeremycasella.com Traveling up to Ol' Nashville to track, mix and master the E.P.

 Your part in this adventure…

This is how you could help me with this adventure. Honestly, I could probably make this E.P. on my own, but it would take MUCH longer and I know that because I have tried so many times.  So, here’s how it works: You give an amount, and based on the level at which you choose to back the project, I get to give you something in return, as a HUGE thank you.

My goal is $2,500. That money will go toward recording, mixing, mastering, pressing, and other fun and exciting fees.  Here’s the thing: if we DON’T make the goal of $2,500 by the deadline - which will be a 30 day count down - NONE OF THE MONEY CHANGES HANDS. That means I don’t receive your financial support and you don’t get the all the great ( I thinks its great) stuff. (insert sad face----> here)

But, I think we can do it!!  Will you help me? Will you please share this with me? If so, could you  please share this video with anyone and in any way you can! You have NO IDEA how much impact a single Facebook post, like, tweet, or retweet can have on a project like this. Even if you can’t back me financially, spreading the word is just as amazing and very helpful.

THANK YOU, so much for your time you took to read this and even looked at this page. Thank you for you help!!  And letting me tell you a part of my story.

Risks and challenges

I've never made a record before! Not like this. I have experience in the home/project studio and with the recording process, but I've never taken on something like this before. I'm excited and "nervous" at the same time! LOL

What I plan to accomplish by you backing the project:

1. Pay for the tracks to be recorded, mixed, and mastered by a mastering engineer.

2. Pay the producer Jeremy Casella and session musicians.

3. Cover the costs of manufacturing and distributing the CD to YOU, the incredibly genorious backer!

4. Pay for the record to be serviced to online digital distributors (iTunes, Amazon MP3, Spotify, etc.)

Thank YOU!!
